  1. It's interesting to me that on a long enough time line, the diminishment of Russia could be a disadvantage to the West because it empowers China, and China under their current system of government is a bigger threat over the long term than Russia is. At the same time in the near term Russia has made a full scale invasion of a neighboring European country, and so this makes me laugh. China is going to take complete advantage of Russia's situation. No doubt about it. That's what I was telling a bunch of people a couple of days ago who simply watch the news and were pseudo fearful of China and Russia "getting together." There's no getting together here. There's China preparing Russia for butt sex with no lube, and not even a reach around.
  2. Yes. I'll see if I can find some. There are polls for pretty much every European countries, and a lot of non western ones as well. Paris has a lot of domestic politics that are playing a bigger role than Ukraine right now. Edit: Here's an article about the presidential race, although not specifically about French support for Ukraine specifically. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/28/france-election-2022-macron-heads-polls-but-ukraine-overshadows-the-debate.html
  3. Back at you. I'm very appreciative of everyone contributing to this thread. Too many to name, I'll just forget someone. I enjoy reading everyone's thoughts on the conflict. And about their brother's thoughts, too!
  4. Or any night for the past 6 years. He had all the power in that relationship, other than pussy is undefeated, which is admittedly a big exception to make. Still, while I understand her actions contributed to the situation, I blame this entire ordeal on Chris Beard. Not saying she didn't contribute, but it was his choices that ultimately led to his dismissal. Not her's.
  5. I think it's fairer to say he was a complicated person. But he was absolutely fraudulent. He's the Bob Wheeler of this war. He definitely put himself out there as something he was not, and he definitely stole money.
  6. This article is so heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. It's about a couple of combat medics deployed at a stabilization center in a dingy basement just a few clicks away from the front lines. Well worth a read: https://kyivindependent.com/national/i-work-then-i-cry-exhausted-medics-near-bakhmut-fight-for-every-life
  7. Here's a salient tweet from the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs about why it's important not to allow Russian athletes to compete in the Paris Olympics even under a neutral flag:
  8. Could add India to that list, too. Modi had all the makings of a ruler for life from the beginning, and at this point he's cementing it.
  9. Jerritt Elliot is being inducted into the USA volleyball Hall of Fame. https://usavolleyball.org/story/usa-volleyball-announces-2023-hall-of-fame-inductees/ "Texas women’s volleyball coach Jerritt Elliott will receive the All-Time Great Coach Award, which recognizes individuals for success and excellence in volleyball coaching over a period of many years. Elliott has coached several successful National Team Development Program (NTDP) age-group teams for USA Volleyball while leading Texas to two NCAA Championships and multiple other titles."
  10. I don't have anything against Barnes. I like him a great deal as a human being. I'm still glad he's struggling with tournament success. I'm just petty that way. I know a Sweet 16 is pretty good, but even then, losing to FAU is not going to feel good for Vol fans. Now if Chris Beard can channel his inner Gillispie in the next few years, that would be awesome.
  11. Apparently he could be a candidate for Terry’s staff. We’ll have to see.
  12. And of course, with a rotation comes looting. Russians gonna russian. They Rush In, and then they rush out.
  13. To be honest, I think there are a lot of head coaches at all levels who could check some boxes on the psychopathy checklist. I know there are a lot of CEOs. When winning is the primary measurement, it's going to attract people somewhere on the psychopathy spectrum. I've always said that life/work balance is overrated in a head coach of a team I root for. I just don't know of any coaching legends who are famed for their life/work balance.
  14. That's my thing. Texas has always hired their coaches after the season is over. Including interim coaches. You have to negotiate a contract. It doesn't make sense to do that until after the season is over. It's a bunch of noise for the sake of making noise.
  15. He's not a realistic person. That's not his strength. He's not introspective. He's not truthful, frankly. He's an optimist who thinks by sheer will he can transform a situation. There are pros and cons to this. But if he can keep his personal demons at bay, it makes him an extremely compelling basketball coach. I saw recently where Dana Altman criticized the Oregon fan base for only having 3500 fans in the seats for their NIT loss. Which is what you see coaches do all the time. I remember when Mack Brown criticized the Texas fan base for not being passionate enough to fill up DKR-Memorial. That is pretty much never effective. Compare that to Beard who constantly talks about how amazing the fans are, whether he's at Texas Tech, Texas, or Seminole Junior College. That's not realistic, especially at the beginning. But that's how you motivate people. He talks about being a Monday night program. He talks about every one of his players being a future pro. He talks about every opponent being an NCAA team. That's what he does. Being realistic is simply not part of his DNA. I don't understand why it should even be an expectation.
