  1. Fat is a topic I both feel passionate about as well as struggle with. A couple points:

    1) May seem like a shitty humblebrag but I've been blessed with good genes, eat mostly food I cook at home (instead of restaurants) and have done p90x videos fairly religiously since they came out 15 years ago, so I'm in really good shape, as is my wife.  However we are struggling right now with our 7 year old daughter's weight.  She isn't totally fat in the sense that it would be the first thing you'd notice about her, but she's overweight.  She has a mental disorder called "oppositional defiant disorder".  It's really a horrible thing because you'd never know she has a problem, until she starts both verbally and physically assaulting adults.  She was kicked out of her private pre-K program as well as banned from last summer's country club day camps due to her behavior.  The only medicine we've found that really helps her is one that both slows her metabolism and makes her hungry all the time.  Hence, it packs on the lbs.  It's really difficult to manage.  So I don't ever judge fat people, because I don't know their circumstances.  I think an underreported issue with people's weight is the impact of mental issues and the medicine they take for it.  I'm no doctor, just going off what I've seen personally.

    2) I've got enough knowledge of nutrition and exercise to effectively manage my weight.  However, I think the country as a whole could really benefit from a massive initiative to teach these subjects, either in school or somewhere else.  I truly believe people just have no idea what they're doing.  I have a cousin-in-law who is probably 30 years old and 150 lbs overweight, and he posts pictures of him lifting weights showing how he's working to lose weight.  I mean, I guess it's a start but he doesn't appreciate that the impact will come from his diet.  Go watch youtube videos of concerts from the 90s and look at the crowds - no obesity to be seen - it's a shocking contrast to what you see daily today.  I really wish we as a country would do something because it's a true health crisis that people don't appreciate fully.

I can't believe I read the last 2 pages of this slop. I've learned that Sark could be wetting his whistle, our O-line is eternally doomed and I heard an aggie kind of make sense.

    I'm out for the weekend.

See you all again in 10 to 15 minutes.

For me the last 2 days have been a brilliant success.  Via the NIL discussions, I was made aware of Olivia Dunne and have thoroughly enjoyed her instagram content.

Hell yeah @Ravishing Rick good job! You saved yourself a shit ton of money and your yard looks a lot better. I'd give it a little time and see how it progresses.

What time of day are you watering? Treated with fungicide?

I'm pretty sure I screwed up the watering.  I watered for 7 minutes at 7:30am, and then 14 minutes at 9:30pm.  Most of the "brown squares" were waterlogged and the soil had washed away.  Today I replaced those with new sod squares, and switched my watering to 5 minutes at 7:30am and 5 minutes at 1:30pm.  I read where watering at night wasn't ideal, nor was having a soggy yard (which I definitely had).

Thanks @freyguy for the dillo dirt suggestion.  I live in Dallas so I'm not sure we have that here, but I did spread some Black Kow (manure) over some of the trouble spots.  Hopefully that has a similar effect.

All in it took 3 pallets of St Aug (I guess my yard is more like 1,250 sq ft) and maybe $150 in top soil/Black Kow, so I saved over $6,000 doing this.  Additionally, since I did this myself, I burned a shit ton of calories.  I tracked them, and over a 4 day period I burned 2100, 1500, 1800 and 1500 calories.  Almost 7,000 calories total over the 4 days.  Pretty sure that equals out to about 2 lbs.  It was hot as hell throughout.  Definitely a lot of work, but the board's inspiration kept me going.  Thanks!!

My front yard's grass looks like shit.  It's St Augustine, and the dead spots are where winter grass is (dies in the hot summer).  I've got a quote for $7,000 to rip it all up (1,000 sq ft total) and put in zoysia.  Don't really feel like paying all that money.  It's fairly shaded, but does get some sun.  Any suggestions?  Perhaps scrape out the winter grass/dead spots and put in St Augustine sod? Or plugs?  Please help!

Update:  After rejecting my landscaping company's $7,000 quote for 1,000 sq ft of zoysia sod, I took the board's advice and did it myself. A week and a half later, below is the pic of half the yard.  I decided to go with St Augustine (Palmetto).  Unfortunately some of the sod squares are browning out.  I think it's because I got a pretty shitty pallet of sod and some of the undersides were dry AF and coming apart.  I've been watering like a MF, but they just aren't coming back.  Any advice to bring these back to green??  Worst case I go get a few more sod squares...easy enough.

    That's the spirit!

If you want to have fun in the yard and have 7k for a budget I can find better ways to spend it.

That dead spot isn't a lot of turf. A standard pallet of sod is 400-450 sq. ft. They will happily deliver it for an additional fee. Before you go spending money on new sod though, of any kind, I want to know why it died.

I sound like a broken record, but disease is the number one issue I see with St. Augustine. It's particularly susceptible to Take All Root Rot. Brown patch is not hard to clear up, gray leaf spot isn't too bad either, but TARR is a pain in the ass.

There is no consensus on treatment for it.

There are indications that a top dressing of peat moss can suppress TARR for up to 2 years.

