  1. I had mistakenly bought tickets to the Grand Ole Opry before knowing better. It sucks. I mean, it is really awful. Octogenarians sitting in uncomfortable church pews watching terrible new country interspersed with lots of cheesy ads for cowboy boots and Tennessee tourism. I couldn't even stomach the Opry for the sake of nostalgia. They did have one really good bluegrass band but we left at intermission before we could confirm that Crystal Gayle and Ray Stevens were still alive. I just couldn't make it long enough for the slight hope that he would sing the timeless and ever politically correct Ahab the Arab.

As for the rest of it.... that's a great town. Tons of hot women, good food, people are super friendly, and live music EVERYWHERE. I mean, even in Austin, you can't plow through 8 bars with live country music at noon on a Monday. And most of them were good, too. Lots of professional musicians knocking out 3 hour sets during the middle of the week. I have no idea how they make a living there. And if you didn't like them, just go next door to the next one.

  2. There was also the late interception against WVU that didn't cost them the game, but was just as horrible nonetheless. There is an undeniable pattern of bone headedness yet I tend to mostly give the guy a pass in consideration of his being a true freshman and playing behind an atrocious offensive line. He (hopefully) doesn't have the OL excuse anymore so let's see what we have. The kid definitely showed some moxy, he just couldn't get them over the hump. Or was the hump. Or humped your mom.

  3. OK. I've been here about 6 hours. I went to the fried chicken place and it was fucking good. Waited about 40 minutes total. Then got drunk at the dive across the street watching the horns. Afterwards the Uber driver informed me that there are other locations where you don't have to wait. Lesson learned.

That said it's Sunday night and there are about 50 bars with live country bands playing the good old shit all on the same street and an excessive number of women running around in short skirts or short shorts and cowboy boots. Yeah, this place doesn't suck.

  4. To me the thing that sets Jordan apart was his pathological need to win. It was borderline unhealthy. Lebron is just as good of a player, he checks every possible box you could want, but I honestly believe that MJ was deranged. Kobe tried to emulate that (and pretty much everything else that MJ did), but he never really got there. MJ was really fucked up. I mean, go look at his HoF speech. It's the most petty thing you could imagine. He was a sick fuck. And he was the greatest basketball player I've ever seen.

  5. On one hand, if this isn't a negotiating ploy, you have to the commend the kid  for wanting to play football. In this day and age when kids sit out meaningless bowl games (which I don't begrudge, btw) to protect their mid-round draft status, I think it's a little refreshing that he's following his heart and doing what he loves. How could you put a price on the feeling of coming out of the tunnel in Dallas and playing QB in the Red River Rivalry? On the other hand, the adults in this situation including Lincoln Riley are likely doing this kid a disservice if they trot him out on the football field. I guess if it doesn't impact his contract, then it probably ultimately doesn't matter.

Lmao, my team with Stockton, Jordan, Barkley, and MVP Steph Curry lost by a 3-1 margin. Don’t get me wrong, I would have played it differently had I been able to do the draft all over again, but my team was nothing but shooters and athletes who would have run almost any other team out of the gym. You’d be hard pressed to find a team that could outscore mine, and we’d have won every game 140-133.

Well... Steph Curry wasn't an MVP yet back then. He's going to be drafted much higher now, I'd imagine. Also, you were always going to lose at Center with Artis/ Pau and at small forward with Paul Pierce. But I thought your fatal mistake was the year that you selected for Barkley. It just so happened that it was the same year I had McHale and McHale was 1st team all NBA and Charles was 2nd team. I always thought Barkley was the slightly better player overall but you literally picked the only season where I could make an objective argument otherwise. To me, that was enough to tilt the scales in my favor. Kidd and Stockton were essentially a wash. MJ was going to win out over every other 2 guard in the history of the league, regardless. I took the other 3 spots in the starting lineup. The gap between MJ and MVP KD wasn't as great as the gap between Bird / Pierce and the gap between Pau & Artis / Chief. Throw in a slight advantage to McHale and then of course there were all the folks who just wanted to poke the bear.

I won last time. As best I can remember my lineup was Duane Wade, Kobe Bryant, Dennis Rodman, Moses Malone, Ben Wallace. Allen Iverson and Ray Allen off the bench.

