  1. in the 1960s 5 MLB were picked in the top 5 of the NFL draft. Going off memory, but I think the last ILB to go top 5 in the draft was Marvin Jones in 1993 (might have missed someone). Nobis was still great, but its clear the position was valued much greater in that era. I dont think anyone would argue that. I guess there is one. DraftHistory.com
  2. That is the NFL's take on positional value. I have no issues with Nobis. You are the only one making it an either/or thing between Nobis and Hampton but that is par for the course
  3. NFL just became a passing league. Defenses preferring to run more 2 high, it may be swinging back. Either way the difference between 1970s and 2020 is night and day.
  4. Bruce was OLB/DE guy in a terrible draft. ILBs are an afterthought now, unless they add some blitzing/pass rush component. Positional value there has been diminished alongside of RB. The game has just changed
  5. That is probably a good thing. Most star HS TEs are just glorified WRs. Staff is probably seeing a kid with the athleticism to play TE at the D1 level and the physicality to develop as an in-line blocker based on defensive tape. The latter seems to be hard part when finding a TEs. I believe Andrew Beck was a similar situation (thought he played more ILB in HS, but that was a long time ago).
  6. I think that is just where the eyes go. Easy to see the contributions of QBs and RBs. I didnt see Nobis, but that was a time when MLB was a premium position (3 yards and a cloud of dust was the preferred offense). Nobody has mentioned Casey Hampton. The guy had 119 tackles (78 solo), 3.5 sacks, 18 TFLs, and 22 QB pressure in 2000. Just to put that 2000 season in context, DJ had 130 tackles and 73 solo in his final year at Texas. In 1999 Hampton had 101 tackles (50 solo), 3 sacks, 21 TFLs, and 24 QB pressures. That is just insane from a NT. Its hard to argue any Longhorn has ever played their position to higher standard than that, but that isnt a position that gets a lot of hype. I do not think we will ever see a DT record 100 tackles ever again, let alone do it twice.
  7. The training, the techniques, and the game itself has changed so much. You can only judge a player’s greatness by how he dominated his peers. Not even sure Earl would be a RB at Texas today. That doesn’t make him any less of a legend though
  8. Liked your list. I would keep it the same just replace Layne with Street. Ricky, Earl, and VY are locks.
  9. At no point did I say Earl wasnt a great player.
  10. Bobby Layne should be the 2nd QB. 3 time all-swc and 2x All-American. College and NFL HOF
  11. Earl owes a lot of his success to Akina and the CB depth at Texas at the time. Rare a guy with his athleticism would play Safety and not CB, especially 15+ years ago.
  12. The issue with this list is Texas football has a very long and rich history. We tend to have a bias to modern players. You have a player like Hub Bechtol that is a 3x All-American. Nobody on here would mention him (maybe @Armybrat). There have only been 2 Longhorns to ever be a 3x AA, Russel Erxleben is the other. It is kind of good to use AA and awards to winnow the list down and bring up names that certainly belong in the discussion, even if we have not seen them. You dont have to be strict on it, but its better than the "player X was more awesomer" argument.
  13. Thorpe is an award for a position/group. Its not a standard that would knock Vince out. Vince has Davey OBrien, Maxwell, and Manning Awards. I am sure there is someone that you could argue on the positional award criteria, but it is a solid jumping off pt for picking the greatest Longhorns ever.
  14. I didnt put them on there. I thought Gray, Vasher, and Johnson had to be on the list. Picking #4 is a bitch.
  15. I think Vasher is on. He is one of three 2x All-Americans. VY is also in the College HOF, so he is obviously on. The point is DB is arguably the most competitive position if you are doing a MT Rushmore for Texas. To be on the DB list you pretty much need 2 All-Amreican caliber seasons or an absolutely elite season.
  16. There have been 18 DBs that were 1st team All-Americans. That is the first cut. 2 time All-Americans: Vasher, Gray, and Johnnie Johnson. 3 Thorpe award winners (Huff, Ross, Barron), since it started being awarded in 1986. Feels like to be in the discussion you have to at least be a 1x All-American and have a Thorpe (if after 86). Gray and Johnson are in the College HOF, so they need to be on any Texas DB list. If you pick 4 to be on the Mount Rushmore, you are going to be leaving some serious bad asses off the list.
  17. LSU team I would argue.. Offense was great. The skill players were insane. The OL was pretty mediocre. The defense wasn’t a powerhouse. We saw that in DKR.. I don’t think they are legit comp to a team like Miami 01. Think there is some recency bias and skill position bias to that one
  18. I get it, but it is more about getting there in time than needing a big ass. I anticipate LB being one of the strongest positions on the team. It's to the pt that I am wondering how much we see Moore playing off-ball LB (outside of specialty packages). (Sark was very complimentary of Lefau and Spence during Spring ball. Since its the off-season I am going to assume that is 100% accurate and not just coach speak)
  19. I think Ant Hill is being underrated here. I am betting this is the year that he puts it all together and becomes a complete LB. He is already one of the better hitters and playmakers in CFB. I will bet year 3 you see him make a big step in ability to read his keys and diagnose plays.
  20. That’s funny. I was going type something similar. It does make me laugh when it works. Texas runs it so much, how are teams not prepared.
  21. I caught part of it, maybe I missed that. I saw him mention that scouts were saying maybe Ewers isnt as good as we thought when he was coming out as a recruit. Basically implying a 5 star doesn’t mean he is going to be one of the best QBs int he nation. To me that is just playing the odds. It’s usually a good bet to say the new starter isn’t going to be a HOF QB or #1 pick. Not like he said he thinks Arch is going to suck. He just said he isn’t buying the hype. That’s fine, it’s up to Arch to prove him wrong.
  22. that railroad play has produced TDs every year. Blue had a few this year. Felt like Bijan would get one every couple games. it has consistently produced big plays for Sark.
  23. Tuberville- yes I saw Murray and McElroy said pretty much the same thing. McElroy left him off his top 10 QB list. He said there just isnt enough tape to put him on a top 10 list. It is a reasonable position. I think Arch will be great, but he does not have a lot of experience. No issues with anyone saying he hasnt earned a top 10 ranking or a 1st pick projection until he puts it on tape.
  24. Love the picture for the irony of having the "Lite" by T'Vondre's helmet