There are lists of fungicides of various kinds available from ag schools across the nation. None have proven infallible. It's start chucking bullets and hope one or more of them sticks. I tend to prefer thiophanate methyl as a starter. Myclobutanil, propiconazole, and azoxystrobin are sometimes rec'd and sometimes not. Combining chlorothalonil and t-methyl has been done too, both as roll your own and premixed.

Here's the thing though. Ripping it all out and planting zoysia might get you right back where you are right now in a year or so. They can do some remedial prep for the sod but without an ongoing maintenance program there's a good chance those pathogens swim right back in the root wound once their numbers rebound.

Could say fuck it, throw down some rocks and plant some ferns.

Very helpful and valuable advice. Thanks, men!  Tomorrow I start ripping it up!  Will plan on using the T Methyl on the new sod to start. Decided to plant St Aug again, rather than zoysia.

that quote is fucking ridiculous. 1000 sq ft is nothing - wife and i did 7 pallets of zoysia on my yard (3500 sq ft).

    what i did:

lay down pre-emergent and water it in.

put lawn mower on lowest setting and mowed it all after the pre-emergent set in (gave it a few days)

go back with the weed eater and took it all down to the bare dirt. Fill in with top soil as needed to make it even

order pallets of zoysia from grass outlet (they'll deliver it). I think it's about $230 or so per pallet of zoysia. one pallet covers 450 sq ft or so, so you'll need at least 2.

lay it down, add fertilizer, and water the hell out of it for 2 weeks.

    just saved you $6500.

P.S. Nice truck - have that same exact one.

Many thanks.  Sounds easy enough, I'm sure I'll find a way to fuck it up, but even if I do so 3-4 times, I'll still save a lot of money.

    Who said anything about "promises"?

    Why invoke the portal even?

They're trying to bring in 3 backs in 2022 (Sawchuk, Barnes, Brown would be ideal), but none of them are very big and having a big back to block and short yardage is valuable.

Oh, I beg your pardon.  Let me re-phrase for you.  Any OU player "hoping to ascend" on the depth chart due to players leaving for the league might want to consider Lincoln's transfer portal actions the last few years.  He will find another player to jump you faster than you can say dry brisket.

If Major leaves because of depth chart concerns now, it would be a poor decision. OU's had to have FB play RB because of injuries in consecutive years, so depth has been an issue for a while. Furthermore, as I showed, Major, if he doesn't get carries this year, may still ascend because OU may lose Brooks and Gray to the league next year. Also, Major is one of only 2 "big" back for OU this year so he's a scarce resource in this regard. Not saying Major will stay, just saying there are rational reasons for him to stay.

Lincoln promising playing time “next year” has no credibility. He will find someone in the transfer portal faster than you can say belly tat.

Please hire Childress then get back to what y’all were in the 2000’s. Miss that little baseball rivalry we had

Would love that. Just give us Coach Pierce and CDC back and we will make it happen.

  11. Rice alum checking in... Bragga was a complete abortion of a hire.  The AD at Rice is a fucking clown (Joe Karlgaard...came from Stanford).  Wayne Graham had recommended Pat Hallmark as his successor, and the AD didn't listen.  Pat has gone on to some nice results at Incarnate Word and now UTSA.  Then Lance Berkman was publicly politicking for the job, but at the same time he appeared in a Houston commercial about his opposition to trannies in women's bathrooms or some shit like that and the Rice President decided that wasn't on brand for Rice, so Berkman was out.  Berkman also managed to piss off some donors.  Now I'm hearing through sources that Pat Hallmark won't work for the douche AD (can't blame him).

Sean Allen has major ties to the Houston area, given his playing and coaching career across town at U of H.  Would be an instant recruiting shot in the arm.  The candidates I'm hearing about at Pat Hallmark, Sean Allen, Rob Childress, Tom Arrington (San Jac) and Jake Gautreau (Miss St. Asst....former Tulane player).  I'd be happy with any of those.  The decision makers will be the Rice President who doesn't give two shits about sports (think Mr Burns from the Simpsons) and the AD who is simply incompetent.  I completely expect them to fuck it up.

one of these is not like the other

    • Woodard career: 7 catches, 62 yards, 0 TD
    • Harrison career: 0 catches, 0 yards, 0 TD
    • Estelle career: 0 catches, 0 yards, 0 TD
    • Josh Moore career: 37 catches, 525 yards, 10 TD

Did Moore have any off field issues in the last 12 months that I am forgetting?

It’s been suggested on social media that some apartment walls ran into his fist.  Not clear on who started the fight.

USC might be more entitled and Ohio State might rival LSU fans in an IQ race to the bottom but I have yet to find the toxic combination of entitlement and self righteousness that the Chicago area Michigan fans have. Imagine the cuntiness of a Rice or Northwestern fan with the entitlement of the worst kind of Texas fan. And imagine the worst 1% of that toxic mix as the moderators of their fan sites. I hope we fucking tampered to get Worthy and I hope Sark drags his nuts all over their entire fan base in the process.

I’m a Rice fan, and I resemble that remark.