    Would play again.

I'll take things you didn't win for $500, Alex. Your usage rate all-star team didn't even make the finals.

And here's the classic matchup where me and the Derka-haters dethroned MJ.  You can put Team Cumsteen right up there with the Bad Boy Pistons, Father Time and internet memes that have all gotten the better of Michael Jordan.

  8. When are you thinking of starting this? I will probably have to take a pass this go around because of travel.

It's been so long since the last one that I can't remember.... did I win?

  9. That was an all-timer. Still trying to process what happened in those last few minutes of regulation.  I was pretty meh about this series going in, but that was amazing drama last night. I just hope that the Cavs didn't blow their load last night and get run out of the gym the rest of the series. The best thing that could have happened last night for a long, competitive series was the Cavs winning game 1. That would have put everybody on notice. But alas... the comedy of errors down the stretch punctuated by JR Smith. Geezus.

    Some other random thoughts:

    1. I don't know what more you could say about Lebron, he was spectacular. The gulf between him and whoever is the second best player in the world is huge.

    2. Fucking Tony Brothers. I can't believe he is employed as a NBA ref at all, but i's unfathomable that the league lets him officiate playoff games, much less the NBA Finals. He's been the worst ref in the league by a wide margin ever since Luis Grillo retired. He's an abortion. As soon as I saw his ugly mug in the first quarter, I knew that there would be a shitshow from the officials and they didn't disappoint.

    3. The Warriors are so unlikable. It's irritating enough that they have accumulated so much talent, but for them to act like such bitches is so unnecessary. They take their cue from Draymond and he's honestly one of the biggest jackasses I've ever seen on a basketball court. I always liked Thompson because he never acted like a tool, but even he went into douchebag mode last night.

    4. There were some interesting things going on defensively. I'm not sure the Warriors need to switch everything against Cleveland like they did Houston. To me, they are better off blitzing the pick and letting someone besides Lebron beat you. Take your chances with those other clowns shooting threes instead of watching Curry get abused off the dribble.

  10. I thought it was average at best. Very few of the jokes landed. Acting was mediocre. That dude didn't seem like Han at all to me. He had no edge. He seemed like a pussy-whipped beta. I'm not a very big Star Wars guy, but outside of the scenes of them flying the Falcon I thought it was pretty bad.

  11. The place we've been renting out for one week every August for the past 5-6 years is a no go for at least another 6-9 months. Sucks. On the plus side, I got fairly close to buying one of those units last year so there's that stroke of good luck.

I've been looking at South Padre instead this year for the annual family beach trip. It's only a couple of more hours in the car but I feel like a traitor.

  13. All in all, this was a horribly disappointing series. These two teams were supposed to be screaming up and down the court drilling threes and moving the ball and instead we got a brick fest full of iso ball, terrible shot selection and turnovers.

Neither team deserved to win this series. The Warriors.... my God, I understand taking open or at least near open threes early in the shot clock when you have shooters like Durant and Curry and Thompson. But I don't care how great KD is or how many times he actually makes them, taking a well contested three, three feet behind the line, with 18 seconds on the clock without ever passing the ball is horrible fucking basketball. It's one thing to take that shot with less than 5 seconds on the clock  because of course, you have to shoot. The rest of the time its selfish stupid hero ball. How he doesn't know better is beyond me. The Warriors were infinitely more entertaining to watch before he joined them. And I also get they've been prone to flurries of turnovers in the past, but I've seen crisper play in the Summer League. How they come out in Game 7 and play like that is just mind boggling.

And the Rockets.... they play a horrible brand of basketball. So much one on one after picking a guy out on defense to isolate. And the Warriors do it to, they are just less obvious about it. But you know, there are other ways to skin a cat. Maybe slip a screen every now and then. Maybe run a shooter off a couple of stagger screens and when they switch, pin down the switcher for a post up. I get that D'Antoni is going to play his way but holy shit it's painful to watch. And you can't chalk missing 27 threes in a row to fatigue or great defense or the pressure of a game 7 or just having bad luck or whatever. It's clearly the basketball Gods punishing them for their sins. Live by the jumpshot, die by the jumpshot. RIP 2018 Houston Rockets.
