I don't really disagree with any of this. I like all three in a vacuum, and Magpie the most, but if these are the best three we land, it feels more like a holding serve with OU, TCU, and Okie St defensive line class than a compete with Bama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Clemson class. Hopefully they all have an Ojomo type of dominant senior season. Maybe early wins on the field will help us finish out the class with one or two superior DL, but that remains to be seen. Bama is in on about ten guys as good as or better than Leal, to put the competition in perspective. Elite DL recruiting is the most competitive in college football, and you need a ringer there if you want to compete in the playoffs with the affore mentioned teams in the playoff rather than be an Oklahoma or Washington and get the ball run down your ass once you get there.

DL seems to be the position where you really have to land the elite guys. There's just not many people on the planet with the requisite size and athleticism to be dominant DL. I agree that our current class can keep us ahead of pretty much all of our in-conference competition, except for OU.  OU had a dominant DL class last year.  Riley has picked up their recruiting, and while it's still not on par with teams like tOSU, Bama, and UGA, 2018 and 2019 are looking to be better than anything Stoops did in a long time.  We'll need to pick up our DL recruiting to not be at a talent disadvantage with them moving forward.

Plus Caldwell never visited last week.

The staff seems to only have one more CB spot open. If things are really heating up with Carter, I wouldn't be surprised if we slow play Caldwell. I like Caldwell well enough, but he's very replaceable.

  3. Regarding Cine's coverage skills, here's a good video. He gets beat a decent amount here, but he wont' be lining up outside against 5 star WRs in college. Notice his feet and how effortlessly he flips his hips. He'd be a better CB prospect than Bobby Wolfe can ever hope to be.

He might as well already be an LSU verbal. Let's see what happens when Coach O stokes the flames on the dumpster fire by having a bad year on the field with an upset loss or two a la Troy and a couple blowouts while generally looking like a mess at every aspect of the game Aranda doesn't control, loses some assistants after the year including Aranda, and then gets to come back for another year anyways because LSU can't afford a new coach.

Some filling out the class discussion with what we know right now. First, the positions that will almost certainly be filled, and later positions we may or may not take depending on who we can land. Players are listed more or less in order of likelihood of landing, or likely preference on the big board, but not necessarily predicted to be in this class.

    QB: Roschon
    RB: Cain, Major, Glass
    WR: Whittington
    WR: Smith
    WR: Wright
    WR: Higgins
    TE: Liebrock
    TE: Wiley
    OL: Johnson
    OL: Shepherd
    OL: TBD- probably another tackle
OL: TBD- probably a swing guy who is most likely a guard with good length but can play tackle in a pinch
OL: TBD- a stud center we can groom for the future
    DB: Watson
    DB: Catalon
    DB: Adimora
    DB: Cine
    DB: Caldwell
    LB: Floyd
LB: Gbenda, TBD. Not sure what's going on with Gbenda. Orlando appears to be looking everywhere for more linebackers. I have Tongue in a different group, because you shouldn't count on him contributing at LB anytime soon.
B-backer: Davis. Not sure who the backup play is here, and maybe we'd just punt the position if we miss on him
    DL: Sweat
    DL: Mpagi
    DL: Carter
DL: TBD. Leal and Jermaine Johnson appear to be top options, but both will be tough pulls. There are about a dozen fungible in-state options who could blow up, so we can probably afford to wait here and see who materializes in-state while fishing out of state

That's 25 spots, or maybe 24 if we miss on b-backer. The following fit into the class if we can land them in no particular order as best available players, we can probably go up to 28 or 29

    DB: Carter, Stingley, Pola-Gates, Richardson

RB: TBD. We know the staff is looking for a second RB per quotes from Noah Cain, but is it more of an APB/slot type ala Sqwirl Williams, or is it a 2nd every down back who is primarily an outside runner like Toenail (King Doerue?)

WR: Wilson, Lewis, Powell, Ellis, Anderson, TQ Jackson, OOS, late bloomer. Keep working on Wilson to see if landing his buddy Higgins, better play on the field, and proximity can change his mind, while seeing which of the third tier guys blows up, seeing of any OOS studs reciprocate interest, and looking under rocks for a late bloomer like Tev Hunt.

