Neyor talk on visiting Texas begins on this page on VolNation

It’s nice to see the other fanbase is already accepting that Neyor is gone while we are busy rationalizing that this just a “for fun” visit and not getting hopes up. The stoppable force meets the moveable object.

I would add:
Super Bowl 50: Denver
49 New England
48 Seattle
47 Baltimore
46 New York Giants
Clearly a dominant WR is not key here...
Those are good points. My only caveat is that you have to go back 6+ years and the current game places a much higher emphasis on passing.

Super Bowl LIII Patriots - but they had Brady
Super Bowl LII Eagles
I think we would have to disagree that Hill, Edelman (or Gronk), and healthy Alshon/Ertz aren’t elite. I am moving the goalposts with the tight ends though.

I don’t fault him for trading Hopkins. You don’t necessarily need elite WRs to win in the NFL. I fault him for trading him for a broke down RB with a worse contract.
I know you’re not defending him, but what was the last NFL team to win it all without an elite wide receiver? I can’t think of one.
BoB failed twice with the Hopkins trade: first because he traded a player for a personal reason because the player did not respect his coaching style and quality (which was justified on Hopkins’s part) and second was trading that player, who was also your best player, for meager returns.
Hubris and incompetence.

It means that he's got one very public data point of not getting his shit together and doing what's best for the team and his participation on it.

Great points. This really shouldn’t be an argument.

He was a dickhead who sucked at his job, but at least he did recruiting things, unlike Coleman.
Sometimes doing things (JSN, Garret Wilson, Elijah Higgins vs Bru) is worse than not doing things.
Wait, why are we doing this to ourselves? Don’t play this game.

Gerry asked a couple of college coaches about where three Texas targets will end up:
Mario - both picked USC
Mathis - Only one knew anything about this situation and he picked Texas
Sanders - One picked Arkansas the other picked 'Arkansas or Texas'. Both agreed that all three of Texas, Arkansas, OU were in this recruitment.
On their recent video, Nahlin seemed more bullish than Bobby on the chances of getting Sanders. But that could be the likely orange tinted glasses of whatever source he is relying on.
I keep forgetting how much of a presence Arkansas has in the DFW area. Weird how that has become a thing.

You have Bama connection(s). Were there any open secrets about Sanders in the program? Was he a malcontent? Homesick?
Seems like an awkward time to talk to any Alabama fans.

Would welcome thoughts on the lesser known places on this list. But wanted to throw out that Kerlin’s is my favorite spot in Austin, and criminally underrated. Brisket is right up there with Franklin’s and L&L, and the kolaches they serve on Sundays are at the level where they can convert kolache skeptics. Highly recommend.

Neyor to Tennessee, Reed to SoCar, neither even visited, I see we're back to the full Brendan Harris Experience with the recruiting department.
It’s weird to see commitments without even visiting. One would think the kids would at least check out the campus first.
Or maybe they just needed to spend the Walter Nolan funds before it got returned to the LPs.

Thank you for sharing, this is a good datapoint if we’re back on the carousel in 4 years. As others have said, it isn’t necessary for a successful coach to be an expert at all facets of the game if there are resources to support those weaknesses.
There’s a ton of reasons to be optimistic about the direction of the program—finally bringing in a top QB, having a quality OL coach, stellar recent position coach hires — but frankly the Patterson hire makes me much more optimistic about the program because it indicates that the powers that be aren’t going to defer to a “trust the corches they forgot more than you ever know etc.” mindset. Defense and program logistics are a weak point, so push to bring in an established but still sweaty expert to consult and provide oversight. It looks like we’ve finally passed the phase of giving Charlie Strong and Tom Herman carte blanche to run a program like a gm without proving it first.
All this positivity can (rightfully) be shot down with “5-7 and Kansas,” and our infrastructure still lags behind those of the other top programs, but there’s definitely enough progress to think the next few years won’t be a waste.

How has no one mentioned that Whataburger is open 24 hours? The honey butter chicken biscuit is the undisputed king of the 12am-3am time slot, which is really the only time I can justify eating fast food to myself.

it is a bit premature to write off a true freshman in a room with coaches that displayed questionable personnel decisions and deference to seniority.

So we understand the scale, is the ability to not overthrow open receivers downfield or to throw screen passes that arrive promptly considered elite? Or merely above average?

Watching the 4-6 poorly shot plays from this video, Neyor will Cleary improve UT’s WR talent level.

The OL improved as the year went along. I know we aren't used to seeing that type of stuff at Texas so it's probably a shock to many people's eyes. Flood is a damn good coach and I expect the unit to be solid next year.
The OL played good enough to win in probably 4 or 5 of the 7 losses.
QB play and the defense let this team down way more than the OL.
To my untrained eye, I agree that the line seemed to improve over the course of the season.
Additionally, there were a lot of variables at play beyond Flood’s coaching that affected the unit’s performance. In the beginning of the year, we had QB uncertainty and did not scheme to the unit’s strengths (I.e., insisting on running inside zone compared to outside zone). When we finally began to adapt the scheme to some success, we suffered from OL injuries, qb regression, defensive lapses and motivational problems.
Combined with the glowing assessments of Flood from current players and his industry reputation, there are reasons to be optimistic.

Supposedly, shareholders at lsu would never hire Lafayette’s coach because they look down at the school
This seems appropriately on brand. ULL has roofs that don’t leak and libraries that are structurally sound. This they aren’t committed enough to winning.

Majors is too light to qualify as “entrenched.” More like an ensconced starter.

Mike at Night: The latest buzz on staff movement and recruiting
Mike Roach
— It's definitely something I'm still checking into, but I get the vibe there are still some signs of life with Texas and four-star Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco offensive lineman Earnest Greene. My pick is still on Georgia to land the west coast offensive lineman, but Texas remains alive in the race and a big part of that is their ability for Greene to play tackle in the offense. We will be down in San Antonio two weeks from now when Greene makes his decision at the All-American Bowl and we will be able to get a better idea while we're around him there.
I know Mike has an article quota, but didn’t Greene already sign during the early period and delay only his announcement? Meaning that the coaches literally cannot talk to him if he signed with Georgia. If Texas isn’t communicating with Greene, there’s nothing “alive” in this recruitment. This isn’t a Schrödinger’s cat situation.

So youre buddy's opinion is that the bag game is never going to be minimized and it will always be the large determining factor in things? Well ok?
Your point is spot on. There was a lot of cognitive dissonance. Hand waving aside the possibility that a recruit might take the money and bolt with “Well that’s just not how things are done in the game.” Placing your faith in uncles and a “gentleman’s agreement” when we’re moving to an era with free transfers and indirect recruiting of your roster seems like sticking your head in the sand.

I had drinks last night with an Ole Miss alum that participates in the bag game and that conversation left me thinking that programs still aren’t prepared for the potential chaos of the transfer portal.
None of the stuff he said will be new or groundbreaking to anyone here: high school players and people around them receive benefits to sign and enroll at a school. But what struck me as interesting was the front loaded structure of the benefits and the weak incentives to remain at the school.
There are some benefits that persist throughout the players’ time at a school — employment/housing for relatives, cars where title remains with the booster, bills/planned payments to relatives. But most of the cash bonuses are paid upon signing or when the recruit enrolls (ignoring payments made during the recruiting process). Players get paid during the season but that is true for all schools; there aren’t really any incentives unique to a program to keep a player from leaving to another program.
Maybe other schools are smarter about how they structure under-the-table incentives. But with the new portal and NIL rules, it seems incredibly risky to make the bag game the future foundation of your recruiting infrastructure.
