I had no issue with Texas until yesterday.  I've made that abundantly clear over the years.

My issue is that whenever someone leaves they say "we had no choice, we had to do it".  Nebraska said this, and it was a lie.  Aggy said this, and it was a lie.  Why would I believe Texas and OU when they say it?  You have a choice.  And it looks like you've made it, and I just hope like hell we make it out alive.

In this case, a good partner would be working with the others to find a win-win resolution on the way out the door.  Not just dropping a bomb out of nowhere.  Working behind the rest of your partner's backs without helping them find a way out isn't being a good partner.

I know you're upset but when did Texas and ISU become partners?

NIL is playing a role already with recruiting, as we expected. Saban straight up made up the shit about Young today. He has no fucking clue what that player stands to make, largely because no one does, and he damned sure hasn’t seen evidence of material deals for the player. People at Bama literally laughed today hearing that shit. But, hey, he’s Nick Saban and he can do what he wants.

As to others, Jamison needs to make some fucking money this fall, because Harris is watching. The math for Evan Stewart has changed. Guys like Worthy need to see legit value or they’ll go somewhere in which they can get it.

Meanwhile, Del Conte is a damned road block trying to protect a fiefdom via compliance fiat.  He’s about to lose on that front, albeit not probably in public.

I still have it this way:

    Texas gets:

    -Campbell

-Anderson (he’s waiting to see something, I guess, or he’d have already gone public. I’m sticking with Texas and for good reason.

-Harris (because his mother ultimately wants him close, not because he picks Texas over Bama)

    -Patton

    -Brown

I guess I’ll call the rest a continued crapshoot and everything ahead of the program for this class is going to be driven by the fall performance. People coming back with the trope that “winning this year won’t matter for this class” aren’t paying attention to the here and now and the dynamics of the past 18 months for both the world and UT football.

What do you mean by the math for Evan Stewart has changed?

Funny how you "know" stuff... that you honestly do not know.   Comparing Michigan and Ohio State to Texas is fucking stupid.  NEITHER has remotely the media scrutiny that Texas does.  And bagmen here simply will not work.

But keep convincing yourself to the contrary.  And switch hands occassionally.... 😉

Bagmen won't work here because "We're Texas"?  The only way bagmen don't work is if those running the operation get sloppy.

I think you're against the bag game because of some "holier than thou" attitude.  Why any fan in 2021 would not only want but encourage the bag game is astounding...

And LSU went down the drain the following year.. I know all kids aren't clean.  But if you think you can fill up Austin with a bunch of dirty kids and not have it get out, you aren't too bright.  I guess I am a dolt, in that I have at least some degree of principles.  But again, the spotlight put on Texas, and the absolute fucking hatred of us by so very, very, very many, would doom the bag man approach here.

Wow. You have drank the kool-aid. You think there would be some conspiracy to bring Texas down if we were thrust into the spotlight? Why hasn’t anyone taken Bama down (i.e. Auburn)? They hate Bama more than anyone and Saban has won 6 national championships since he arrived. If hasn’t happened to them then it won’t happen to us.

Also, the most dominant team in UT history wasn’t made up of choir boys. 2005 was full of gun totin, weed smokin, drunk party boys. Need that edge to win sometimes.

I speak from experience, you speak from?

Comparing an assistant coaches salary to $100-200K illegal payment is simply a huge stretch. And by definition, a coach is NOT a teammate.  I'm just saying the most greedy kids may have talent.  But, more often than not, they are not good team leaders, and not the best teammates.  Also when you start down the bag man route you then have to compete within your own recruiting pool when the kids talk about who got what.  Johnny Manziel made shit tons of money while in college, but was he ever a good teammate?

I safely stand by my original statement.

I speak from results. It’s the difference between Michigan’s roster and Ohio State’s roster. One doesn’t pay and the other does. Michigan wins 9-10 games a year and doesn’t sniff the playoffs. Ohio State wins 11+ games and is always in the hunt for the playoffs.

It is a fact that the teams who drop bags end up winning and being contenders in the CFP. If these bad character bag holders were so terrible then why do they experience so much success in winning as well as NFL draft picks?

You might have experience but it sounds outdated and stale.

Last decade of football should have shown you that winning begets getting top talent.  OU, tOSU, Clemson, Alabama... they aren't out paying everyone, they are beating everyone.

Lol you think those teams aren’t paying players at all?

I already admitted that winning is important. But so is paying players especially when you aren’t winning and need to generate momentum.

