Lol people in here acting like he's Johnny Unitas. Brady will be plenty entertaining.

I think so too. You have to believe he is sitting on some great stories.

  2. Let’s see. Shit ton of Super Bowls, super model wife, money is never going to be a concern for generations…..Why would you doubt his success at anything he takes seriously?

Besides, if he wasn’t doing the TV gig. I’m sure there are many organizations that would gladly pay top fucking dollar just to hear him speak.

I think of him almost every time I think of acoustic guitar. Nearly synonymous. Those are cool fret markers I must say.

A decade or so i worked with a woman who had a son, around 13, who fronted a band with other kids that age. Mostly covers, but they played big venues all over SoCal even opening for some pretty big names. They had a huge rehearsal space with a stage and everything. The whole thing was financed by Dave Mustaine. That was the part she really wasn't supposed to tell people. Not sure if his kid was part of it or if he just invested in young acts. I looked up the band a few years ago and they hadn't played since like 2013. Birds of Prey was the band name.

You think of Mustaine when you think of an acoustic guitar player? Mustaine…..really?

I wouldn't hate on that, tbone, but there are a lot of other looks Id go to before that one. The beauty of a Telecaster is its simplicity. The more you add, the more you take away.

Hard to beat this, though some would say there already too many screws in the pickguard.

    You really can’t improve that.

So I get where you're coming from for sure.  But lets say the P-90 equipped LPs - sure the 52-54s had issues (trapeze tailpiece, wrap around bridge for example), but the 56s with the P-90s are pretty danged cool and have a unique sound.  Sure, they aren't 57-60s with the PAFs, but they have a taste that some people appreciate along with the vintage mystique and my guess is some true scarcity.  I know it's been roughly estimated that there are only 12-1400 57-60 bursts.  So how many 56 LPs with the P-90s and the tune o matic set up?

Where I really agree with you is on the bottom end guitars.  For example, my Dad learned on an Alamo amp that's currently listed for $800 on Reverb now.  It was a piece of shit then, and it's a piece of shit now.  I actually have a Silvertone/Danelectro 1448 with the amp in case (that promptly shorted out when I plugged it in).  I bought it for $100 as a curiosity twenty years ago.  But honestly, it's a piece of junk.  A funny, interesting piece of junk, but you couldn't play the thing out without a lot of money dumped into it.  I've played Harmony guitars from back in the day.  Again, they suck.  But the Jimmy Reed model will set you back at least $1500.  Think about how much guitar $1500 can buy you from Fender or Gibson, or one of their decent lower price point brands.  That's where I see the real craziness.

Oh, I don’t disagree with you about the early LP’s. But, If you asked me what are they worth to me? Nothing north of $5k. At best it is in the $3500 to $5000 range. And that’s with provenance. There are simply far to many in the market to demand such high numbers.

The only exception would be a real find that was in mint shape, included the original sales receipt, and all case candy that was original. Sure, such an example would bring far more.

Probably helped it was right at 9 lbs. The new ones on Sweetwater are heavy as fuck with tops that are nowhere close to special.

I have never owned one under 10 lbs. but, I’m one of those tin foil hat guys who think that the weight has something to do with the sound.

Could I tell the difference in a blind test? Probably fucking not.

Lack of production currently and inflation is making everything valuable. I sold my LP for what I paid for it.

It was less than 3 years old.

Never mind, I just remembered your post..

Most of that stuff is bought by shops who will resell it. Tomorrow, Austin Vintage Guitars will post photos of the truckload of gear they bought at the show this weekend. If you could afford to by in bulk like they do, I'd bet those prices are much lower on a lot of that shit.

That is possible I guess. Though you can find that same crazy ass pricing on a number of online sites, including Norman’s and Carter’s.

Eh probably true, but also stuff from that era are expensive as museum pieces at this point. Once you get to the 70s, that begins to be less the case. Certainly nobody is paying a premium on 25-35 year old guitars that aren’t specifically something cool. Unless I’m wrong.

    I believe they are.

