Yeah, they showed a stat that said Texas got 2 points from the bench.
I'm looking at the box score right now. 5 rebounds, 1 assist (Askew with the nifty sidearm toss inside to Allen under the bucket), 3 personal fouls. Oh, and about two dozen tie ups by Brock.
It's funny after all the talk about how deep this team is. I'm interested to see the minutes played.
It's interesting to see how different the dynamic is now sans Mitchell.
As @shadow_operativehas said many times depth is drastically overrated at this time of the year. It comes down to your 6 or 7 best players.
Some guys are still getting too many minutes. Mainly Febres.
Texas went on that run in the 2nd half with their 5 best players (i.e. the starters).

Not counting on it. That's part of why this win tonight was so important. For me it's more likely this team loses its last 3 games than it is they win two of the 3. Beat West Virginia in Morgantown, and then roll the dice against Baylor and Kansas.
The defense in the post is severely undermanned. Baylor has a short bench, too, because of injuries, but it's a much more athletic roster, with better shooters.
People are overthinking size in the post. Beard has always played small. Tonight the game changed against TCU when Bishop was able to start hedging on the perimeter and switch. Beard would much rather have athleticism than size at the 5. I bet this is the underlying issue with Mitchell and why his minutes were starting to decline.
IMO, the interior problems against a team like Tech had more to do with the back court. Tech's wings and guards are too athletic/big for our guys (especially on the boards).
I thought for a stretch there our best lineup was when we went big with Allen/Mitchell/Bishop but I think this lineup is what Beard wants with Bishop at the 5.

What is curious is his USG is the same between UMass and Texas. Both at 26.3%, but he's averaging 10 less points and 6 less shots. It's likely that Texas was going to him, but he's not able to physically dominate the Big 12 like he was the A10. Even his Per 40 isn't that far off, in shots per game just he's not hitting the same percentages, and he's shooting nearly 50% less FTs per game. Sounds like his dad got into his head, without knowing the correct facts.
This news isn't shocking to me. Mitchell had only played over 20 minutes in 1 of the last 5 games.
Mitchell is too slow on the defensive end and IMO Bishop has been the best player for about a month. I would prefer Mitchell stick things out but Bishop needs to be a 30 minute a night guy at the 5 right now.

Assuming Texas stays in the top 25 by my count there are only 3 coaches that have finished in the top 25 of Kenpom the last 5 seasons.
Chris Beard, Mark Few and Kelvin Sampson.
I looked at that quickly but think it's right.

I guess Tech's pitch to keep her home will be something something Sheryl Swoopes 1993 national championship. Also just learned Sheryl Swoopes is now 50 years old and I feel ancient
Somebody is going to get an insane talent. Chavez is special.

Something also funny to me about recruiting is the top national recruit in the '25 class is probably from Lubbock.
You don't see that often.

I don't know who Texas is targeting in the '23 class but I hope we're recruiting Gisella Maul from Cedar Park.
She's unreal.

5 seed in Bracket Matrix. The top 5 seed.
Based on our current resume, the average tournament seed per T-Rank is 3.8.
I think we're definitely a 4 seed right now.

I thought by now it would be the Gaston and Moore show down low but the senior Ebo is still dominating the post minutes. Moore and Hunter have been way slower to develop than I thought they would, both were injured early but should have had plenty of time to get going, but that doesn't appear to be happening. You can see Vic try to work them in, but the games right now are so important he goes back to the experienced players quickly.
I originally thought Shay Holle was a “nice” player but now she looks to be a very important piece going forward, far more skilled than I thought. You can see her confidence growing each game and moving into the starting lineup and getting on the Vic weekly show can only help.
I honestly thought we'd be lucky to have Warren 60% of the games but she has been in every contest. She seems to be playing a bit less reckless and maybe the collar is helping as well.
We are starting to peak at the right time, some players are getting better and it looks like Vic has this team figured out now. Love us getting back on D, that was a real problem and good for 4 to 8 points a game. We have 5 very doable games to get rolling leading into the post season. If we keep above the #16 mark that should get us into the second weekend which would be my goal for this squad.
As long as we are not playing f’ing Baylor I feel really good about this team.
Holle's career path is about what I expect with most FR under Schaefer. Harmon is an anomaly with Schaefer.
Young players don't know how to play defense in his system which is why they don't get on the court. As we've seen with Holle, just learn how to play in his system and you can be a good player.

