Our coaching exacerbates this problem. Jett Bush doesn't really have to play at all, and especially not at 4i and other positions that have him getting mauled by guys who outweigh him by 90 pounds. We even moved him inside to 3 technique on some passing downs today. We also don't need to substitute so much that our 3rd string plays meaningful snaps on multiple possessions.
You could make a decent (albeit not great, but also not giving up 350 yards rushing bad, either) front out of something like this:
SDE - Collins
DT - Ojomo/Murphy
Nose - Sweat
WDE - Sorrell/Ovie/Thornton
WLB - Overshown
MLB - Ford/Gbenda
It still wouldn't have difference makers, but at least we wouldn't be playing guys who don't even belong. And put more guys in the box for the love of everything holy. We play with 5 in the box sometimes on downs that aren't even obvious passing downs and while the offense has TEs on the field and we're getting gashed on the ground. Taking away the deep ball isn't happening anyway with our pass coverage, so we could at least commit appropriate numbers to stop the run and try to generate a pass rush from the line of scrimmage without Orlando DB blitzes.
I was watching the game and thinking PK needs to adjust. He just doesn’t have the players to run his system at the moment. Quite frankly, he doesn’t have a single unit he can rely on. Stopping the run has been a major issue. I was thinking Pk needs to go a little Elko.. Run a big front 4 and at least attempt to stop the run. It’s isn’t perfect, but you can’t play defense if you can’t stop the run. I would not mind seeing
Jones, Ojomo, Sweat, and Collins on the LOS. It’s 3 DTs and Jones, so the pass rush won’t be great, but it should at least help the run. You have to try to take something away from the offense

I will let the physics majors discuss the particulars but this article disagrees:
"Due to the gyroscopic effects of a spinning football, the way the ball behaves in the air actually varies based on whether the quarterback is right or left-handed. A ball thrown by a right-handed quarterback will curve slightly to the right, and one thrown by a left-handed quarterback would do just the opposite. Understanding this is essential to throwing an accurate pass."
https://interestingengineering.com/the-math-behind-throwing-the-perfect-football-spiral
Regardless, he three 3 straight long balls all floating right and made no adjustment. He is not ready for prime time.
he isnt ready because he panicked. He is the more talented passer and that is pretty obvious. I would have argued for Card during TCU game if Ark was a disaster and he threw 3 picks, which Casey tried to do vs TCU. Instead he essentially froze. From my experience it is easier to get an aggressive player to hold a punch, than to get a passive player to throw a punch.

Card may have the arm, but in the pig game he threw 3 straight long ball passes without making any correction for ball spin. Even the announcers were like WFT, does he not know the ball is spinning and you have to adjust it? Multiple throws floating off to the right with absolutely no adjustment. Anyone talking about Card ready for anything other than clipboard duty is regarded.
If I recall. Off to the right to Whitt in the endzone. Whitt could have made a better play of the ball, but not a good throw. Terrible pass over the middle to Whitt (?).. The pass to Worthy down the sideline was more on a suspect route, than ball placement. That was the announcer doubling down on his spin comment.

those guys should try a little harder to not hide their VERY CLEAR (financially-related) feelings on QB
Card was 8/15 for 61 yards vs Arky - a 18.4 QBR and 4.1 YPA
Thompson was 12/22 for 142 yards vs TCU - a 54.7 QBR and 6.5 YPA
i know people don't love QBR and it is far from perfect but no one in their right mind can look at those two games and say "yeah, the Texas QBs played better vs Arkansas than TCU"
I hate QBR in this situation, because it misses a lot of factors. Card in Fayettenam with no running attack is a horrific situation for a young QB, especially with Ark moving the ball up and down the field. Casey had the lead and Bijan was carrying the offense. The level of difficulty is not close. That said Card spit the bit and panicked, that is the one thing you cant do. You really cant say Casey was worse, even if TCU LBs didnt drop those passes. Another thing that QBR doesnt include, poor decisions that luckily end up with the ball rolling on the ground.

That's a bit chicken and egg, no?
We likely had a 200 yard rusher bc Casey wasn't reading their defense well.
That would mean the nearly 3 picks is directly responsible for the rushing total, rather than being a stat you'd be surprised to find paired with the total.
I'm sure Sark is extremely happy with Bijan's output, but no way in hell did he want to wear him down that much the week before OU. He did what he had to do to win given how Casey was performing against good schemes by Patterson.
The point was Texas was running the ball well and TCU was loading the box and the passing game still struggled. I get the picks if the offense was on Casey, but that was not the case here. That is not a good performance.

Yup. Casey was bad, but he didn't turn into a puddle either. Card has the arm, but hasn't shown much ability to actually do anything with it in a tough game.
too be fair neither QB has shown the ability to play at a high level in a tough game. Hell, Casey almost threw 3 picks in a game with a 200 yard rusher, I am not sure I have ever seen that. Hopefully it was a learning lesson, but I just dont think Texas has a high level option at QB. I still think Texas can win 9

(Scipio Tex) 2021 Texas-TCU Postmortem: Offense
This is what gives me hope that things are changing. TCU crowds the box and Casey is struggling, Sark says “fuck it, Got Bijan”. How many times have we seen Herman smash his head against a brick wall? Nice to see a coach adjust and actually call plays that are counter to his beliefs, because he feels that is the best way to win. It wasn’t pretty, but I have seen so many play callers that can’t do that. (Remember Charlie having 5 in box vs Kingsbury?)

