  1. he homered in 40% of his games last year.  not sure "unreal" is the right word.  "impressive" better describes it.

of course judge struck out on 3 pitches.  guess the tweet will come later about how hard he swung.

Which, of course, was added to 'spice things up'. And basically annoyed the hard core while doing little to attract non-baseball fans.

it was fun for a minute.  until it wasn't.  now it's just regular.

  3. yes, i too get most of my sports news from a mommy blogger on the huffington post.

there are certainly problems with baseball (and every sport) but i don't think you've really hit on any of them.  to me, the real issue is that the gap between the haves/super-teams and the have-not/rebuilding teams is crazy right now.  and the cubs and astros established how the process can work, which is going to torture certain fanbases for 3-5 years.  it's also shown that it's better to go all-in (lose 90-100) for a couple years and rebuild, vs winning 75-80 games every year.

attendance/popularity aside, the league in real trouble is the nfl.  most people can see that.

  4. they lengthened the season this year to provide more rest/weather days, so today is a pretty standard opening day for everyone - when in years past it had been staggered.  so i like that.  but it'll never start on a sunday - i think thursday or friday makes more sense anyway.  and not everyone has a rival or team with history to play, so that's just an impossible ask.  the other sports don't do that either - it's more of a collegiate thing.

and ever since they made houston go to the al, there will always be a "rangers playing the phillies" on opening day scenario.  interleague isn't unique anymore, it happens everyday.  i don't love it, but with 15/15 there's no avoiding it.

best record establishes world series home field, so that's not an issue.

personally, i'm fine with my favorite sport not catering to the uber casual fan.  baseball makes you work for it.  if you're too lazy for that, there are 5-6 months of pointless playoff basketball coming soon.

  5. been binging mlb network all day.  two of my favorite genius insights:

from high heat with russo (nym fan) and francesa (nyy fan) on why the astros under 97.5 is a good bet:

    "the bullpen's not that great"

    "oh it's terrible"

and on their regular show, matt v said something to the tune of "man i'm so excited for yankees opening day.  i mean, i feel like 90% of people i run into in the hallways feel exactly like that."  but hey, at least there's no east coast bias.

I don’t think so. I read an interview with a show creator where he mentions how boring it would be to write the same type of show over and over.

yeah, consistently funny and entertaining shows are such a chore to watch as well.

  7. if you haven't watched larry sanders, just stop whatever you're doing, and watch 2-3 eps a night until you're done.  it's fucking genius and was so far ahead of its time.

the office, 30 rock, parks and rec, modern family - pretty much any single cam sitcom or "inside" type show drew from this, whether it's admitted or not.

in an interview i heard with apatow years ago, he mentioned how working on larry sanders was basically just like working for garry, in that the storylines were the same.  talk show wars, insecurity, dating issues - larry was garry.  in an episode i rewatched recently, there was an exchange that perfectly encapsulates the similarities.  after a break-in (which larry incorrectly assumes is a stalker), he's sitting with a security specialist about installing a new alarm system.

larry - is this the same system letterman has?

security guy - mr sanders, i'm sure you can understand i cannot discuss mr letterman's configuration with you anymore than i could discuss your configuration with mr letterman, if he were to ask.

larry - has he asked about my configuration?

they need to kill off richard or return back to season 1 richard. he's completely unlikable

yeah, nervous and neurotic worked better with the plot.  aggressive and vindictive, yet utterly hopeless in every social or professional setting is tough to watch and impossible to root for.  he doesn't even seem to be good at whatever he's supposed to be good at anymore.

  9. so i've been reading some previews, and it seems our only "weakness" is our bullpen.

giles, peacock, devo, harris, mchugh, j.smith, rondon + the ability to acquire 1-2 guys in july.  i know rondon has had a rocky spring, but smith has been great.  i have no idea what role mchugh will play - maybe just a spot starter while we rotate guys on and off the 10-day.  that should save the arms in the pen quite a bit.

yeah, i'm ok with our bullpen weakness.
