  1. Going back 10 years, OU's never had more than 5 top-100 players in a class (247 composite). In OU got only 2 top-100 players 5 times and only 1 in 2016. I use top-100 as a metric instead of stars because star rankings appear to be inflating over the last 3-4 years. So far, OU has 7 top-100 players committed this year. They're projected to add an 8th tonight (Vickers) and have a shot to add more (Bowen?, Renaud?, Akana?, Hicks?). They've won high profile recruitments that they'd never be a part of in the past (eg, LeBlanc and Carter out of FL) and taken lower ranked players who have gained acclaim over the summer (eg, Adebawore, Spencer). Part of this is Venables connections in the SE and his earned reputation as a defensive coach, and part of it will be OU's expanded recruiting infrastructure. I'm still puzzled as to how they're doing this with limited NIL. My only complaints at this point are CB and RB recruiting, two positions where recruiting rankings translate well. It seems like OU's in on a bunch of high profile safeties (Vickers, Bowen, Yaites and McCarty will be a safety too). Wagoner is their only true CB projection. Apparently Vickers is going to tried at CB first, but Bama wanted him at safety, not CB and he's highly regarded as a safety, not CB. There's no reason OU shouldn't be getting top RB annually. Murray, outside of last year, continues to underwhelm.
  2. Looks like Hooters is projecting a start 5-6.
  3. Last year cousins from California were visiting my parents who still live in small town Oklahoma. The cousins wanted the Oklahoma experience so my parents, who never go to Cracker Barrel, took them to one off I-40. Everyone got Covid. So yeah, diabetes and Covid.
  4. I'm not defending the decision, but the trophy is only a totem to acknowledge the greatness of the 1974 team, which won the more widely recognized national championship and was clearly the dominant team that year. Unfortunately, AP national championship doesn't come with a tangible symbol. Here's the SRS for 1974 (I couldn't find Bill Connelly's 1974 write up). It shows OU's team a massive 5 points ahead of the #2 team (Alabama) and 7 points ahead of the UPI/Coaches poll winner (USC). 2008 Texas was still #3 in SRS and other advanced metrics (reference also below). https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/years/1974-ratings.html https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/years/2008-ratings.html
  5. The improprieties punished in 1974 were committed under Fairbank$. If I recall, it was transcript shenanigans for a player that had little to no impact in 1971-72. The 1974 team was so far ahead of the nation because most of Texas and the SEC hadn't fully embraced integration.
  6. OU has enough tradition that they don't need to resort to this. But the 1974 OU team was one of the best in college football teams in history. The average score of their games was 43 - 8. Their closest game was a 3 point win over UT, but every other win was 14 points or more. USC, 10-1-1, was named the UPI (Coaches Poll) champion. It was obvious who the best team in the country was that year.
  7. This is a great lesson in outcomes-based decision making. Neyor made the right decision for his career (and possibly personally because I think he's from Texas). The outcome has been, so far, unfortunate. Because the outcome, to date, hasn't been optimal, did he make a bad decision? NO. This is poor logic. Hopefully, your example will serve as a guide to others even if you continue to make this type of mistake.
  8. Cat Gundy, wordsmith. Her picture hints that she may be an "entertainer."
  9. If you include his playing career and one year as a GA, it's 29 years. For those of you disagreeing with me about OU fans being more similar to A&M fans, here's the proof. And @Huckleberry and @WinningIsHard have it right. Cale did a lot positive for OU and now he's got to go. Venables has done the right thing. Soon there will be position battle or an injury to talk about, and Florida State or another team will have their on debacle. If Venables had let Gundy hang on, it would have been a constant distraction. Because he admitted to the error and fell on the sword, Gundy is more likely to get his second chance sooner.
  10. I lived in Houston for 5 years and Dallas for 3 years. I grew up in Oklahoma. I've had plenty of experience with all three groups. Could be generational or specific sample. And come on, how can anyone from OK call any other place "hick and stick."
  11. I think OU and A&M share more culturally than either do with UT. That shared culture was creating a lot of animosity when both were in the Big12, and the rivalry was really heating up. It'll be interesting to see what the pod structure in SEC is. If OU and A&M share a pod, I can see Sooner-Aggie hatefest going to 11.
  12. https://www.baptistmessenger.com/clemson-coach-chavis-recounts-radical-transformation/ This is unsurprising but still worthy of a huge eye roll. The new OU staff is wearing their social views on their sleeve. It may alienate most, but it appears to be attractive to enough players. This is why Lebby was a hypocritical hire. These attitudes are tolerated when teams are winning and in an insular state like Oklahoma. Patty Gasso's doing this for OU softball with great success. We'll see how it play for young men playing football.
  13. Lebby's employment is the #1 example of Venables' hypocrisy.
  14. When initially stated, I agreed. But continuing the usual tacit of allowing players to take other visits hadn't worked out so well for OU. In 2021, prior to Riley's departure, they lost their entire WR class (Burden, Shettron, Hudson). The 2020 class lost 2 players to Bama and 1 to A&M, Ohio St, Oregon, and Miami. So far, there's been surprisingly little evidence of this strict policy dissuading players (1 decommit, Cozart). Despite this policy and apparently limited NIL, the OU recruiting staff is doing remarkably well. That's the point. Venables isn't like that any more. He and those in the program indicate that he's kinder-gentler. The program itself has a whole personal development arm largely staffed by former players. Let's see if it sticks when there is adversity.
  15. Dunno. They're going after Ryan Yaites too. He would also be good. The weird thing is that I can't see OU getting all these guys with an anemic NIL program, regardless of Venables reputation. The information we have on the NIL stuff in Norman indicates that it is just now getting off the ground.
  16. Rumor is that one of the locks is a flip.
  17. I agree, the most buzz is about these guys, but doesn't it seem like a best-case scenario? OU hasn't gotten 3 top 100 players on the defense since 2018. In fact, they've only had 3 in the last 4 years. Vickers, Johnson, and Renaud would make 4 top 100 defenders in Venables first year (LeBlanc is #101 at 247). This is before on-field production and with OU apparently still at an NIL disadvantage. Even without Hicks and Bowen, that would something I'm sure the Coach would drink too. Arguing in favor of your prediction, especially on the DL, they don't seem to many backup options identified.
  18. This will be one of the more fascinating story lines of the next couple of seasons. Handing very, very large sums of money to slightly older basketball players in the 1990s went over so well the NBA Players Association agree to a union contract that prevents it.
  19. I think Venables and Gundy share a lot. They are both excellent, process-driven football coaches who've maximized success that their positions have allowed. Their players mostly have glowing things to say about them. They've also shown themselves to have reactionary social views and have committed some ridiculous faux pas. The OK media has allowed them to get away with it for a number of reasons. There's nothing wrong with being country. I'm country. But being country doesn't explain these coaches social views or podium performances.
  20. That quote is so over the top that it's hard to parody.