Not sure why people keep thinking Karic is some magical cure. He got beat early and often yesterday.
I think DK needs to stay at RT and insert someone else at LG. Karic and Jones would get eaten alive by OU's pass rush. We need at least one tackle who can protect
Conner makes a lot of sense, but given the communication problems do you want to put a freshman next to Jones? Not to mention next game is RRS and you can be sure Grinch will be moving DL/LBs around

Damn at least he could have tried to block down like everyone else. The LG didn’t touch a soul either. That’s embarrassing. That’s the biggest issue. Texas lost that play before the snap. I am not going to say that Jones is great, when asked to block one on one, but that is lack of communication. That can’t happen. It sucks to watch OL get beat, but it’s next level frustrating to watch OL get beat on pure stupidity and that wasn’t a particularly crafty scheme

I'll be honest I'm not sure who you're referencing?
Flood was the OL coach under Schiano and the best run in Rutgers history. He was elevated to assistant Head Coach and eventually HC at Rutgers

Would be nice to hire an OL coach that has a proven success with lower ranked guys and making them a good unit and player development. Bama is still continuing their dominance in the trenches without Flood...
You mean like hiring a guy that put together good OLs at Rutgers and parlayed that into a HC job?

If Jones was worried about the DB blitz he needs to call that out to Okafor so Okafor can slide over. He clearly never did that. Not only does he suck at blocking, but he also doesn’t get the mental side of things.
This.. watching the OL there are so many times that there are simple communication breakdowns. OG/OT both don’t touch a rusher. 1 simple call fixes that, it might not be the perfect call, but at least you get a hat on a hat. Too many times there has been unblocked rushers when OL has numbers

this defense is absolutely going to drive me to drink (more). fuck i hate playing bad defense.
and with our front four, we really shouldn't be that bad.
The front 4 is DTs and pieces from the island of misfit toys (the edge). I love the the Inside Texas description of the ILBs as finesse, which means cant shed blocks or read keys, but if kept clean they can run. When you step back and take look at the defense, there isn’t a lot of difference makers out there. PK would give his left nut to get Oassi back

I am too lazy to dig up the what happened towards the end of his recruitment. If you want to claim that he wasn't pursued by OU at the end, then you can have it but that's not what I remember.
in the end, it doesnt matter. Though my story would be much more fun to tell after a W in Dallas. Feel free to add Riley offered him as a Safety, if you want

You are right. People thought it wasn't committable since Cam Rising was committed to them. Once Rising flipped, OU started pushing for him. Herman did an amazing job of keeping both committed to us.
my memory maybe off, but I dont think Riley ever pushed for him. I thought it was widely expected, but never happened. Why I think Casey will be pretty amped, because my read was that he was never really recruited by OU

After we flipped Cameron Rising from OU, they offered Casey IIRC.
OU offered Casey in May of 2016.

Did ou offer Casey a scholarship?
Yes.. they offered early. They signed Cameron Rising instead. Texas flipped Rising and the world thought Casey would go to OU, but OU never circled back around for Casey and signed Tanner Mordeci. He was offered, but I do not think he was ever really recruited by OU

Mallet and Bledsoe are solid comps. I was going to throw out Jeff George….given that 2/3 went first overall, I’d probably have to lean toward Sydney’s Mallet comp being the most likely outcome.
I'll throw 2 Steeler QBs... Big Ben and Leftwich (played 1 year there)

Tech stats are kind of misleading.
If K. Robinson doesn't have his foot and face over the line, Texas at least prevents the TD on that drive and gets the ball back on a punt or better.
Tech's drives from the beginning of the game would have gone:
Punt
Punt (ifs and buts)
Interception
Downs
TD
End of Half
Interception
Punt
Not a bad start, really.
For the season opposing QBs are completing 74.4% of their throws at 8 yards per attempt (it hasnt exactly been Heisman Qbs either)
Take sacks out and the its 132 carries for 735 yards or 5.6 per rush.
That is 4 games of data.

Talent is a problem. I thought in the spring we should move Crawford and another CB to safety, because our current safety group is not athletic enough (save Owens, who seems like he will never play anyway). LB starts a walk-on. Both edge rusher positions are JAGish with under the radar freshman Sorrell being the only guy out of like 6 dudes we play there who even looks like he has the right body type. CBs should be good in theory, but get beat deep a lot whether from busted assignments or otherwise.
The big plays and not stopping the run better are both disappointing, though, even with the roster deficiencies. Our DBs are veterans, so busting so many assignments is bad even with the 3rd scheme in 3 years. Our interior DL has good talent and should be getting wins more consistently. Even Rice and ULaLa ran on us.
this what I was saying awhile ago. Its game 4 and what does the defense do well? What position group do you have confidence in? We can talk X's and O's, but right now I have little faith in the Joes. I would love to help PK scheme, but if you are not good at 1 thing its hard to scheme, because how do you help the front to stop the run when you backend needs help?

Still hard to get much of a read on this defense in my opinion. They've been pretty good when games are still in question, but bad later when the games are out of hand. Is that fatigue? Is it losing focus/intensity bc the game is over? Or is it just a coincidence and they're really somewhere in between? Idk.
Ex: Yesterday the score was 35-7 until a long ball with 3:30 left in the first half. In the 3rd quarter, both TDs came on ~70 yard passes while we were up 35 pts. Both of those may have been due to loss of focus/intensity. One more TD in the 4th with backups in the game. So if the game is close and the players stay focused, do we give up 35 points? Who knows, may have been more like 14 or 21.
One thing for sure - TCU will be a tough test for our run D in particular
The issue is you would feel good about it if Tech was moving the ball throwing underneath. They were grabbing chunk yards in the passing game vs the starters. Scary, because Tech was the first team with a reasonable passing game. I have watched the defense through 4 games and I can’t tell you what they do well…. Maybe red zone defense
Hey PK -- What would you say you do here?

Rather have kept Ossai and Taquon than Ash. 2 of the best defenders and nobody has come close to replacing them