This is a good example. Look at the values of either a Norlin (70-85) built LP, or a CBS built Fender (66-86). No one I deal with wants either. why? They are not the same quality as those that came before or after. No longer made by artisans, but by machines.
You should be able to grab one from those years for $900 tops. Yet, look for a 69 LP on Reverb and look what they are asking. Like I said, it’s only redeeming quality is…….it’s old.

That’s really good shit mr fuck.

I hate the fucking prices of this shit, and pretty much everything, these days though.

What I hate most is the failure of people to recognize that just because it’s old, don’t mean it’s good.

Guitars are unlike any other thing I collect. If one buys a high end Leica film camera like a single stroke M3, you still pay top dollar. But a Topcon from the same year…$35.00.

Same with watches. A 1969 Daytona Rolex is going to be expensive. A Timex from the same year, fuck who knows, $5.00?

Guitars, the entire landscape changes. If it is from yesteryear, you pay premium, even if it is shit. This phenomenon is particularly true when fucking around with early LP’s. Yeah, they’re old. But most have problems, and don’t sound particularly great. Remember, those prior to 57 didn’t have the Seth Lover PAF pickups. Yet, a asking price of $45,000 is not uncommon……fuck that. It’s just old..

Always interested in the guitar/amp in case combo.

Seems like a decent price for a very nice Micawbr replica - without saying it’s a Micawbr replica.

I was drawn to the color on this one:

This one was so weird I just has to document it.

Forgive the weird upside down post. But I really dig this triple pickup custom.

And that’s a wrap for this years guitar show.

Thank you for that. It was fun looking at all of them..

This is brilliant and would bring it all full circle!

Exhibit A. This is several years prior to the fist Fender guitar.

That is some real imagination at the bottom four frets.

I'm not sure how one goes thru film school, and doesn't know who actors are from past, and present. If you're interested in a particular field of study I'd think you'd immerse yourself in all aspects of it, not just the technical aspects, or from one side of the camera.

To say you go to film school, and don't know who actors are, as you look at films, and study directors, and how a film was shot, and why, and WHO was in it seems odd. History by it's definition is a study of the past, and how does one study film without discussing the very objects of the camera lens.

For that matter I didn't go to film school, or watch silent films, but I know who the stars of that era were, and they were all dead and buried before I was even born. Any successful or intelligent student of the history of film is going to know who most if not who all actors, and directors were, and why they were important in their era (Flynn is about as iconic an actor as there's ever been).

If you are studying how Spielberg or Hitchcock’s films were made, you will at some point mention Hanks or Cary Grant. You may not study them, or know what they accomplished, but you know the names.

Famous directors or producers are linked at the hip by the famous actors that stared in their finest films.

So, to the original point. If you’re old enough to attend a college level course on film study, you should at least be aware of Flynn.

Again, actor not filmmaker. No one is teaching anything about Randolph Scott in film school. Or anything about the cheesy Western movies he starred in. Hell, I never knew his name outside of the Statler Brothers song until the last decade or so. And I only knew that from commercials I saw on tv.

Like I would ever own a recording by the Statler Brothers.

Bullshit. Flynn made multiple movies with Michael Curtiz. Both Robin Hood and Charge of the light brigade would have been covered in any filmmaking curriculum. Therefore one should at the very least know Flynn’s name.

So true.  It probably kept me from contacting Jim about an amp for years.  But the fact is, the dude is the nicest guy to do business with you could imagine.  His work is excellent, and he's probably the most reasonably priced custom amp builder out there.   I also got lucky and ordered mine just as he was finishing up a similar one.  So he put mine up next while the circuit was fresh in his head.  I put 50% down and had the amp in a week.

I ordered it without any upgrades, but he offers any option you can dream up.

That is a super clean design. Shame you have to cover it up…

    Where do you buy/sell?

Sorry, would have responded earlier, but ironically I was on the road to Carter’s.

Something new? Probably Sweetwater or a local mom and pop.

Used? I just drove into Nashville. I still like to touch what I buy. Though I admit, I throughly enjoy browsing the listings on Reverb, eBay, etc.

Selling? I tend to farm that out. I’ve been in the business a long time. I no longer care to go through the mechanics of selling.
