  1. Since the FLSA figures use minimum wage rates to determine the threshold for exempt jobs, the bump in minimum wage in Washington is having an unexpected impact in higher education.

Now coaches and a lot of student development staff who (by nature) work long or irregular hours are being pushed to hourly status (particularly at smaller institutions where 'just raising their salary' isn't an option).

Coupled with a number of state laws and DoE requirements, it's also turning a lot of these positions into ones that are primarily administrative (since there are other penalties if you don't follow the regulations) rather than the educational/developmental/mentoring/counseling work that's been their focus. This is unfortunately coinciding with the rise in student emotional health issues and interpersonal immaturity that we're seeing post pandemic.

    Good times.

  2. You know what I got for Christmas this year? It was a banner f***in' year at the old NWBuck family. I got a carton of cigarettes. The old man grabbed me and said "Hey. Smoke up Johnny."

Seriously... I asked the family to not buy anything for me; we have enough 'stuff' and there are lots of opportunities to spend money on people who are in need instead. So my (art student) daughter made me a painting, and the youngest wrote me a letter. The wife purchased tickets for us for a concert... that's on Super Bowl Sunday. Ah well...

My female neighbor says she can hear me watching porn. Not sure if I should be mad at her or she should be mad at me

    Two thoughts...

She can hear you while she's watching porn? That's an invitation, broseph.

She didn't say that she can hear the porn you're watching, so I'm considering the possibility that she's concerned about your friction burns.

The myriad Johann Bachs definitely win for best family of musicians...what were there, 5 or 6 of them?

    Talk about nepo-babies.

Sure, but they lose a lot of points for Sebastian

Not Tacoma related, but I will be buying a house in Sultan, on the road to stevens pass. Further out than I would like, but I went to where the price point fit.  Preference being mountains to ocean, so we looked east instead of north.

I'll wave next time I head up to Lake Serene or Wallace Falls or Colchuck or... It's a gorgeous area. We're actually Vrbo-ing in Gold Bar after Christmas

Too many people to quote on this so far but regarding the pool and the bonus...

Clark already put down a 7k deposit on the pool - he says it in the movie.  And he says he doesn't have enough in checking to cover that.

Bonuses back in the 80s were a huge chunk of changed that was an expected although not guaranteed part of a salary; from what I've read or heard from older family members, anywhere from 20-30% of the salary.  Eliminating it would have been a big deal.

Looks like someone on reddit calculated his bonus to be between $20k (expected) and $24k (realized after the kidnapping)

  7. I love Tacoma, and would live there if I didn't work in Seattle. Although, with the light rail expansion, some of that will be mitigated.

Wife lived in the Hilltop area near Stadium high school (10 Things I Hate About You) before we got married. The Stadium District has really developed... Food, pubs, coffee shops; and downtown has a great vibe with all the museums (near the UW extension).

There's an area just beyond the Stadium District called the North End that has some great older houses overlooking the Sound. And a bit further north is Point Defiance, a huge park with great hiking trails, a replica fort/settlement, and a pretty cool zoo.

Another nice area is University Place, right near the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. If you are OK commuting and want to be away from the urban core, Gig Harbor is just across the bridge.

Let me know if I can be of any additional assistance.

  8. According to FIL, there wasn't a discussion about "how", just "who".

I guess George had some extra explosives from a previous project, and did some sort of calculation about "x amount blows up a stump, so 100x amount should take care of things".

    1. Turn off your brights, asshole.  It's the dead of night in backwoods Burnet county, and your freaking LED lights just blinded me and 5 other cars for the next two minutes.

Right there with you... with the new LED projection bulbs, they're brighter at the start as well. When I walk the Wonder Dog in the neighborhood (very wooded, no streetlights), I appreciate people actually using their headlights to avoid hitting us (even with the dog's light up collar, it always feels like a 50/50 bet). But the bright lights are the worst...

My solution is an EDC flashlight with "turbo" mode that I can flash for a second before returning to "walking the dog" brightness. Most folks get the drift and drop their lights (or the lights auto-correct as if it were another vehicle)... and if they don't, I can always switch to "strobe" mode (not directed towards their vehicle, just as a visual reminder that there are other people out here).