DL: If a stud wants on board, we can certainly fit a fifth DL into the class

ATH: McCoy, Tongue. If Bru is listening, you keep a spot open for him until he shuts down his recruitment, although he's unlikely. You take Tongue as a long term option at Rover with him starting out at WR, but that needs to be in addition to another Rover you can hopefully count on earlier.

Good stuff.  Unsurprisingly, this is a very comprehensive and thorough list.  The only name I'd add is Zach Williams as a target at DL.  Things have been quiet with him.  We offered him early and he visited in April. After the visit, we were considered his leader but he's gotten a lot of offers taken some OVs since then. Looks like he's OV'd to Louisville, Oregon State, and TCU.  I like that he's using up his OVs before some of the big programs come after him hard. Hopefully one of those two remaining OVs is for us. Looks like he visited TCU on 6/15 and liked it. Maybe @angelos's frog knows something about him.  Looks like the highlight of the trip was Mrs. P's tour of the Fort Worth Zoo. lulz. (https://247sports.com/college/tcu/Article/Four-star-defensive-end-Zach-Williams-recaps-his-official-visit-to-TCU-119127913/ ).  The article says he could be deciding soon.  If we get Williams, he'd immediately be my favorite DL prospect by a good bit. He's got a high upside similar to Mpagi but he's about two years ahead on the development curve.

Neonmoon got me thinking more about the DL recruiting (so you can blame him) and the more I think about it, the more underwhelmed I am.  Sweat, Mpagi, and Carter are probably all takes but they seem like they should all be the last guy in a 4 man DL class. Mpagi has a high ceiling and could become a high NFL pick but someone with that much development needed always represents a higher bust rate because you can't just assume that the development is a given. I've liked Carter for a while, but he doesn't have a very high ceiling. He seems to have a small frame. He's 6'3, 260 with some not great weight and I'm not sure if he'll be able to add enough good weight to be a real force inside and I don't think he has the explosiveness for weakside DE. He could probably man the SDE spot, but that's also what Sweat is, so a little redundant and neither guy projects to be a game changer right now.

Elite teams aren't taking classes like this, just look at the 2018 DL recruiting of the schools that made it to the CFP or any program that is routinely an elite program, like tOSU.  I get that we need to get to 8, 9, 10 wins before worrying about the playoffs, but these are the guys who will be making up our DL in 4 years, not the next two.  Anyways, there's still time, and landing Zach Williams and/or a late bloomer who shows up after senior film plus a big fish (like Leal, Hawaiian, or Johnson) would do a ton to change this class, and I'll happily eat crow if we can pull that off but it's not seeming likely. Maybe this staff can continuously identify and develop guys like TCU does year in and year out, but that's not a sustainable model for 99% of college programs and while Giles did well coaching up our guys last year, assuming he can accomplish this yearly is quite a jump.

Tl;dr DL recruiting still not great and I'm sure people don't want to hear it, but at least I'm not talking about Giles' recruiting or the 2018 DL class.

I want to see senior tape on Gbenda before I put him in the take category.

I wonder if Cine could be a stealth option at Rover?

Overshown needs to be ready to go in 2019.

Same on Gbenda.  Regarding Cine, I'm not sure he has the kind of frame.  I think he'll be like Deshon Elliott, but with better coverage skills. In two years, I see him being a 6'2 200+ lb guy who can play centerfield, drop in the box for run support or go man up the slot.  Cine has really good coverage skills for a S his size.  The idea of him coming in a year after we got Foster, Sterns and Overshown is insane.

Our options at Rover for 2019 will be Overshown and an EE De'Gabriel Floyd. Overshown coming at 215 is huge and I hope we dont' waste much time playing him at regular S. He needs to be training at the Jason Hall spot or just flat out as a Rover right away.

Should we be disappointed that Cine is pushing back his decision? We went from going last on his only 2 OVs before his decision, to now potentially getting stale while other schools get the last word. Probably worse for Pedo State than us, as we are close enough to get him in for several home games, but now he gets Haitian food on 3 more OVs.

No. PSU is still leading. The longer he gets established in Texas and stays uncommitted, the better for us. He can drive to our campus a hell of a lot more times than he can fly to PSU over the next 8 months.  It's the same type of thing that's working against us in the Rian Davis recruitment.

i wouldn't take porter higher than 7th or 8th.  i might end up regretting passing on him, but there are just too many red flags to take him earlier than that.  you really need to hit on a top 5 pick.

