I disagree with the law and the cops but still don’t get caught with weed.

Regardless, this is nothing major and should be a quarter suspension at most.

My stance has been made very public. He needs to be punished

Stupid by Overshown but I was expecting much worse based on those TFB tweets.

Stupid from the cops. It's ridiculous. It's less than 2 oz of weed

  3. Not to be a Debbie downer but here I go. The one thing that bothers me about these highlights is him double clutching the catches. It’s great he catches with his hands, but you’d like to see it be more solid.

could be nothing, but something to keep an eye on.

Such a lazy comment for an industry guy. How many more games and season do you suggest it'll take Card? QE & that OL is what we have, that's what you go with. No one is expecting a title run.

I wasn't saying Card would be better. Even Gundy says it takes 15 games for a QB to settle in. Also I don't know if you've seen Longhorn internet, but people always say "conference championship is possible." I'm saying with the youth on this team 9 wins would be amazing. I'm expecting 7 regular season wins. Sorry to shit in the Kool-Aid. I'd love to be proven wrong.

Next year, though, we're beating Bama in Tuscaloosa.

Ewers can suck for a bit if he has the talent to be great. I have been patient for 12 years now, I can be patient for a few games more while he gets his shit together.

Besides all we need to do is beat UTSA and ULM to start the season.

It's going to take more than a few games for a freshman QB to get his shit together behind an OL comprised of 2 true freshmen (maybe more), a true sophomore, and 2 RS sophomores

In general with anyone doing to their rankings and evaluations, I think the hardest positions for them to rank are OLs and the easiest are QB. I haven't fact-checked it lately, but at one point not long ago, the positions with the lowest star ranking average versus draft picks were C, OG, OT, and DT/Nose in that order. Conversely, QB, CB, and Edge/DE rankings were the more closely tied to draft picks.

I 100% agree with the hardest to rank are OLs. My general rule was I trusted myself more with my own evaluations the further away a player plays from where the ball starts (so like you said C, OG, OT, DT, etc.). WR and DBs always seem much easier evaluations to me when I had to do them. Especially given it is relatively easier to plug in a HS WR/DB into the college level (or they are relatively less work to develop)

I can see why you may say QBs are easiest to evaluate, but I would also argue that given all the mental aspects, the small footwork details, technical aspects of the throw, and mental aspects again, it can be a very hit or miss on evaluations. Also there are multitude of different schools on how to teach and perform at the QB position. However, there is a loooooot of tape on QBs and a lot of people who know all that stuff very well.

    NFHS is a great resource.

I think another thing that can help with evaluations is actually who you know in the business. If you are able to see private work outs and actually shoot the shit with a coach that knows the position better than you, it helps you understand what to look for and how to evaluate talent.

All this to say, I agree with caveats. Good points made.

I'm not going to defend Kwiatkowski and Choate on anything. That said, Texas was plenty serious with Mathis. In the end, Mathis chose Nebraska for 2 reasons. First, he liked how they presented their scheme and he did not like, at all, how Texas presented its scheme. Second, no matter how much Patterson is trying to push Texas to some of his guys now, he spent 2 decades shitting all over Texas as part of his program's identity. Mathis found that whole dynamic as straight up odd. And money wasn't an issue, as Texas offered to post more than Nebraska could ultimately offer.

Perhaps I was being hot-headed adding Mathis in the original post.

Regardless, as @Burt Macklin said, you needed edge guys. You are now in a situation if you have an injury at LB or DE you could be screwed. They play Bama week 2, and I doubt Texas gets out of that game injury free. Texas needed a DE, a Safety, and a LB. Even if it was just a year long rental. Tamper if you need to, but you have to get the guys because nobody is going to want to hear excuses.

  8. The Texas defensive staff seems freaking unable/unwilling of taking advantage of the portal:

You need a safety, but don't really pursue any.

You need a LB. Oh look, an all conference G5 guy. A great piece to sure up a big need in the defense. What do you say? "Nah"

You need an edge. Let's not get serious with Mathis and lose him to Nebraska.

    Who needs a defense?

PK and Choate acting like Gary isn't waiting in the wings to take their jobs.

What's your take on our OL haul so far this year? Who do you see as the potential contributors in 2-3 years? I see a lot of size but are they agile? I remember some of our past OLs with size could not block air to save their lives.

It seems like a lot of developmental pieces that have good size and frames. They certainly have the size, and I can see what they are going for. I like the idea of Cojoe.

But I often hesitate to try an evaluate OL because the closer you get to the ball on offense the harder it is to really nail an eval without knowing the kid very well on/off the field, having a good plan for them, and watching hours of tape. I think Texas fans have learned that first hand with guys like Williams and Cosmi.

These guys could end up like them or Christian Jones (i.e. long term projects that need stability in the coaching position).

What I do like is that they are volume recruiting the position.

Neither Tyler Johnson nor Pat Hudson lived up to their considerable hype. The OL we've had drafted in the past dozen years have been 3 star recruits. Get a bunch of guys who have the frame and intelligence and you'll probably have enough depth to survive a season for once.

To be fair to Patrick Hudson, he was actually very good, but had an unfortunate early end to his career.
