Golden might not have started out the guy, but it came apparent he was the guy by mid-season. I dont think the WR are bad but Texas may not have a WR that is a top 10 WR in the conference.
-
Texas does not have an obvious #1 WR. There is no Golden or Worthy on the roster. There isnt even a Mitchell on the roster currently. Hopefully, someone steps up and becomes that guy.
-
Mosley is probably the best right now and he is the least athletic of the bunch, but this is WR group is a step below last couple years. Lot of solid, but nobody that is an obvious #1 WR

Kelvin Banks.

OL was not bad last year. This is just wrong. Little banged up late at Tackle, but you cannot compare last year's OL to this years. Pass blocking is just another level. Sark has moved to a progression quick passing game and Manning is very good at that. We have seen a lot less of the immediate pressure the last 5 quarters, but they are no where near as good as the OL last year (Baker is really trending up, I dont think people are giving him credit). Its the reason people are coming out saying Arch now looks like what they expected.

I fully expect to see 12 personnel vs Georgia, just to mess with everybody.
-
It's Kentucky. They killed Texas underneath all game and held on to the ball. Kentucky hasnt been that efficient all year outside of piling up passing stats in a blow vs Tenn. I did not say the secondary is worse or even at the same level as the 2023 group. I just said it closer to teh 2023 group, than the 2024 group. Basically, this defense is probably not elite this year. Still damn good, but I think you can attack the secondary. Probably later in games as the pass rush tires
-
Texas was healthy vs Florida and Kentucky. Both hurt Texas with the pass. The implosion vs Vandy was likely due to injury (coaches and players are still culpable here), but I think there we are seeing signs this defense is closer to the 2023 defense than the 2024 defense. Both were good vs the run. 2023 defense was not great vs the pass. 2024 defense was legit at every level. The one big positive for this defense vs the 2023 is the pass rush. That will mitigate some of the issues.

Looked like some type of Cover 2 (Tampa 2). Technically, that is not Guilbeau's man. I believe it was Williams' man (though I didnt go back and look who was at safety). That said Guilbeau should carry the WR, if nobody shows up in his zone (nobody did). This also goes to football IQ. It is bad not to carry a WR in the 1Q, but its kind of WTF when you dont do it in the 4Q with a 10 pt lead with under 4 minutes to go. Who cares if you give up a catch in the flat in that situation.
-
You are going full Ian Boyd. The move to more 11 personnel helped out the offense (been talked about since probably week 1 by many). The change on the OL helped in the Vandy game. Its not an either/or situation
-
Lot more 11 personnel and I think MSU DL got a bit tired. Did you not do like a 10 clips of this?
-
Safety and LB were huge reasons the poor pass defense. Pavia threw 47% of his passes between the hashes and those represented 59% of his completions and 56% of his yards. Guilbeau and Littleton have been frequent targets of opposing offenses. Littleton gets break being a true frosh and in probably the most demanding secondary position. I dont think Vanderbilt is built to really test the CBs.

Akina is a great teacher of technique. He great a tthe micro level. He is bit out of his element on the macro level (see DC results).

Muhammed? I thought Guilbeau was taken out.. Either way I dont think that is an excuse for the complete breakdown. I dont expect them to be as good as the starters, but that kind of drop in production is just ridiculous. You cannot bust coverages like that. One thing of note is the LBs are not particularly good in coverage either, so this is more of a back 7 thing. The real frustrating part of this was the lack of football IQ. Texas busted coverages on Vandy's #1 guy, Eli Stowers. Not sure how you do film study and not note where he is on passing situations.
-
I dont argue that is probably true, especially when Taaffe and McDonald were out. That said it is the coaches' job to make sure the 2 deep is prepared to play. No matter who is in they should not be busting cover 2 coverages to give Vandy's only legit threat a ~70 TD.