My problem with Porter is he’s not ever shown to be anything besides a scorer. Not great on defense, not a great rebounder or passer. He’s reallly going to need to develop other aspects of his game to become a great player and his ability to do that is a complete unknown.  That combined with the injury stuff makes him very risky, IMO.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Doncic needs the ball in his hands and needs to be initiating the offense. He is a witch at running the pick and roll. His range is too good for people to go under the pick so they are going to have to switch which will create a mismatch either for him or the screen setter. I wouldn't worry about him too much on defense. He's got decent size, very good intelligence and plays with good effort. He's never going to have elite athleticism but he can get much stronger.

Defenses nowadays can switch guys onto him that can all stay in front of him. He can still be effective with his passing and step backs, but whether or not he learns moves to reliably get penetration (like I have with Your Mom) will determine if he becomes the type of player OP talked about.

I think he’ll figure it out and I’d take him #1 overall,  but I can see a scenario where he can’t figure that stuff out and it limits his effectiveness.

Not according to him. said he was feeling great, woke up, warmed up, did a light workout and decided "his hips felt a little tight", so he canceled his workout and "took a couple days off". dude wants to drop.

So wait, why are we just automatically believeing him when he says his cancelled workout is no big deal? Wouldn’t it make more sense that his hip was seriously messed up to the point he couldn’t workout, but he tells people it’s no big deal so he doesn’t drop? If porter wants to drop or control where he’s taken, he just limits who gets to see his entire medical records. He doesn’t need to play games with workouts in order to select where he goes; he actually has a more accurate tool to accomplish that.

It can be a bit hard to tell how good an offensive lineman is in a camp setting without pads. That being said, this young man appears to suck ass at football, which might be an impediment going forward as a football player.

Where would you like me to send my $9.95?

i still don't get how doncic isn't the overwhelming top prospect in the draft.  he's a 19 year old kid dominating against grown men in the 2nd best basketball league on the planet.

I like Doncic a lot and think he'll be really good. But I have some definite reservations about him ever being able to be the #1 option on an offense.

While Euroleague is better overall than college, there's no arguing there's a lot less athleticisim on the floor than college.  There's potential for long, athletic wings to give him a lot of trouble. He' struggled some in Euro play when a long wing with NBA athleticism guards him. Now, he could develop and overcome that or always struggle against those types of defenders and need to be more of a second option. Either way, I have trouble seeing his floor as anything lower than a productive NBA player with a long career.  I will say that he'll be a bit of a liability on defensive switches on smaller guys, so his offense needs to be really good to make up for that because he'll absolutely get picked on some on defense.

I think he would be a good get. He is due for a huge rating bump. I think Rivals has him as a 4*, yet his composite is in the high 700s as 247 has him ranked as in the 1700s. It seems he performed well in the camps and he hasn't played for long, so I think he is a semi-late riser in the making. Plus, Hand has been super selective with OL offers and he notched one, I think this speaks for itself on how high the ceiling for this guy could be

Here's a clip of him at a camp. He's got a crazy physique but no clue how to play. His feet look a little plodding, but I think that may just be due to him having no clue what to do in a pass drop.  Would be nice to see him do some agility workouts to measure foot speed and mobility.

Edit: Here's the link to his hudl: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/7556060/599901d2b534c122dc729380

He shows some pretty quick feet on plays in there. I'm thinking the slowness in the camp video is more due to not knowing technique. Seems like a no brainer take if we can get him.  Will be really interesting to see how much his technique improves after a whole year of training at IMG.

So what is the issue with Jeffrey Carter again?  I just watched that dudes film for the first time and wow. I didnt realize how ridiculously athletic he is.

Character/grades. I've never seen/heard exactly what it is, but for how talented he is, enough big programs have been hot and cold with him over the last year to believe something's going on.  Supposedly, some $9.95ers have been saying he's starting to clean up his act, thus UT's renewed interest.

Whatever it takes to win. Florida is stackedand they can hit, but i feel decently optimistic with us being able to throw both those guys at them. Both have been pitching well of late and they might be enough to get a full 9 without using other arms.

"good", "impact", "due time', etc...   There's not really enough meat on those words to know if the parties arguing over them are really talking about any significant gap between their opinions.

