  1. If there was a “Bama” of El Paso football it’d be Canutillo. They had a memorable run all the way to the state semifinals in 2014. They haven’t replicated that since but they’re routinely solid and are the only team from out there that usually avoids embarrassment in the playoffs.

Might be an interesting game, except for being in Lubbock.
Emerson is pretty strong for a #3 in district. Lost close games to Argyle and Lake Dallas, who are both on to round 2. Beat the snot out of everyone else.
  2. Here's your fun with neutral sites scheduling Game of the Week:

Friend’s kid plays for Frisco Emerson and was complaining about driving 5.5 hrs to a neutral site game in Lubbock.

They are playing the Canutillo Eagles. Canutillo is apparently a “Census Designated” area in El Paso. According to Wiki the original HS was built in 1960 and was actually on the west side of the Rio Grande.

  3. I get what you said about teachers, but am laughing because that's the opposite of me.  Believe it or not, the jury I served on was commandeered by two flight attendants fitting that description.

I would have been humming this tune.

“Sanitation expert and a maintenance engineer
Garbage man, a janitor and you my dear
A reunion flight attendant my oh my
You ain't nothing but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothing but a waitress in the sky”
  4. Region 2 is all over the place in the current alignment, you got schools from the DFW, Austin area, Houston area and East Texas in there.  It’s such a mixed bag, there are going to be a couple of teams in each bracket that are going to have to travel far in the first round.
Cedar Hill is playing at Pflugerville Weiss. Hutto is playing at Duncanville etc.

Yeah. New Caney is playing in Longview now.
Willie Nelson for the Lobo pick 6!
  5. I'm quite fond of the old massive-wood-plinth 'tables like your AR and certain Thorens, Linn, SOTA, etc.  Never got into Dual.  And then there were the alien spaceship designs (Oracle, etc.).  I actually owned an Oracle Alexandria II for quite a while, it was pretty understated, but still not as beautiful as my old Thorens was.
Same 'table, but I had an S-shaped tonearm:

Yeah I love those too. My early 80s Denon has a lovely Redwood plinth.

  6. Any steaming games on YouTube this week?

I think if it’s not on NFHS schools can request to broadcast games. I know Texarkana Gameday is showing both the Pleasant Grove and Texas High first round games.

“2023-2024 Post Season Video Broadcast Information
Live or tape-delayed video broadcasts of a postseason contest require approval from the UIL. The UIL retains all broadcast rights to postseason contests and has granted rights to its broadcast partners. The UIL’s broadcast partners have first rights to all postseason activities and if a broadcast partner selects a contest for broadcast, in most cases an additional broadcast cannot be approved.”
For 2023-2024, the UIL’s broadcast partners are the NFHS Network and Bally Sports Southwest

  7. Last night I checked out the new episode of Live at Daryl's House on youtube, with Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke.  Then I started diving into Daryl and H&O stuff. ended up binging for a good while.

War Babies seems more like a Todd Rundgren album with H&O as his instruments. It sounds so damn good. The whole album is a trip.

Yeah, I pulled that one out yesterday. Cool LP. Stylistically all over the place but that was Todd at the time. Two guys from the recently formed Utopia play on it too.
  8. I've been relistening to a lot of Elton John stuff after reading Bernie Taupin's autobiography.  I've really gotten back in to "Tumbleweed Connection", especially the CD version which includes a different version of "Madman Across The Water" with Mick Ronson on guitar instead of the version on the "Madman" album that was released the following year, with Davey Johnstone on guitar.  Mick adds so much more urgency and tension to the song.  Plus, I LOVE "My Father's Gun".

    Love that album.
Made me go back and listen to Rod Stewart’s “Gasoline Alley” cause it has his cover of Country Comfort. I think it was released about 6 months before “Tumbleweed Connection”. He utilized a lot of his Faces bandmates so pretty good stuff.

  9. This is actually a really good question.  A lot of dumbasses really love their HOAs, but it'd be hilarious if this blew that wide open and allowed people to circumvent the HOAs.

    From DMN:
“This proposition could affect everything from backyard chickens to 1,000-acre farms, but its impetus is increasingly restrictive codes in homeowners association-heavy suburban neighborhoods near agriculture producers. Even opponents of this proposition admit that local zoning laws have been “weaponized” with outrageous requirements like installing shields so neighbors can’t see cattle mating. Within reason, landowners should be free to do what they want with their land. This proposition would not affect ordinances needed to conserve natural resources or protect animal health.”

  10. Our good friend Chelsea Davis, RIP, erstwhile patent lawyer and florid bipolar schizophrenic, was a TCA grad.
ETA:  Correction, Clark, son of Lamar, current owner of KC Chiefs, went to St. Marks, not TCA.

I figured every Texan would be familiar with the Hunt family. I don’t know if there is anybody more influential in the current national sports landscape than Lamar.
