More like, the better the D-line the harder the sledding has been for them. Tells you what the problem is.

QBs were rattled in those 3 games. I am not saying the OL is not a problem, but at this point of their careers the QBs need favorable circumstances to perform at a high level. When things get off, you see some ugly throws and self-sacking.

I know they're completely different players and there's an obvious talent gap but ... Matt Corrall.  If anyone was able to watch Sat's game, Corrall saved his teams ass with similar issues along the line.  The second the play broke down - which was quite often - he either paralleled the line to buy some time or absolutely sprinted upfield.  This was something I saw Thompson do very well in the spring game 2 years ago.  It seems as if, even when we do try to move CT around or run him, it's so slow, it's ineffective.

This is where I am. Texas has played 7 games this year. Qb performance was ugly in 3 games (Ark, TCU, and OSU). When the QBs are asked to be distributors, they have success. When they are asked to create offense, it has been ugly.

Would you say players are a bit coddled? Maybe the culture draws a certain personality type?

In general, of course. There are always exceptions.

Listened to some of Sark's comments. I get the impression he is surprised at at how soft and fragile the team is. I was a little surprised he actually said the word fragile. This seems like something every new coach at Texas comes in and says. I remember it from Herman and Strong also.

This has been discussed but message board posters always know best. I’m pretty sure it’s been said that he left Bama because they were trying to make him a slot receiver.

That seems to be a consistent issue at Texas. Players knowing better than coaches. Texas has Rojo, but not many others willing to make the sacrifices to win more games. (Overshown, but that took at least a year too long).

  5. Normally I think reaching back to the past is generally a shitty idea, but I kind of like this one. It’s not because I think Muschamp is better than PK, but I get the idea the staff is lacking an asshole on it. Muschamp would bring that hard ass, Meathead attitude this team is seriously lacking

I do think talent is an issue, with the edge being far and away the number one spot. That’s PK’s position. Go look at the guys they’re recruiting for that spot this cycle and the guys he had starring at Washington. They don’t look like anyone on this roster. It’s a legitimate issue and was predictable before this season. It doesn’t excuse the performance across the board but it does put a real ceiling on the unit.

This scheme would look a lot better with better play from the front six. You can at least appreciate what they’re trying to do and I’m willing to watch it play out. I just find it gates to believe we’re going to see a quick fix there given that improvement is needed across the board and two of the more productive guys in Jones and Overshown will be gone. You can’t count on the portal for a total overhaul. But a quick fix is exactly what’s needed because you can’t roll out a defense anything like this in Bijan’s last year and then going into the SEC.

I think his scheme would look a lot better if the front 6 or the back 5 played better. Hard to scheme when you are afraid to leave DBs on an island and are worried your front will get run over.

So why do you think PK has his worst defense ever here at Texas? He was salty at his prior stops. I am just trying to find an explanation and believe me I don't want it to be the head coach is not allowing a great DC to do his job by interfering because that means we are stuck in this pattern. A man does not go from top 10 most the time to 62 just because he switched jobs. He has switched before and got better not worse. People that perform well and then start to perform poorly in my experience are either micro managed by someone new, join dysfunctional teams, have new personal issues or are not given the resources to continue to perform as they have in the past.

Just my opinion. I think he has some serious talent issues. Edges are a disaster (DE/OLB). LB is not good, watch the winning TD and the LBs as an example. Safety is slow and can not tackle. Based on where he is playing the safeties and the fact he has gone predominantly 2 deep, I dont think he trusts the CBs either. Outside of that everything is good.  I also think he has some strange personnel decisions that are making it worse. Basically, this is not a good defense if he pressed all the right buttons. It is a wretched one, as he has made mistakes also.

  8. Not to enflame the mob, but I thought this was a very interesting comment from Ojomo.

    From Hookem.com

Sounds like a huge dig at the coaching:

"We had some injuries and we’re undersized a little bit at a specific position at defensive end," Ojomo said. "They started running counter. That’s their bread and butter, and even after the game, I said it was counter, counter, counter, counter."

This is best look of that play at the 2:51:30 mark, overhead from behind.... watch Thorton "seal" the edge....

That is the play I was commenting on. This is great angle to see Overshown displaying really bad LB play and why the defense struggles vs the run. He is the most talented player and shows 0 awareness of the blocking keys in front of him. I have hard time believing that in 2 games of prepping for OU, the coaches did not talk about the blocking keys on the counter play. His eyes never look at the OL and miss the guard pulling, because of that he takes multiple false steps and takes himself out of the play. That isnt to excuse the rest of the bad play

This is a great play that shows the weakness of Overshown and LBs in general. His eyes are locked in the backfield and he is not reading the triangle. He completely misses the guard pulling. I can not imagine that has not been drilled multiple times to Overshown. That is OU's bread and butter play for years.