I think a better question might be what does a combination of Hepa, Hamm, and Hayes need to average (points / rebounds per game) to get this team back to the NCAA tournament?

I think a big key this year will be what we get from the SF / 3rd guard position.  Febres will get a long look.  Roach and Jones (assuming he makes it back for full fall duty) will be in that position a lot.  Will Liddell be competent to step in and provide some quality minutes if Febres is not the answer?

I am curious who gets major minutes from the Long, Liddell, Ramey pool.  My guess is Long.  I'm thinking Liddell will get a few meaningful minutes early (prior to B-12 play) to spell Febres, and Long will like be played a lot early to see if he can fill in for both Coleman and Roach.  If Long can't fill at PG efficiently for Coleman, Ramey may get a look to see if he has better PG sense than a senior Roach.

We can least afford any injury at the Center position.  I suspect DO will rotate over to Center at times, which I'm not a huge fan of when we play any team with size.  It would be nice if Hayes comes in able to contribute more than Banks did.

And, I have no idea if/how/when Cunningham will come into the fold.  My guess is he's a redshirt.

I am cautiously optimistic about next year... but, I'm not expecting a conference championship or a top-20 caliber season.

Good analysis. I think that 3rd Guard/wing spot will be really interesting to monitor.  I agree with you that Febres will likely get the first crack, since  he has the best potential to be solid on O and D. Long seems to be a huge question mark.  He won't be great defensively and we'll need our perimeter D to be strong so we don't get Sims into too much foul trouble, but he has potential to be a dynamic shooter and creator on offense. I could see him being a better version of senior Javan Felix and manning the second unit.  How good Long is will probably determine if we try to make Roach the de facto backup pg (something I'm not in favor of. I want him off ball the whole year) or give Ramey a chance to grow into that role over the year. We've obviously had a lot of talk about Hepa, but IMO Ramey probably has the best chance to play significant minutes out of all the freshman.  However, if Long is an effective offensive weapon, Ramey probably wont' get much time.

Idk much about Liddell, but Pretend We're Football seemed to all agree that he can't shoot (even though I think Tim Preston really liked him and thought he could play this year), which will probably limit his minutes quite a bit. It will be hard for us to have 2 non-shooters (Liddell and Sims) plus a below-average shooter in DO on the floor at the same time and the 2 returning guys are likely to play a lot of minutes this year. Maybe Liddell can come in if Sims is out and we play small.

Oh, and count me as a fan of it.  I like the spice and the almost leathery notes.  Wish it were about 2/3 that price, but I'm a cheap bastard...

Completely agree. 1920 is the great.  It's one of my favorites and has to be on the short list of best bourbons you can find on the shelf of just about any store.  IF it's not part of your collection, definitely want to add it.  Total Wine has it for $50, which is about 10-20% cheaper than most other places I'v seen.

I'd be surprised if any school, including UGA or Bama, had enough other guys to prioritize at LB over Davis. If we get him, it'll likely be a straight up win over Georgia.

  18. 5 minutes ago, billfromlaketravis said:

There are any number of ways to do it, but a "5th year senior" like Okafor or Shack could be talked into playing 4 games. Another year of development, more film for the NFL, and their final 4 games could all be home games.

I don't think you could do that. If they didn't use their RS in their first four years, I believe they'd be out of eligibility at that point because they'd already played four. Now a guy like Okafor this year who could play in four games and then come back for another offseason of development in hopes of getting drafted after playing a full fifth year would be a different story.

  19. 1 hour ago, Elmer_Fudd said:

So if someone like Okafor plays in 4 games or less will it count as a RS for a non-freshman player?

This rule will really change things. 4 games seems like a lot, and I'm surprised they started with such a high number, but it'll be fun to watch how coaches utilize the new rule.

    1. Could you move the goalposts any further? Literally, yes. Realistically, no.  This is a stupid way to look at how many players from a school have been successful considering only 4 different teams have won a title in the last 7 years and most of Cal's players have barely hit their primes. Anthony Davis was the second best player in the league this year and could easily be the #1 player on a title team.

    2. I would take a roster of AD, Cousins, KAT, Rondo, Wall, Booker, De'Aaron Fox, Jamal Murray, Adebayo, Julius Randle, Willey Cauley Stein, and Trey Lyles over like 90% of NBA rosters right now.