Let’s say the schools you mentioned are squeaky clean. Do you think 2021 Texas is on their level? I don’t think so. If we pay some star players then 2023 Texas might be.

OK - let me make one point.  Do you think teams that win national championships are built upon a bag man approach? In general?

From my coaching experience the super talented kid that has his hand out, is very, very rarely a good team member.  They will not sacrifice for the team, because they only see themselves most of the time.  Sucks because these same kids could be truly, truly great, and better players if they could just somehow look past themselves.

Now the flip side of the coin is that as things shake out regarding profiting from player images, who is in a better place that we are to provide income streams LEGALLY to prospective players.  We are the 800 lb Gorilla when it comes to branding and marketing.

I also disagree with those that discount winning in winning recruiting wars.  Then why has tOSU been eating our lunch for years?  Well maybe, just maybe it's those almost regular BCS appearances?  Not saying that dirty money does not influence some kids, but I think winning is a greater aphrodisiac for most recruits.  Oregon is likely doing some shady shit, but are they gonna win a NC anytime in our lifetimes?  Nope.  Not gonna happen.

I hate losing ANY battle for the big uglies at this point, but it's gonna happen.  IF a kid wants to go the bagman route, it's available, without question.  But I honestly question the ability to build NC level teams with those sorts of kids, because of their lack of team commitment.  IF we are beating OU and just winning the Big 12 with some toe dips into the BCS our recruiting improves dramatically.  We are not sucking at recruiting now, despite the hang wringing of so many between their masturbatory porn viewing.  But I think it folly to think that winning is less important than bag men.  Because is simply isn't.  Flame away future carpel tunnel surgery candidates...

This makes zero sense. Winning is important but during the last decade plus in order to have top tier talent you have to pay up.

A recruit getting $100K-$200K to come play for your school doesn’t mean they are going to be a bad teammate. Most head coaches are making $5MM+ a year. Hell we’ve got an assistant that makes $1MM+. Are they also bad teammates?

The idea that players should come here just to get a free education and be a part of a winning program is extremely outdated. If you want to win, you have to pay.

The Recruiting forum after Hutson and Robertson depants Texas tomorrow and choose other schools:

"Worse? How could things get any worse? Take a look around here, Surly. We're at the threshold of hell!"

I can't even imagine the depths of the Clark Griswoldian meltdown the collective here will have. I'd like to think I'll be right there in the thick of it, but I'm going to be playing golf in Galveston with my sons, then getting shitfaced with my wife and her divorced girlfriend spending the long weekend with us. I may miss all kinds of carnage, and that will be a shame.

So in short, I guess I hope we get whitey tomorrow, because I don't want to miss the full meltdown of rock bottom. That needs to be delayed until Banks chooses ATM on July 24th.

I’ll be shocked if Banks doesn’t choose aggy.

(Super K) Evan Stewart | Post Official Visit

      Hide contents

As you know, Texas hosted 2022 5-star WR, Evan Stewart this weekend for an official visit.

Evan was accompanied on the official visit by his mother and father. After the visit, I caught up with his mother and here are some of my initial takeaways.

***After the Texas visit, Evan canceled his USC visit which was scheduled for this week. I initially thought that made a major statement about how things went at Texas but his mother said Evan was just tired from all the travel and wasn’t ready to jump right on a plane the next day (today). Sounds like that will get rescheduled.

***The visit seems to have gone really well but it doesn’t sound like a decision is imminent and I think the family would prefer it that way. They seem content having Evan take his time this time to evaluate things.

***They are taking unofficial visits to Alabama and LSU later this week. She also mentioned that, since they’re easy drives, Evan may stop by TCU and OU this week, as well.

***Since the family still hasn’t taken a ton of visits, the biggest one being Florida, I asked for a comparison between Texas and Florida. He’s been to TAMU, as well, on an unofficial but I just don’t get the sense TAMU is much of a contender.

***The family is originally from Tennessee and both Evan’s mother and father went to school Tennessee (Knoxville) and apparently they both felt that Austin reminded them a lot of Knoxville. There was some kind of familiarity in the vibe that made them comfortable.

***Also, got the sense that while Florida has done a good job building relationships between Evan, the family and the position coach, Texas has really tried to recruit Evan as a staff. Meaning, on the visit they weren’t just talking to coach Coleman, they were talking to Coleman, Sark, other coaches, and various members of the support staff.

***Additionally, while Evan has known coach Coleman for a while, I still think there was a need for additional bonding and I get the sense that connection was made stronger this weekend. It also sounds like Evan really liked the plan Texas laid out for him as far as how he fits in the scheme.

