We were planning a month long trip to Spain and Portugal this Fall but that’s out now. Less about the money but more about potential issues with locals and other European tourists

If I go anywhere outside the US, I'm making Fuck Trump t-shirts for the family and wearing those everywhere we go.

I sold all of my long term holdings a little over a month ago and have been quite happy with holding that plus its proft in a money market earning interest and not losing 15-20% of its value. Decided to stay on Mr. Bones' Wild Ride with the other chunk of our holdings though.

Miraculously ahead in all of my positions - most were bought back in 2013 so most are over several hundred %. Even for those purchased last year (except for ABBV) are ahead. I got lucky and won't see because the tax would not be worth it.

    For now.

Well at least the 6 figs I have sitting in a passbook savings account is safe for now.

How much can I get for selling blood plasma?

Glad I kept my parent's $ in CDs. At the time I thought a 18-month 4.25% was crap, but dodged a bullet.

  3. Buying a flowbee to cut my own hair.

Punching extra holes in my belt so I don't have to buy a smaller one.

Going to work barechested so my shirts don't wear out. Shirts from England are expensive.

In all seriousness, probably cooking at home more, downgrade to bourbons instead of Japanese whiskies or Scotch, stop drinking beer altogether. Re-evaluate our vacation plans... right now we go vacation 3 times per year. Figure those average out to $10K per trip. Buy stuff on the used market.

  4. These are the pork soup dumplings (xiao long bao) from Din Tai Fung.

Order Din Tai Fung (University Village) Delivery in Seattle | Menu & Prices | Uber Eats

These are pan fried pork buns (生煎包)

Six freshly cooked Sheng Jian Bao (生煎包, pan-fried pork buns) served with Chinese chilli oil.

There's a place by my work that has really good ones. The ones I bought at the Shihlin night market (10 for $10) were amaze-balls.

I am not free trader by any stretch but tariffs need to be limited and targeted to protect certain industries not just blanket tariffs on everything from certain countries...or the whole world in this case.

Yes. It should be limited protect certain industries.

South Korea put tariffs (stopped imports?) on passenger vehicles while they were propping up Hyundai. Once Hyundai became profitable, they allowed more foreign cars to come into SK.

The US makes plenty of stuff. Just not what people will buy in volume. e.g.

15 million people in the US buying $500 TVs from China = $7,500M   ($7.5 billion)
50 foreign companies buying high precision instruments at $10M = $500M

Similar to tax cuts... the "trickle down effect" is absolutely bullshit.

$100 tax cut to 99% of the population. They'll use the $100 to buy the shit they NEED like groceries.
$1M tax cut to the 1%, they may use it to buy a Porsche or 2, but will never spend as much as the 99%.

He wants to be able to demand bribes to lift the tariffs. He even talked about how he was anticipating phone calls immediately after the speech was over. He’s going to be disappointed when he discovers that everyone else just makes fair trade agreements amongst themselves.

The tariffs are making the US a pariah state even worse than Russia, Iran, North Korea, etc. since their reach and level of impact is only small percentages of what the US can do.

At the risk of my job, expenses and bank account, I hope the rest of the world renegotiate the trade agreements among themselves and leave the US out of these negotiations.

Maybe, just maybe under-educated, hell yeah, 'merica mouth breathers will say "shit, maybe those edumacated people were right all along."  I doubt it, but it's nice to dream.

Oh, saw a graphic last night. Trump is imposing tariffs on European nations, but conveniently not imposing tariffs on Russia.

  7. Not mine, but someone else's wife or girlfriend.

Merging from 1 freeway to another, everyone is trying to "zipper" in and it's usually fairly smooth. Trying to zipper in today with my turn signal on, and the chick behind me speeds up to try to block me. I have a bigger car so she backed off and honked at me. This happens at least once a month. Bitch.

  8. Had my blood drawn last Friday. The nurse told me to rub it so it won’t bruise - which I did, but didn’t work.

I’ve had a dark bruise on my arm which hasn’t gone away… maybe because my platelet count is really low.

  9. And yes, hit up Din Tai Fung for the soup dumplings. They are really good. There are DTF restaurants in SoCal so I’ve had my share. But if you don’t know what a soup dumplings (xiao long bao) are, you need to give them a try. They are very tasty.

  10. I took the family to Taiwan for the kids’ spring break. The weather this time of year is great.

In general, Taiwanese people are friendly and a good portion of them can speak enough English to be helpful. Public transportation is the way to go - the subway system is awesome, the busses not so much, but you can take them to places the subway won’t reach. Get a transit card while you’re there, you can use it for subways, busses, and some stores will take it as a form of payment. Credit cards are generally accepted, but some places only take cash.

Food and groceries are generally CHEAP! We ate like kings for probably 1/3 to 1/2 of what you’d pay in the US. We had combo meals with entree, soup, veggies, etc. for $5. Breakfast for 4 for less than $8.

The architecture is something… some designs are WTF, some have great designs, but ruined by people installing bars on their balconies, different kinds of A/C units, and dirty because they don’t clean the facades.

Some good recs here.  I will add that we enjoyed taking a quick day trip out to Tamsui and just walking around, eating, enjoying the day.

My parents live in Tamsui. I don’t think it’s all that, but I went on a weekday, so maybe not all the vendors / entertainers were out. It’s along the Tamsui river and has a great sunset. It’s the last stop on the red line.

Jiufen that they visited is really cool, little mining village hanging on the side of a mountain. But has gotten so insanely crowded with tourists, esp on weekends.

We went to Shihlin night market for nostalgic reasons. There are hole-in-the-wall restaurants, food stalls and food carts that had tasty street food. Also good shopping with cheap clothing, gifts and other baubles.

We also went Jiufen. It’s similar to the Nishiki Market in Kyoto with a narrow pedestrian street and lots of restaurants, food vendors, shops, etc. Lots of international tourists. If you have time, the ladies can rent traditional Qipao to take photos at the market and some famous tea houses. My wife and daughter rented the dresses to do a mommy daughter photo shoot.

I’d also hit the Taipe XIngyi district. It’s the financial hub with great shopping. The Taipei 101 tower is there. You can go up to the 86th floor coffee / lunch spot as long as you spend 300 NTD per adult which comes to <$10. There is GREAT shopping on the lower levels if you have $$$. Lots of very high end watch, clothing and jewelry stores. There’s also a food court at the bottom level which has great options for not much money.

Enjoy your trip in Taiwan. If you have any questions, I’m sure Sam Lin, YChang and I would be willing to help.

  11. I got mad at my daughter for not contributing around the house, so I gave her the task of loading the dishwasher every night.

She complained about not knowing how to load the dishwasher, at which point I yelled at her saying "Figure it out! Your not stupid! If you still don't know, ask mommy, she'll teach you how to do it!

  14. UN Resolution - International Day of Hope. Non-binding, kinda silly / waste of time vote, but still... here is the vote tally.

In favor: 161 countries, including pariah states like North Korea, Venezuela, Iran, Myanmar...

Absent: India, Paraguay, Peru, and Türkiye

Against: The US of fucking A.

Even the Third Reich would have voted in favor.