Ebo, Warren, Holle and Rori have had great games
Holle in the starting 5 has solved our biggest problem. Texas was getting off to terrible starts because Warren, Gaston and Ebo together is way too slow of a starting 5 to run a full court press. Schaefer kept trying to press with that group and it doesn't work with those 3 together.
Texas should never play Warren with 2 bigs. Either play 1 big with Warren at the 4 or 2 bigs with Holle. Warren is a good half court defender but she's not very athletic so if you play her with 2 bigs it makes it nearly impossible to run Schaefer's full court press.
Holle, JAT, Harmon is a very disruptive backcourt defensively and all 3 are athletic which fits perfectly with the full court press. Holle's insertion into the starting 5 allows Schaefer to actually run his system.

I went to check out how Aston's year 1 is going at UTSA. Yikes.
-
This team reminds me a lot of the Tennessee team in men's basketball.
When those athletic guards (JAT, Harmon and Holle) disrupt the point of attack Texas is really difficult to beat. Similar to what Tennessee does with their guards and hedging everything on the perimeter.
Iowa State essentially said fuck it in the 2nd half and let Joens bring the ball up the court because our guards were so disruptive.
-
Warren and Gaston did a great job on Joens tonight.
I really was really impressed with Gaston's effort in the first half. I didn't think she had the mobility to guard somebody like Joens.

We match up perfectly with Iowa State. They don't know how to handle Schaefer's physical style of play.
-
Texas should always run the score up in games like this because it matters with NET.

-
Texas really needed that win in Lubbock. You could tell these young players hit a wall.
Either way, we're going to get a very high seed based on NET and all these quality wins.

Iowa State doesn't have the athleticism to stay in front of Harmon. She can take anyone off the dribble.
Keep attacking.
-
It was definitely a teaching moment but KSU is also pretty good. If they didn't have Covid issues early in the year they would probably be in good shape to make the NCAA tournament.
I would take their back court in a heart beat over ours in Smith, Pack and McGuirl. If they just had a competent big they would be very good.

ISU going 6-12 in the Big 12 with the 2nd most Q1 wins in the country would be fascinating to see what happens.
I’m positive 7-11 gets ISU in but not sure about 6-12.

This team has:

This team is:
•19-7 (8-5, 15-1 at home)

•well coached
•designed to win in the tourney
we've got a top 10, possibly top 5 coach nationally, with a bona fide top 5 staff of assistants, and a top 10 recruiting class incoming. just wait until Beard gets a roster full of his own guys. we are in unbelievably great shape moving forward, co soldering what was left when our previous coach left.
Yeah, especially defensively.
I think this is the floor defensively and it's a top 10 defense.
-
I think Hamm could probably help Texas this year but all in all none of the guys that transferred are spectacular.
The player I do wish would have returned is Coleman. If Texas had a legit guard off the bounce this would be a substantially better team. Probably even top 5 good. IMO Coleman was a very good college guard that just wasn't utilized correctly.

crazier is he's shooting 39% from 3. I know its a level down from Big 12 but wow.
True but not shocking. Most FR can't hit anything in college.
Granted, Shaka probably should have told him to stop jacking 3s but that's why Shaka is gone.

Beard will have that type defense here soon at Texas. It's actually kind of remarkable Texas has a top 10 defense with the lack of athleticism this team has. I've had plenty of questions about Beard's offensive approach but that dude can absolutely coach defense.
Once Beard starts getting Zeigler and Chandler type athletes into the system Beard is going to have top 5 defenses here on a yearly basis.

I hope Mitchell sticks things out but Bishop also needs to be a 30 minute a night guy. He's been very good the last month or so.
Bishop is now 2nd in ORTG, 2nd OR, 1st DR, 2nd BLK%, 2nd TS, 3rd PRPG!, and 2nd in FTR. Unfortunately, I think that's part of the issue with Mitchell. When Bishop is playing this well at the 5 minutes are going to be limited.
For a team that struggles to score they need somebody that can grab offensive boards and get to the free throw line. Bishop is the best on the team at both of those things.