***Sark’s offensive mind is respected by the family and the staff was selling the players on the idea that they are going to bring an air attack with a SEC style run game and physical brand of football.

***I think the new facilities also stood out to Evan and his family. His mother mentioned that while Florida has plans for new facilities, at Texas they actually got to put hard hats on and go in and see the construction and imagine what it’s going to look like. Sounds like it’s going to be spectacular. Shazz Preston’s father actually mentioned the same thing in the conversation we had.

***Again, I get the sense Texas put together a really good visit. It sounds like there was a good balance of comfort, information, fun and personal connection.

***But, this race is quite a ways from being over. Evan still wants to see how the seasons play out and what the game environments are like.

***I did ask if Evan or the family have any reservations about Texas at this point and it didn’t sound like there were any. Although, I will say that in the past, Evan has mentioned that he wants to see how Sark performs this season.

***Again, expect a few unofficial visits to finish out June and then some return visits in the fall before a decision.

Coleman just really sucks at recruiting.

DE/EDGE Ashton Porter, Cy Ranch (Cypress, TX) -2023:

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound four-star has been on the road lately. Stops at Alabama, Clemson, Texas A&M, and Baylor have been on the docket, but he was really waiting for his unofficial to Austin.

“I love Texas," said Porter. "The culture was amazing. I love how the campus looks. I sat down with coach (Pete) Kwiatkowski and he told me how I would fit in the scheme.“

Texas sees him as an EDGE (X or Jack) in PK's scheme, and Porter sees it as a wonderful opportunity. After tallying 32 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, and two forced fumbles in 2020, his versatility really blossomed in his sophomore campaign.

Any visits or camps lined up through June?

“No sir, I don’t have anything else coming up," Porter said. "But I’ll make a game at Texas in the fall.”

DE Derrick Leblanc, Osceola (Kissimmee, FL) - 2023:

This feels like a courtesy stop. At 6-foot-4, 265 pounds, Leblanc is one of the most highly-sought recruits in the nation.

With 41 offers in tow including Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, and Florida, he tells IT that the Buckeyes, Crimson Tide, Bulldogs, and Trojans are pursuing him the hardest.

This dude can ball - 65 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, and forced fumble in 2020. And Leblanc knows what he needs in a college program.

“Education, the environment, high graduation rate, depth chart, and the little things," Leblanc said.

Texas offered earlier in the year, and Leblanc was eager to see the University of Texas. If he returns in any capacity, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

DB Jamel Johnson, Seguin (Arlington, TX) - 2023:

One of the top in-state defensive backs for the class of 2023, Johnson recently tripped to the ATX to get a look at the Longhorns.

At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Johnson might project to safety at the next level, but his impact in the secondary doesn't go unnoticed.

Inside Texas: How’d the visit go?

Jamel Johnson: “Nice. I loved it. Great atmosphere. Great coaches. Great players. Great recruits.”

IT: What all did you see on the visit?

JJ: “I took pictures, talked to the head coach and the defensive coordinator, the safety coach, and the corner coach. It was all good talks.”

IT: How has the recruiting process been for you so far?

    JJ: “Good. I’m loving it.”

IT: What about Texas stood out today?

JJ: “The atmosphere. The culture. The players that are here. They’ve got good vibes.”

IT: Was this your first visit, or what are some places you have seen?

JJ: “I’ve seen TCU and SMU.”

IT: How is it just to be able to go to college campuses again?

JJ: “Good. It gets me used to it to see what it’s like and see what I love about it.”

IT: Where are some of your other visit plans?

JJ: “Alabama, Texas A&M, OU, USC, and LSU.”

IT: Where does Texas stand in your recruitment?

JJ: “Home state, so they’re sticking out pretty good. I love it a lot.”

IT: Is staying close to home something you’ll consider heavily?

    JJ: “Yes sir.”

IT: What were the coaches’ message to you today about how they want to use you on defense?

JJ: “The scheme, me playing safety, me playing corner. I’m versatile.”

IT: What was like talking with Pete Kwiatkowski?

JJ: “Good. He said I fit good into his defense. Sometime they run seven-man DB, so you’re going to play here if you like that.”

    IT: And Blake Gideon?

JJ: “Coach Gideon is a great guy. He’s active and you can tell he cares about the kids.”

Lolwut. Beyond what's on this current page, are you interested in college football as a sport like at all?

Urban Meyer’s list of indiscretions is endless. Tom Osborne had Lawrence Phillips. Just curious what else was going on with Osborne outside of Phillips.