On the game winning play for OU, what's the thinking behind having such an unbalanced defensive front? Looks like we have Sweat over the center and our edge guy outside of the tackle. The gap(s) between I guess are covered by Brockermeyer?  Seems like a bad plan given our personnel limitations. Also, seems to begging OU to run a counter right into this - which is exactly what they love to do and in fact did: easy to block down the out-leveraged lineman and outnumber us at the point of attack.  It seems like a more balanced traditional look would have helped us here.

    Rights?  Hahaha.

I love Scip and find that he's usually right at least insofar as seeing what's what on the football field and generally allocating responsibility. He ain't perfect, nobody is.  The S&C thing may be one of those areas where he's hyper-picky, or maybe flat wrong.

completely agree. He is very solid in his breakdowns. I just think he gets a bit overboard in the S&C stuff.

Yeah. It sucks. Pretty much everyone who pays close attention to football thought PK was a joke run hire, and he’s been horrible. I do wonder if forcing him to accept guys like Bo David and Terry Jospeh instead of selecting his own coaches is a big part of the problem, but it goes beyond that.

we have personnel deficiencies but nowhere near this bad. This level of ineptitude is on the coaches. We have Terrible personnel usage. Guys like Bush and Broughton are playing way too much.

Our DL is more talented than it’s showing. Not sure how much of the blame should be apportioned to PK’s scheme vs. Davis’s coaching, but the DL is playing way too high and passive. I know in general PK wants them to hold up blockers to let LBs and Safeties make plays, which should result in less negative plays, but more containment, but it’s obviously not doing that. At this point, he’s gotta change it up and try to let the DL make more plays. They won’t be near as good as our DL last year, but you have to think it would be better. We haven’t had that many coverage busts, but our DBs never find the ball or make a play. That’s been consistent for years now, but I hoped it would improve under this staff, especially since PK has guys play more deep zone, so they’re in way better position to find the ball and make a play, but they still don’t. Those two deep balls we gave up were absolutely terrible plays by the indivisible DBs, but it’s too widespread to just be on the players. Pretty much every DB has been making those kind of mistakes all year.

Ultimately, this level of pathetic defense has to be on the coaching. If we were 40th or 50th in the country in defense, you could start asking how much is on the players instead of the coaches, but there’s no legitimate argument that we don’t have the talent to be significantly better than we currently are on defense.

His base defense is pretty much a 4-3 and operates the same. Switching to a stricter 4-3 wouldn’t do much. He also doesn’t run many crazy schemes. That 4 DL thing was one off, and it worked. I could maybe see putting Collins at DE as an improvement in the run game, but they did try that over the summer and decided it didn’t work. Maybe if they made him more fo a true DE it could pan out. Hard to say. There’s not many 305 lb DEs playing in college or the NFL.

The main problem is he’s asking our DL to hold up blocks instead of Crete negative plays on our own. Our DL sucks at doing that and our LBs and DL suck at making plays. Even with huge personnel losses form last year, I think the guys on our DL showed they’re much better at creating negative plays. Hopefully we shift to a more aggressive DL ans try to out more pressure on the QB because trying to keep everything in front of us clearly isn’t going to work this year.

I would just add that the DL is working to to funnel the ball to LBs and Safeties, which is a major problem. They are funneling ball carries to poor tackling units.

Didn’t BJ foster threaten to quit the team in last year’s opener because Ash didn’t want to play him? How much worse is Adimora?

This is leads me to complaint #72 about the defense. Too many older guys that are underperforming. If the defense is going to be bad, can we at least get a youth movement

We'd still have issues.. the front 4, any mix you can think of, isn't going to generate a rush. We have 2 ILBs that area already struggling who's going to be the 3rd?  Ovie? Thornton?

not sure it is possible with Jones injury, but here are some thoughts. I do this mostly, because I need to believe there is a chance the defense can get better.

#1. Get bigger on the edges. I would not mind opening up Collins, Ojomo, Sweat, and Jones across the LOS. Want to see more Murphy and Sorrell coming off the bench

#2. I hate do this, but I would move Cook to FS. Look at Adimora, Barron, or Crawford at the Star (NB). Current safeties have no feel for the passing game and are not good tacklers. I think Cook would help on both accounts.

