I think this article touches on an important change. Millions of people who have been afraid of getting Covid for two years have gotten It in the last month. Now that they’re no longer afraid there will be society wide push to return to more normal life. Some Covid policies that are exclusionary or divisive will be rolled back. You need a population in fear or suffering lots of anxiety to support those kinds of policies. It just won’t be there to the same level anymore.

You have to play with the cards you've been dealt. This Senate was close to being 51-49 Republican, and Biden then would have had to deal with a GOP majority AND Manchin/Sinema.

There are ways in politics you can lose a vote but win the messaging. And yes, Manchin and Sinema create significant challenges in passing legislation but in these circumstances, you need to find common ground. Or Dems can go whine to the general public that it wasn't their fault they couldn't get anything done.

To me, the current Dem playbook is to cater to the far left progressive so they can say they tried. They can pat themselves on the back with these ideals when McConnell and McCarthy are leading Congress next year.

I’d be willing to bet that behind Manchin and Sinema there are other moderate Democrats that don’t want to really vote on these bills. For sure they didn’t want to be on the record for BBB. Manchin just took the heat and he was fine doing that because it secures his re-election. This column sums it up pretty well.

Same thing for Sinema. Last poll I saw had Biden approval rating in AZ of 42%. 35% with independents. I don’t get why posters here think that these Senators should or will just rubber stamp whatever the President wants.

He won by 33k, vs a very weak opponent

He needs to take a step towards the middle

Others have pointed out the numbers against a weaker candidate in 2018.  And Covid deaths.

Yeah, that’s the dark horse here.  This is the perfect chance for Trump to remove a competitor.  And DeSantis publicly going against Trump’s decisions this past week gives him the opening.  And Trump would absolutely destroy DeSantis in the governor’s race if he decides to run in ‘24.  Trump gives no fucks about the GOP.

Y’all talk about these Covid deaths, but they’re vastly outnumbered by the population growth in Florida. You know, the population growth in large part caused by DeSantis’ philosophy and policies.

Sushi recs, out towards Cantera or 1604 north would be great

There’s limited sushi on the menu. Maybe 6 different types of nigiri and 3 different rolls, but we went to Up Scale last night and it was excellent. It’s in the old Feast location in Southtown. Nice vibe in the place. No pics taken, but the sushi was great. I had Dover sole for the entree which they filet for you table side. Wife had lobster taglioni (?). All fantastic, but our favorite thing was the cheesecake for dessert. Very light and fluffy, not too sweet. Unlike any cheesecake I remember having before. The only downside was the service was a little slow, which I assumed was Omicron related, but the manager made up for it. We’ll be going back for sure.

Like I said in the other thread, appears to be a break with Donnie.

An interesting one ahead of DeSantis needing to win his reelection.   If DeSantis loses this fall, he's finished as far as Presidential runs.

Do you think this is going to happen? I’m trying to gauge just how out of touch you are.

Depends on where you want to eat and use the pool and see any shows or activities. Cannot beat Wynn/Encore for sure. But if you might be doing more center Strip things, could look at Sky suites at Aria (recently revamped I think), or a suite with balcony at Cosmo overlooking the Strip and Bellagio fountains.

Honestly, take a bit and study up on some of the things you and your wife might want to do.  If all you want to do is stay at one place to eat your meals and do whatnot, then Wynn might fit what you are looking for.  You certainly will spend quite a bit of money there (and you can elsewhere--- for example The Mansion at MGM will take your money).  But as pointed out, if you wish to trek out and see what this or that place might offer then something more centrally located will be more convenient.

Wife and I have a suite booked for July at Caesars; not because we think it's the place with best service or whatnot, but because we had never stayed there and wanted to cross it off the list. However, we both concur, at our age, that we are past the getting out and exploring stuff in Vegas.  We just want to lay on our asses, eat and get buzzed and get served, with minimal fuss.  For that, for us, Wynn it is.

Thanks for the recs. Never stayed at Wynn. May do that. We do like to get around some though when we travel. Last time in Vegas we went and ate at some Japanese place well off the strip that was excellent. No idea what it was called.

Perhaps wait for this to be reported from someone other than this guy via immaculate vibes

*edit* just to head this off

"but he has a citation or something in his tweet"

yeah looks like he links to some document with guidelines for hospital reporting. I don't know how information is gathered for COVID reporting, broadly and generally speaking. If the hobbit above from some weird website is the only person on the planet reporting that the federal government is going to stop counting bodies because of reasons, my occam's razor interpretation would be that this thing that he's found that hospitals are no longer required to report is... not the main source of that data, or some other explanation where "hospitals are not required to report previous day covid deaths in this manner =/= the government is going to stop tracking covid deaths".

What about this guy? Has good hashtags in his profile. Stanford connections.

Smells like bullshit, but I guess if the editor of the World Socialist Website says it’s true, what am I to believe?

The source docs are there. This step was also suggested by some of Biden old advisors.

Since the national response to covid really started with the NBA suspending its season, it'd be somewhat fitting if this is what made everyone say "fuck it, I guess it's over." Meanwhile it won't really be over and between 2,000 and 3,000 people will continue to die each day from covid, plus an untold number who die of other things that wouldn't have killed them if hospital resources weren't all tied up by antivaxxers. But we've all just about given up trying to do anything more, probably because nothing will overcome the effect of the significant number of antivaxxers we've got.

You need to move on. The administration already is.

I’ve never heard Roman, but I’m curious. Why does he have such currency with the listening public?

He’s a comedian that smokes pot and talks a lot about working out and fighting. He therefore resonates with a lot of young men.

His podcast often has his comedian friends on which can be very entertaining. He also has offbeat guests which can delve into the conspiratorial side such as Alex Jones, Adam Curry etc. It’s also a long form conversational format, often over 3 hours of just straight talking so a lot of random topics can be covered.
