Any GM taking Ewers before the 3rd round is making a monumental mistake based on this year's film. I watched the SNF game last night with Burrow and Herbert. They were making throws that Ewers couldn't dream of making at this point.

IMO, 3rd round to a competent organization might not be that bad, all in all.  The Simms interview from earlier highlighted it: he's a first-read guy and holds the ball too long.  I do not know if that was always the case, though.

In the year he was recruited, QB rankings (draft year and slot in parens - or present status):

    1. Ewers (Texas by way of tosu)
    2. Caleb Williams (2024 1.1)
    3. Sam Huard (Utah, by way of Washington and Cal Poly)
    4. Drake Maye (2024 1.3)
    5. Brock Vandagriff (Kentucky QB by way of Georgia)
    6. JJ McCarthy (2024 1.10)

Burrow and Herbert are exceptional, no doubt.  Perhaps they are not a fair comparison, as I see them in the top-quartile of NFL QBs.  Then again, the #1 QB recruit *should* project to a first or second round draft pick.

That 202 draft was loaded: Burrow (1.1), Tua (1.5), Herbert (1.6), Jordan Love (1.26), Hurts (2.21).

  2. This year's QB draft class is not exactly great, so it is a good year for him to go pro.  NFL Draft Buzz has a QB ranking for the 2025 draft.

    1. Sanders
    2. Ward
    3. Ewers
    4. Milroe
    5. Nussmeier
    6. Beck
    7. Gabriel
    8. Altair
    9. Rourke
    10. Klubnick
    11. Dart

CBS has Ewers as the #3 QB and #18 overall prospect.
ESPN has Ewers as the #3 QB and #34 overall prospect.

We've seen so much of Ewers that most of us would declare "he's not the 3rd best QB coming out" or "he sucks" or whatever.  Sanders is the clear #1 QB (IMO).  After that, it's up in the air.
In 2024, 6 QBs were picked in the top-12 picks: Williams, Daniels, Maye, Penix, McCarthy, Nix.  The next QB - Spencer Rattler - was not picked until the 5th round.

Teams who may be looking for a QB - and be wiling to spend a high round pick on it.

    1. NYG
    2. Browns
    3. Panthers
    4. Raiders
    5. Dolphins
    6. Titans
    7. Rams

Very few new mock drafts have Ewers in the first round, but many have him in 2nd round.

  3. Cignetti just got a new 8-year contract, nearly doubling his salary.

    https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/42423807/sources-curt-cignetti-gets-new-deal-indiana-10-0-start

Cignetti's new eight-year contract runs through the 2032 season and will pay him an average of $8 million per year with an annual $1 million retention bonus, putting the total value of the new contract at $72 million.

Cignetti originally received a six-year, $27 million contract when he was hired in December. He took the Indiana job after leading James Madison to an 11-1 season in 2023 -- when he made $677,311 -- with the goal of changing the Hoosiers' historically woeful image in football.

  4. The undercard fights were quite good.  Paul/Tyson was not a good fight.  In the early rounds, Paul evaded, so as to not get knocked out.  In the later rounds, Paul did not seem to want to put him away.  8 rounds is good for the sponsors, etc.  Roy Jones started referring to Tyson's legs in the late 2nd round.  I noticed his inability (or unwillingness) to move in the 3rd or so.  Tyson had a clear limp later in the match.  He was injured from before the match.  As has been noted, Tyson threw harder punches during his training/sparring.

The stream delivery problems were extremely frustrating, as it made it difficult for non-boxing-watching folks to see a good fight, which each of the undercards were.  The Taylor-Serrano fight was quality and very entertaining.

    A couple of additional comments:
Ranallo, Perez, and Jones did not really seem to prepare for the fights, aside from watching highlights or reading a couple of twitter feeds.  Ranallo was questioning whether Taylor continued to intentionally head-butt Serrano.  More than once, Jones said, "She leads with her head and is left-handed, so this kind of thing happens when a left-hander fights a right-hander."  Is she intentionally doing it?  Not sure, but leading with her head is a tactic and her style.  Then, Jones kept referring to Tyson adjusting his mouthpiece, to which Ranallo noted, "he's biting his glove.  He's always done that."

2 hours in a room together preparing and they'd have been better.

