For me, it's three-fold, especially if I get my in-laws to pay for the brisket.
(1) delicious cheap food and I'm the hero
(2) sanctioned drinking for 12-20 hours
(3) I don't have to interact with my family ("Sorry honey, you know I'd love to go to the dinosaur museum with you and the kids but I gotta stay here and tend this beast")
This man knows that of which he speaks. All three of those reasons are damn spot-on. I have gotten out of a lot of "honey-do shit" by claiming exactly what JimmyJazz posted in #3.
OP, get your FIL to pay for the brisket (Costco usually has primes for $3.50/pound here recently). Get some course black pepper, kosher salt (Diamond is best), lump charcoal, and oak and hickory logs. If your FIL doesn't have one, you'll need a charcoal chimney as well (availabe at any hardware store for $15). Oh, and a bottle of bourbon.
Then watch these:
What you make, even on the first go-round, will be better than what these Yankees have ever eaten. Then bask in the adulation and props. You're wife will be so impressed, you'll get a blowjob upon arriving back home.

Netflix:
Secrets of the Tower of London
Secrets of Westminster
Secrets of Great British Castles
Edward VIII, The Nazi King (I found this right after I watched Season Two of The Crown; very well done.)
The Royal House of Windsor (if you like The Crown, you'll really enjoy this).
Edit: I'll second what lateshow said about Armistice and The Long Shadow. Both are very well done. Watch Armistice first, though.
Amazon Prime:
Wolf Hall (not a documentary, but it might as well be. A BBC/Masterpiece six-episode series set in Tudor England. It's told from Cromwell's point of view and gives him more sympathetic treatment. Mark Rylance is utterly brilliant as Cromwell, and Claire Foy (as usual) is outstanding as Anne Bolyen. I cannot recommend this highly enough.)
Inside the Tower of London
Henry VII: The Winter King
The First World War. Ten episodes, but very deep and insightful.
The Battle of Chosin. You must watch this. What those guys endured...
Carrier. Ten episode PBS doc following life on the USS Nimitz

Would a British side look much different than the English side? If so, how would you feel about going that direction if it elevated the chances of winning? Olympic team is UK/GB I guess.
Agree on Bale, and I'm pretty sure this guy would have been a massive upgrade on whomever England started at Left Midfielder from 1994-2006...

Basically slightly over half of OSU's student body are from either the OKC or Tulsa metro areas; also in the past 15-20 years they have recruited the crap out of the Dallas and Houston suburbs... They basically go down there looking for kids who are good students but not good enough to get into UT or A&M and offer them in-state tuition to come to OSU. (OU does the same thing)
Lady I work with’s son is going to oSu and is in the exact scenario you provided. He attends a Catholic high school in Dallas, is top 20% of his class with good SAT & ACT, extracurriculars, all that stuff. Yet he has no shot at his dream school (UT) or even UT-D. Okie St offered him in-state tuition, which will be cheaper than Tech.
Good deal for the kids and schools.

I agree, but even with that being said, you can’t expect to win if you have ONE shot on goal in 122 minutes
Yep. England had their chances in the first half. Didn’t take them and got burned.
Damn impressed with Croatia. Fought back and dominated after half time.
Hopefully we’re in store for a great final.

Hey Look! It's Vardy!
Only 20 mins too late

Maybe Vardy now?

Might have been nice to have Vardy running right at the Croats right there. But then he'd need service.
-
So the entire ball crossing the line isn't a throw in to the other side now?
-
Wow... This some good shit.
-
Did I just see a Croat see yellow? Didn't think that was possible.

this is croatia's third ET game in a row, yeah? think that might play a part?
they were playing inspired there at the end, and didn't look tired
You would think, but England looked the side with lead legs the final 30 minutes. It'll be interesting to see how each team comes out of the break.
-
Croatia winner is coming.
-
How is Lovren still on the pitch? That's four clear yellows.

Sent this by an England fan. I laughed.

Great series, great writing, great characters. But no mention yet of Joan Holloway? Am I the only one who occasionally wishes this series had aired on HBO? Because, well, a "True Detective Season 1 Episode Two-esque Scene" with Joan Holloway, well, I've been to my bunk often at the thought...

I think it was a river in Toledo or Akron that caught fire. I had a professor in the School of Business who witnessed that as a youth.
It was the Cuyahoga River, which runs through downtown Cleveland.

“Perhaps it's time you tried a new profession.”
“Huh?
“What I mean is, you don't seem to be a very good thief; maybe you should try something else.”
“Yeah, well, what the hell you know about it, Capone? What are you in for?
“Me? My lawyer fucked me. Everybody's innocent in here. Don't you know that?”

Is there anything nice about the entire state of Ohio?
Pro Football HOF is very cool. Summer highs are in the mid-70s. Beyond that...not really.

Other than Florida State (or NC State), it could be argued that Iowa State is the best "state" football team in all of division 1...
I'll second what South Austin said. I'm no fan of the Bucknuts, but, well, just have a look.

All-time Favorite. The Iceman made everything look effortless, even feats of insane skill.
Least favorite: Hannibal Lecter

Does not look DAF.
