  1. They lost their starting QB after starting the season 6-1. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Look around. Texas with something like average QB play is sitting at #2 behind Ohio State. With 2 freshmen on the OL and no Neyor.

    Physician, heal thyself.
  2. Ok. He won ten games year 2 and played in the Sugar Bowl. You’re bad at this

    And then regressed.

And if you think what’s he’s done at Alabama isn’t a substantial level of sustained success higher than he’d ever demonstrated before over more than a decade, that’s on you.
  3. It’s also the NFL and the dynamics of coaching success are far far different. There’s no inherent advantage to coaching the Pats, or Browns. There’s inherent advantages to coaching places like Washington, USC, and Texas. 500 in the nfl is not 500 in college.

How long did Saban coach before he started turning out winning machines?
  4. Strong had a better resume as a HC than Sark. At least he had won something.
Also, there were like 4 people saying Strong was trash at this point and we were roundly ridiculed. I know because Vic Mackey was one of them and I was like “hmmm, am I crazy?”
What we were watching was all part of the plan, they said.

If Sarkisian had experienced Teddy Bridgewater we’d be making playoff reservations.

  5. Yea I didn't count them as they were obviously a pretty strong team that year.  OU and Nebraska in 2009 were just ok to kind of go with the, you are gonna get in some tight down to the wire games with competition on paper you should stomp on.

    Fair.
  6. Right our 2009 team needed Colt McCoy to make a tackle after he threw a pick deep in our own end to avoid potentially losing to OU, and then of course there was the Big12 Champ Game, not to mention aggy was in the balance until late that year.
And both Michigan and Ohio State that you mention had close calls yesterday.  Michigan needing a game winning (or losing) FG and Maryland had the ball with a minute left down by 3 against tOSU before Tua2 got strip sacked.   It's part of the deal unless we are talking 2005 Horns regular season.

Ohio State comes to mind in 2005. Oklahoma State was more than one play, but it was ugly until the pump fake.
  7. Checking in on the four former Big-12 members:  A&M, Nebraska, and Colorado are officially ineligible to play in a bowl game and Missouri has to beat Arkansas to get into one.

So Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado and A&M ... how'd that work out for you?

I can ALMOST see why Missouri and A&M left even though neither has done jack shit since they moved to the SEC, but Nebraska and Colorado signed a death warrant when the moved.  Nebraska will never be relevant in football again.

A&M wasn’t exactly lighting up the Big 12, one glorious Sirr Parker upset notwithstanding.

  8. The fumble at the end was abjectly lucky and ISU was marching down to score with basically no time left. That game was one of those where it was much more of an ISU loss than a Texas win, IMO.

    Basically no time left?

Two minutes. More, if they score on the botched open pass.

But, sure, a score from the 28 was a given.

  9. Texas really probably should have won the Tech game. I think the team played winning football for the most part. The post game win probability bears that out. That one was almost entirely lost on the headsets with a fumble mixed in for funsies. But Texas probably should have lost to ISU so that kind of balances out.

OSU, Texas “should” have won in that they clearly delivered a poor performance on both the field and the sidelines, but still had a chance to win the game. If they played/coached better, which they’re capable of. the game was there for the taking… but they didn’t so they deservedly lost.

I said when we lost to Tech and for a while after that the loss would be the albatross around Texas’s neck when it came to getting to Arlington, but I’d actually give that distinction to OSU now (yes I know that they all technically are). Just a terrible, frustrating loss. At least TCU is a good team and Tech was the conference opener with a backup QB.

Why should Texas probably have lost to ISU?
  10. The real turn for me was when it was 13-3 and Indy just stopped Philly on 4th and 10. They got the ball at their own 43. Could have put a dagger in Philly. Yet they got no points at all. I think they actually turned it over and Philly went down and scored to make it 16-10. You just knew Matt Ryan's dorky ass wasn't doing shit the rest of the game. I have no idea how he still has  a job.

I feel like even one play action on any of the dozen of ± 2 yard dives on first down in the second half could’ve made a difference.

  11. Deception is a big part of it but only having 1 game breaker at receiver slows down the offense when X is taken out. Building 3 or 4 deep in the WR room like he did at Bama makes it unstoppable. Secondly who on his team is a jump ball catcher that can make a play when it's absolutely necessary? We needed that in all 4 losses when the offense stalled to help QE but nobody was there to step up. He's had some drops at a&m this year but Stewart's grab against Ole Miss would have been the best catch by a mile for us. As great as X is he's just not that guy unless it's in his chest.

I’m not against having more talent — and I doubt Sarkisian is, either — but that doesn’t mean his game plans are built on out-athleting the other guys.
  12. Those are strong comparisons. Did any of them quickly have to turn over 40% of the roster to replace incompetents and malcontents and have to start two freshmen on OL in season 2?

The first two years haven’t gone as swimmingly as most had hoped, but this team would throttle the team that Sarkisian took over. There’s plenty of room for improvement in all phases, but I wouldn’t start lowering the lifeboats just yet.

  13. If you follow the game thread, we are 0-11, can't block, tackle, cover, they all suck and the entire staff should not be allowed back on the bus.  I love it.
Beat the fuck out of baylor. ,

As I said over there when I read it, I had to check espn to make sure Texas really was on the right side of 55-14.

I get that there’s more to a successful process than the final score, but being that unhappy during an utter dismantling of a team that’s embarrassed Texas a couple of times in a row probably doesn’t make for a very enjoyable experience.
  14. Sark's game plans are built on being able to out athlete the other team like he did at Bama. While I am still not 100% sold on his tenure there has been progression on defense and the offensive line while trending up in the QB room and hopefully the WR room through the portal and 23 class. With whos coming in and how the schedule sets up next year 10-2 should be the standard and anything less than that is cause for dismissal imo (barring any major screw jobs or injuries)

It certainly seems like there’s a generally a lot of motion and deception rather than “we’re just going line up and beat your ass Earl Campbell-style.”

It’s entirely possible I’m just not see it. What are you seeing that gives you this impression?
  15. How about TCU’s last two opponents were Texas and Baylor .. most recent sample size for all three?  Baylor’s overall performance was better than ours.

It’s next to meaningless. What matters the most, imo, is matchups. A team with an elite run defense might work a running team and get steamrolled by a passing team, even if that running team just beat the passing team.

The game most likely will turn on whether Baylor is forced to play the pass at least somewhat honestly, because they have a better chance than Kansas of stopping Texas’ run via numbers.

It will have nothing to do with how they performed against common opponents.