I've heard interviews with Paul early in his career, and he comes across as a fairly humble - yet confident - person.  These days, he's a caricature of a human and comes across as a real douche.  That said, he has found his money machine.

Last, aside from the money, this was a no-win situation for Paul.  Win by KO early and he beat the shit out of an old man.  Win in 8 and he wore an old man down.  Lose and he lost to an old man.

Arky's offense is the best that Texas has played this season...

    Ok.  Arkansas averages 483 YPG.

    687 - Arkansas pinebluff (w)
    648 - OSU (l)
    673 - MSU (w)

For the other 6 games, they average 390.

We only did 523 against MSU.  I think we will be fine.

11am kickoff is not the only advantage. It's also nice to have this game scheduled during hunting season. No joke, I think that's also hurting the ticket demand.

Squirrel and opossum have limits or time constraints in Arkansas?

One other factor with Cignetti - he's 63. His career's been a slow burn. If he wants a blueblood job he doesn't have time to give IU three years, he needs to take it now. Works in OU's favor.

Good point.  He's certainly no spring chicken, but 63 can still be relatively young for this game.

I do think one potential negative against Cignetti is the current NIL/transfer landscape of college football.  He's been at a big conference program for less than one full season, and he didn't have to deal with roster management on the NIL/portal level at places like James Madison and Elon.  Recruiting is one thing -- it's relating to players and their families and selling them on your program, playing time, etc.  But it might cause OU some hesitation to hire a guy with no significant experience in what is now a significant part of a head coaches responsibilities.  And it's not like Venables has shown that roster/portal management is a strength for him.

Indiana has ~15 seniors and ~20 transfers on its 2-deep.  9 of those transfers are from JMU, and most of those are seniors.  Other transfers are from Ohio (not St), Wake Forest, Old Dominion, Texas Tech.  He's put together a good team and he's a good coach.  Can he do that in another place?

It's wild someone can have this opinion after we all saw the 2021 game with our own eyes. It's one thing to have this opinion 3 years ago before it proved to be dead wrong. Maintaining this take now is truly impressive. Bravo, sir. You belong here.

For some strange reason, I decided to look at the box score from that game.

Hudson Card's statline in that game resembles many of his Purdue stat lines this year.

Arkansas rushed for 333 yards.  The top 6 rushers (QB included) all transferred from Arkansas at some point:
    Trelon Smith - UTSA
    KJ Jefferson - UCF
    AJ Green - Okie State
    Raheim Sanders - South Carolina
    Dominique Johnson - TCU
    Malik Hornsby - ArkSt

That's an epic level of turnover.

Yes, so instead we will just make up a bunch of horseshit about how they will get boat raced and then all of the sudden when Indiana is good and plays Ohio state close and maybe even wins everyone in here just says oh no maybe they are good?

Watch some fucking football. Indiana is a good football team. They would fucking smoke Miami who is a bad football team with an insanely good QB.

I have watched Indiana a bunch this year.  They are a very good football team: well coached, very disciplined, very experienced. They have 15 or so senior starters on offense and defense.  They have 20 transfer players in the 2-deep.  Last season is irrelevant to this IU team, fwiw (not that you are saying that).

I believe the spread will be tOSU -14.  I alluded to this earlier, but I have a gut feel that tOSU will beat the spread, because of difference in athleticism and home-field.  Perhaps I am giving too mich credit to that.

Now - after thinking about it more, I can see it being closer and/or seeing an IU win.  First, Cignetti is a very good coach; IMO better than Day.  Second, IU does not make a lot of mistakes - they have 7 turnovers all year.  3rd, the discipline and experience should pay off.  4th, you can always count on Will Howard to shoot himself in the foot against good competition.

I want an IU win, and big, btw.

Yep and yep.  Ohio State likely smokes IU and IU likely smokes Card and Purdue.  Irrespective of what I said above, 11-1 for Indiana is pretty amazing.

I think Indiana can name its score against Purdue.  I've watched almost all Purdue games this year (2 in person) and Purdue is horribad.  The game is at IU and I suspect they'll want to show something on 11/30 after tOSU crushes them the week before.  I'm guessing tOSU will be a 14 point favorite and will win by around 20.  IU will be a 27 point favorite over Purdue and will win by whatever score they want.