  16. Ukrainian troops training for assault and defending a building using laser tag:
  17. That was the story of that series. Nebraska snatching defeat from the jaws of victory over and over again. The '96 inaugural championship game, "maybe we'll beat them by 21 points!" Roll left. Breaking their long home winning streak in '98 with Ricky Williams. The last time Nebraska fans ever gave a Longhorn a standing ovation. The '99 game in Austin where they fumbled the ball inside the red zone over and over. The 2002 game that broke another home winning streak with a couple of missed field goals and throwing an interception from the Texas 13 yard line with 10 seconds to play rather than kick the field goal to tie it. 2006 where Nebraska had the game wrapped up gaining a first down until Aaron Ross caused the fumble which allowed Texas to drive down for Ryan Bailey's game winning kick. Jamaal Charles going absolutely apeshit in the fourth quarter in 2007. Nebraska went 1-9 in Big 12 play against UT, many of those years at a time when they were the top football program in the country. Add to that Nebraska felt like Texas just came in and took over. The SWC commissioner was named the new Big 12 commissioner. The league offices were moved from Kansas City to Dallas. The league held a championship game over Nebraska's objections. The league banned partial qualifiers. There was a lingering bitterness towards Texas from fans that weren't even around from stories passed down from older generations. It's basically a meme at this point.
  18. Russian generals say they just haven't run enough vehicles through those minefields yet. They're going to be cleared out in no time.
  19. It's been one of the key pieces of video in the ICC hearings. Listening to the husband talk about how he got back to Ukraine held territory was very moving.
  20. Russ Springmann is the new coach at Oral Roberts. It's been a winding journey for that guy. He's very straight laced and religious, so Oral Roberts is a good fit for him in that regard. He was my favorite assistant at Texas. We don't get Durant without Springmann on staff. He was the first person to offer Durant a college scholarship and he stayed on him for the next four years. Durant doesn't even visit Texas without Springmann. I hope he has great success. https://ktul.com/news/local/oral-roberts-announces-russell-springmann-as-new-mens-basketball-head-coach
  21. Well, also Shrewsberry attended a Catholic high school in Indianapolis and then later was the head coach at the University of Indiana at South Bend from 2005-7. Notre Dame was probably his dream job.
  22. That's because we're not in the SEC yet. Those Florida fans will learn. Nebraskans have a hate for Texas that goes well beyond CWS, btw. We don't see it in football much any more because both programs have struggled with relevancy, but in volleyball you see it all the time.
  23. Some of it is being dumb. But some of it is just human nature. There's a certain segment who wants to be supportive of the status quo, whatever the status quo is. It's not so much that they're sheeple. It's more they want to cheer, not to boo. They feel like part of the role of being a fan is to be optimistic about what might occur, and to see positives in what is going on. And frankly, we need people like that to function as a society. Get too many and it's not good. But get too many people who constantly want to burn things down and it's not good, either. And remember, on any forum the people who post are heavily outnumbered by the people who simply read. That includes surly. So the ones who are posting are generally the most motivated to have their view expressed, which means people who are strongly against whatever is going on, along with people who are strongly supportive. But none of that is important. The most important thing is that you were very right and get to say I told you so as often and as repeatedly as you care to. And I'm here to be supportive of you in that endeavor. Fuck that guy. So happy he's at Marquette now. So happy I get to watch him perform breathing exercises at the under 4 minute timeout for someone else.
  24. Zoe Fleck was featured on the podcast Coffee with Berez and Z, featuring Kentucky volleyball players Maddie Berezowitz and Azhani Tealer. The conversation turns to Texas around the 25:30 mark. She confirms on there the reason she transferred from UCLA was a lack of scholarships for her 5th year, otherwise it's likely she would never have come to Texas
  25. I completely underestimated how limited Disu would be. I will say I'm not sure Beard utilizes Disu as well as he's being used right now. Maybe he does, but I give a lot of credit to the current staff - Terry included - that Disu has played such a significant role lately. Reminds me a lot more of Barnes than it does Beard.
