Whoops.  You asked "how well" he plays.

I thought you asked "what" he plays.

That too. I saw at least one pic with a LP. I’m guessing he can play what he wants..

I met him at the old Austin Rehearsal Complex.  Freaked me out.  I went outside to get some air and there was Stevie Stevens.  I half-fanboied him -- "what are you doing here?"

"Rehearsing, dude.  I'm Stevie.  What's your name?"

Good lord, I'm such a dork.

Caught you off guard. Could’ve happened to anybody that is a fan.

What do you guys know about Knaggs? Buddy of mine just acquired this. Guess it’s the Steve Steven’s model. Hadn’t heard of them before he bought. Looks bad ass to me. Gonna get to play it on Sunday.

Steve Stephens is a bad ass. I would pay to watch him tune up.

I saw him on tour with Nels Cline at the Kessler in Dallas.  Damn, what a show.  It was like a musical conversation between two greats.  No rhythm section.  Just two guys with two guitars and nothing else.

Oh, I would have liked to seen that..

i  having a fucked up day.

JM has sold tens of millions of albums and has a bunch of Grammys.  He is one of the biggest pop artists of the last 20 years.  He has no problem writing “commercially successful material” … its just that most of it is pop that doesn’t highlight his guitar playing.   So a better comparator would be someone like Prince (except that JM’s music has no soul).

Yeah, I could have done that better.

  6. I have some thoughts on this. Just my own observations:

I put JM and JB in the same container as I would Johnny Winter, Roy Buchanan, Ariel Bender, Warren Hayes, and a shit ton of other really well known guitarist that simply could not write commercially successful material. They can play like their hands are on fire, but couldn’t write a lick.

…In fact the real shocker is all of those guys couldn’t pack Al de Miola’s lunch, just no gives a shit about jazz fusion.

TexAgs is extremely important in NIL activities moving forward. The co-owner of the site is a lawyer, and they did a lot of research to legally set up the NIL-sponsoring Membership added to their site this year. This is all public info and it was approved by A&M compliance. This NIL-level membership is called Stacked. Alumni pay monthly fees (technically donations) to the Stacked fund, then TexAgs uses these funds to produce exclusive media content with current A&M players.

The reason TexAgs works profitably well is the level of commitment from alumni to organize and support Texas A&M athletics - this in the form of monthly membership for regular content, and now, NIL-level content. TexAgs has a radio/TV studio in College Station where they broadcast a daily radio/TV show for 3 straight hours. They also do tons of exclusive interviews across all sports.

TexAgs also works well because we have over half a million living alumni, with the majority being supportive of A&M athletics post graduation. This is why we are winning the NIL race. I have said it several times here - go ahead and copy the business model, but it will be hard to match the monthly subscriptions year round.

They just used a shit ton of words to say “slush fund”…..

I know I've posted this elsewhere, but Jerry Reed is a genius.  So we've got a Les Paul with what looks like Deluxe pickups on it.  And that tape echo.  And those Ampegs.

    You're welcome.

I saw him, Roy Clark and Glen Campbell at Dockery Farms many, many years ago.

Up until that very night I had no idea that those three men could pick a guitar as fast as anyone alive.

OK, so now I'm confused.  I was corrected that vintage Strats are in the $35K range, and now there's evidence of $250K for a '59.  What's the difference that causes the price hike?

I’m no expert, as my experience is only on those specific years. However, I have not come across a Strat of that group go for under $100k that was authenticated. The more provenance the higher the number.

Couple of other examples. Ed Kings 59 Strat was at Carters a few years back, the asking price was around $250k if I remember correctly.
Joe B also has a 59 he paid over $100k. I don’t remember the provenance, but there was something, something Buddy Holly era story that went with it.

I had to refresh myself on what slab means in context of a stratocaster (a slab of rosewood attached to the maple neck for the fingerboard, rather than a thinner veneer).

My 98 american standard looks slabby, but I don't know when they did what.

    that's "his" son.

that's a good looking strat. I think you guys are right on that an American Fender from that period is a sweet spot for guitar value.

The 59-62 were slabs. A good example is McCready’s 59. His wife paid $250,000 for his. Well, she used his money, but you get the point.

I’m not going back into a Stage 1 cave by any means, but I’m going to temporarily resume some COVID habits such as daily Vitamin C & D, elderberry, and lysine for me and my kids and, yes, masking. My daughter has finals next week, and my son and I have a trip to New York City on June 1, and I really don’t want to fuck those up if I can minimize our chances of catching this variant. Were it otherwise, I’d say come at me bro.

I’m going to spit ball this and say most will have some variation of your strategy. The ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of cure applies here.

No $35k is in the right range.  Saw a lot of 54s at the guitar show in that range. They made a lot more of them then the 1400 or so odd 57-60 LPs.  Hence they're an order of magnitude less expensive.

The slabs bring the real money. You can find a deal on pretty much any other year if you look.

Fuck that shop on general principle for not allowing pictures

I collect firearms, and I recently walked into two different shops that enforced the same policy.
I asked why, and the owners tell me they have a fear of people knowing their specific inventory, and the simply idea that you’re casing the joint. Taking pictures of doors, hallways, etc is verboten.

  14. By chance is anyone familiar with the electric mandolin that Del McCoury plays that looks like a mini Stratocaster?

I tried searching for it, but I found nothing. I’m guessing it was some custom made instrument.

Here you go, but the Sensei 290 isn’t listed on their website and I don’t see any on reverb, so dunno what’s up with them.  Some vids on YouTube as recent as 2 years ago.

Damn, that’s nice. I can’t explain why, but I get a good vibe from that.

Looks like they used to make a Sensei 290 (above is a Sensei JR).  I don’t see any for sale anywhere.

Adding a second pickup changed the look. I would like to see that in red or white.

I like the look of that one a lot, too.  Kind of like an SG had sex with a Les Paul Jr and a Rickenbacher headstock was filming from the closet.   Unfortunately it’s a 24.75” scale length guitar, so rules it out for me.  I kind of like the curves on this contender model, too, but also a shorter scale length.

That just screams rockabilly. The Big’s just looks so natural on that body.
