You’re presuming Abreu would make that third year negotiable.  The Astros can’t just insist he sign a contract with their preferred terms.

Abreu appeared to be the best possible signing at the time and pretty much every other available free agent 1B underperformed.

I’m also a little suspicious of the “he was hurt” story.  Sounds too much like “I spoke with Strom and I was tipping pitches” that comes out whoever someone gets lit up.

I get that. I’m saying our offer was attractive enough without going to the 3rd year guaranteed. I personally value the flexibility over guaranteeing that extra year. I’m saying I would’ve walked away over it being guaranteed.

I don’t even think Abreu was a bad deal/ he was hurt.
I bet he’s even value this year which by definition is what you expect with a FA signing.

Slightly disagree. The AAV isn’t egregiously bad, but the 3rd year at his age takes it into a bad deal for me. Think he’ll be relatively neutral this season, but I’m generally more risk averse when it comes to 3 years for older players. At that price I would’ve liked to see some kind of mutual option for year 3. We were coming off a WS win and didn’t need to overpay (meaning the guaranteed 3rd year) to be an attractive destination.

Is the HS punter an EE?  If so I guess that takes some of the worry off of him being untested,  it I really don’t want to see us run into next year with the guy taking his first collegiate snap in Ann Arbor.
    I don’t anticipate punting during game 1.

I fully expect him to be our starting punter from Day 1….and still redshirt. This is Surly after all; we’re nothing if not reasonable with our expectations.

Nobody did. I gave 3 guys (and then threw in Whittington) and said there was a chance one of them gets drafted. Thus, setting the over under at 10.5 instead of 10. Because half numbers make O/U bets more fun.

I know. I threw the one particular player comment in there in an attempt to differentiate from what you were saying. Much like my attempts at improving my short game and my diet, I came up short.

Matt Cassel had a 14 year career as a 7th round pick.

Indeed, he did. When referencing a player to prove a point, you have to pick a player that people actually remember. It’s the same reason recruits are constantly compared to great players coming out of high school when giving comps. Just because Cassel lasted 14 years in the league, it doesn’t change his shitty college career.

Wait, we are actually discussing if Crawford gets drafted? And this is not a joke? I hope people  realize really good college players are undrafted free agents sometimes. Really shitty college players are not getting drafted.

Never underestimate the ego of an NFL personnel guy. Plenty of shitty college players have been drafted. For instance, Matt Cassel was drafted. That said, it isn’t a good idea to bet on it happening with any one particular player.
