Just watched Season 2, Episode 17 where Hank has a nervous breakdown as his Look Around Cafe is about to have its grand opening. Burt Reynolds guest stars in this episode and it reminded me of a story that Peter Tolan, one of the main writers/directors of The Larry Sanders Show, told about Burt in an interview years ago.
Tolan said Burt came to work on The Larry Sanders Show in a really bad mood, just pissy the entire day of shooting. At one point, Burt starts trashing a set piece and storms off into his trailer. All of the crew were stunned and like "WTF?", but also too intimidated to confront him. Some low level associate produce was willing to go to Burt's trailer and knocked on his door. He went into the trailer and Burt was sitting in a chair in the dark with his head in his hands. The first thing he said was, "I was the #1 box office movie star from 1972 to 1976."
Tolan said it was fitting because a big theme of The Larry Sanders show is how cruel and tough it is to work in Hollywood.

No beef with any of that but to be clear, it's certainly not only us. There's a LOT of this going on in Europe as well. The parallels between a lot of 'first world' countries and 1930's Germany are there. The main reason is the massive disparities we see in wealth. The wealthy don't want the masses coming after them so they blame the immigrant/brown guy. Also that obviously works better on stupid people - hence the concerted effort to wreck the education system at all levels.
A lot of truth to this. On the English side of my family, I have relatives that are very working class; my cousin is a hairdresser, her husband a black cab driver (his dad was a black cab driver, his uncle is Alan Ford, the actor that played Brick Top in Snatch, haha awesome). My cousin and her family left London for the cheaper deserts of Spain probably 25 years ago. Her husband always bitched about all the immigrants/crime in the UK, kind of a Trumper before it was cool. Love the guy, but I think they were just sick of barely getting by in London.

So this guy I know, we’ll call him Steve, that used to work for the military and traveled around the world quite frequently told me of an interaction he had with some older Germans on train in the 1960s… These Germans tried to claim that they had no idea Hitler would be such a monster when they voted for him, and they pleaded ignorance.
Steve claims he immediately dressed them down telling them that was complete and utter horseshit. They knew exactly what they were voting for and got exactly what they deserved in the end.
I think about this story a lot with the Trump people that have been given every opportunity imaginable to come to their senses and not support Trump. I guarantee almost every one of them will go to their graves thinking president Kamala Harris would have been worse and proud of their Trump vote.
“The Democrats made me vote for fascists” isn’t going to hold up like they think it will when they encounter a Steve on the train one day.
Interesting, thanks for sharing.
In the ability for many to self-reflect is a huge problem. And this supports my completely unresearched cuckoo theory that having/not having an inner monologue might be the simplest answer for why people feel so disconnected from each other.

There's a point when it stops being about the money and starts being about power.

I don't know why it's not talked about more, but I'm so fucking sick and tired of NY politicians and the spotlight they get politically.
The Cuomos, Eric Adams, Chuck Schumer, Jeffries, TRUMP, Giuliani, Hillary, De Blasio, Bloomberg, etc. Fucking enough.
NYC is a wonderful and dynamic city. But can we please stop treating it like the face of the USA? It resembles none of the rest of America. And they are really shitty at electing politicians.

The most sacred and sensitive issue for all of these dumbfucks is their Trump vote. The only thing they can't admit was wrong. What a world.

Critical thinking and reasoning is dead with half this country. Strategize accordingly.

this is where I am at. it's way too early to get hopped up on one candidate or another. we still have 18 months till the midterms and things could look markedly different - or abysmally worse - by then. I have a feeling someone will emerge that is popular to the right people, enough to at the very least put a pause on this slide into fascism
What frustrates me a bit is a lot of Dem voters' desires to counter Trump with a left version of an individual that can "save" this country. America is obsessed with finding an idol. POTUS should be a steward. We need to run this shit.

In a way, the lack of Dem leadership now is a good thing. The people see how out of touch and worthless current leaders have been and are realizing that they need to take their own action. Let's see how the mass protest on June 14th plays out.

There are 2 bad guys here right now.
1) violent protesters who are fucking things up for the peaceful protesters and actually vandalising and doing damage to stuff.
2) law enforcement and military who are present and exacerbating things by acting like the peaceful protesters are all violent.

1) Believe that we should continue to have a Republic instead of an autocratic Monarchy, subject to no checks, balances, or laws.
2) Believe in baseline human rights and treating human beings like human beings.
Everything else is secondary, because without those two things, not a single other thing fucking matters.
Exactly. When/if I get shit from friends or family saying "Hank is a bleeding heart lefty!", I don't get offended. You're goddamned right I have a steadfast belief system and moral compass. And I feel exactly zero shame or doubt about it. It feels good. It's liberating.

But then when I talk about it, here come 58 'I told you so's' as if the left's shit is also squared away.
Yes, those who deep down question their own beliefs tend to be the ones that get most offended when called out on it.
But that's on you. Own up to it and change for the better. In the end, people will welcome you into the fold.

You know, watching what's unfolding with Trump's blatantly political assault on the people of this country, he and his administration probably see this as a test for those that are against him. "How far can we go? What can we get away with?" But I feel pretty confident that half this country will go to war against the government if they keep this up. They're crossing a line and the people will fight back.
The real test here is for his supporters and people that voted for him. Are they gonna dig in when this gets bloody? When the economy and markets crash? Are they willing to sacrifice everything for Trumpism? The reality is MAGA is completely based on cowardice. Maybe they think everyone else is like them. We are on the path of fucking around and finding out.

Saw another clip where Ben Griffin said he'd take +4 for the tournament and thinks it'd be enough to win.

I haven't paid close attention, but it feels like Bryson has reined in his driver a bit and is hitting fairways more consistently these days. He's not a meathead bomber anymore.

It’s not an overly long course - check the DJ win. Ball strikers galore on the leaderboard but some wild guys like ZJ are up there late. I think a guy like Morikawa could contend
Yeah, I saw a clip yesterday from DJ's PC. He said all he really remembers about his win at Oakmont is he drove the ball straight the entire week.
-
If Scottie plays well for 4 days, he wins running away. His skills/mentality/management are a perfect fit at Oakmont compared to the rest of the field. But the course is so difficult that he could play poorly and flat out miss the cut.
Super excited about this one.

I've never felt so clueless about how a tournament will play out.
Outside of Scottie/Rory/Bryson, a lot of the top players have been really inconsistent this year. But since it will most likely take playing great golf 4 straight days to contend, I don't see how the lower tier players have a chance. Gonna be fascinating.

Season 2, Episode 18 - "NY or LA"
Great season finale. A new company buys the network and jeopardizes the future of the show. Larry contemplates going to ABC and moving to NY, which infuriates the staff and crew. Fed up with everything, he decides to quit on air and moves to Montana. Howard Stern and Chris Farley guest star.