#3.. LB- I have no ideas.

Am I panicking? Probably, but I think major changes need to be made. This is the unadjusted stats

    Texas 106th in Total Defense
    115th in yards per play
    110th in rush yards allowed
118th in rush yards per attempt
    85th in pass yards allowed
86th in pass yards per attempt

Its Scip being Scip. Rights a whole piece about how the PK needs to rethink his approach, because he does not have the piece to run the defense in his preferred manner and than adds in that he would have had them doing more squats to mix everything. I dont give shit how many squat Jett Bush does, he is isnt winning lined up on an inside shoulder of a OT.

I hear where you’re coming from. However there is a difference between an average/forgettable S&C coach and guy that’s fixated on gimmicks. The former will still get strong fast guys out on the field (maybe not the healthiest) the latter produces weak guys that get whooped on the field. I’m not saying I’m 100% buying into what Scipio has to say. But I have heard some very concerning things about Becton’s approach during the off-season. Like many things, there is a healthy balance. You need the traditional strength training (squats, cleans, single-leg) to build up a solid baseline. The functional/flexibility training is great as a supplement for the skill guys. It should never be the main feature. You will not build strength and power with that alone. The most concerning aspect of his program is that he’s using a cookie cutter approach and having all position groups use the same program. IF TRUE, that is absolutely ridiculous. That could a big part of why we’ll look so weak in the trenches and why our performance drops off late in games. Would a track and field S&C coach flavor the sprinters, distance guys, and throwers the same program? Fuck no. I was on lower tier D1 track team (I was a scrub), and we all had different programs. It’s just basic shit. I’m concerned with Becton’s approach, and based on everything I’ve heard it sounds like a gimmick.

That would be a huge red flag and basically bizzaro Yancy.

Scipio works out a lot and thinks he may have the right formula for S&C.  Made an entire pod about it back in August.  Guess he is no fan for Becton

Scip would complain about any S&C coach. He maybe right, I  dont know. Becton is not an innovator, but given his history I dont think he is necessarily a negative. The term JAG comes  to mind. The real issue is the defense is bad. The edges are held up by the likes of Jett Bush, when simple physics will tell you he isnt going to win many match-ups. The defense is set up to funnel plays to the LBs and Safeties, when neither are very good or tackle particularly well. Those are much bigger issues right now, than asking how many squats Texas did this year.

I was just about to post about moving JT Sanders to defense full time.. even if he goes back to TE next season.  He's getting so few snaps on offense.  We need ANYONE with pass rushing athleticism as a potential option on defense.

I have no idea how much he can add as a pass rush specialist at this point, but I am willing to give anything a shot at this point. That said the pass defense terrible, but the run defense is what needs to be fixed first. I dont think Sanders will give much in that department. PK needs to rethink what he is doing. I would like him to move away from his 2-4-5 defense and just make it a 4-2-5 by bringing in some bigger bodies on the edges. Right now the narrow asses are getting pushed around on the run and cant get around OTs in the pass rush, so you are not losing anything by beefing up the personnel on the LOS.

For some reason Alfred Collins and Coburn seem to have regressed.  Is it the scheme?

Lost Taquon and Ossai. Both went to the NFL. I believe Taquon was top 3 in run defense at DT in the Big12 according to PFF. Replace Ossai with Bush and Thorton. Ojomo replaced TQ. Replacements haven’t played anywhere near Ossai or TQ levels.

  22. Sanders was a 5 star based on his upside on defense. Could he add to the pass rush? Sure. Hell, he maybe the best rusher. That is a pretty low bar though. The issue is he would probably just add to the issues vs the run. The real problem is he doesn’t want to play defense, so I am not sure he will have the focus to help on defense. This is an Overshown problem part 2.

This season has me curious if PK was the primary play caller at Washington or was it the guy they promoted to HC

It could also be the coaches don’t work well together. Sark went out and hired a defensive staff before he hired a DC. That was a curious move at the time and it’s possible that is also playing a part

There was a play when Rattler was still in where Collins was lined up as a 7 tech and literally threw the OU tackle aside like a rag doll and then wrapped up the QB.  Then for most of the second half we see Jett Bush in there.  Barryn Sorrell played 1 series during that time. Why?   I don’t understand some of the personnel decisions.

This one strikes a nerve. The play on the edges is just bad. Make things worse most of it is by players that aren’t coming back. I don’t won’t to watch below Big 12 player football out of a position, but if I have to watch shitty play can it at least be a young player with upside? At least build for the future.
