Kentucky and Indiana closed 32 minutes ago. So here's a John Prine Song

I once read an article in the Atlantic written by a right wing professor who sneered at that song as hippy dippy airy fairy green bullshit.

Well, as was so often the case with John’s songs, pretty much every word of it was true and came from his lived experience. He just was so skilled at expressing those truths they sounded like he was making them up.

As everyone knows John was a Chicagoan. Only his fans know about his parents coming from the flatland coal fields of western Kentucky. Muhlenberg County, to be exact, where there really was once a tiny village called Paradise. And how his dad would often take him out of Chicago and on Andy Griffith-credits type rifle and rod trips to where the Prines had lived a long time.

And see the name painted on the side of that ungodly big excavator?

And yep at the time that machine or a big brother model belonging to the same Peabody coal concern really did sport the world’s biggest shovel, the better to scoop and tump Paradise in Mr Peabody’s coal train.

So — hippy dippy bullshit my cracka ass cracka ass.

^^^^ This time 100.  Comparing the dude to SJL is a gross insult to him.  Disagree with his politics, all you want, but the guy does a ton for the community and is never afraid to put his money where his mouth is.  Unlike some cunt that is just a leech on society and stupid to boot.

This tremendous good he does for the community hinges largely on that one time he let a few dozen people crash on his floor models for a few hours during Harvey.

As usual he made sure every news crew in town was on the scene. And of course this didn’t really cost him any money as it was just floor models he “sacrificed” out of his tremendous sense of public spirited generosity.

Either that or he wanted (and got) an enormous amount of free advertising at a time when half the city had to replace all their furniture.

I won’t accuse him of lacking marketing skills, but the gulf between who he really is — a completely self interested shill— and who Houstonians believe him to be — a generous philanthropist — is very wide.

    i

Oh and there was that time he swindled his investors in his health club chain, got busted for coke, a lion mauled a little girl at a flea market he owned, and a warehouse he owned went up in flames under circumstances very beneficial to his bottom line.

  4. Dumbass Reggie Bush Wendy’s breakfast ad.

    First, it’s Reggie Bush.

Second, it makes my brain hurt. Reggie congratulates the kid for the presumed value of the breakfast deal, as if this zit-faced kid is making C-suite decisions. And then he says “and they redshirted you!” As if getting shirted is akin to making the All American squad.

That idiocy is bolstered twice, first when the kid says “It’s just a work shirt,” and then again when Reggie says “Way to stay humble, kid.”

See? It’s just literally so stupid you can’t wrap your ahead around it. What the fuckety fuck are they even trying to say there?

  5. If you are pulling for Sam you don’t want him out there getting pulverized. That’s how the Texans ruined David Carr and thereby set the course for decades of comical futility.

I’d play Foles if I was the Colts and had any belief that Sam had a prominent role in the team’s future. Playing him now is either stupid (pissing away QB of the future) or cynical (Sam as punching bag).

There was a third possibility under Reich — maybe he believed Sam could save his job.

    Well, that didn’t happen, so….

Hoping he rides pine for now is the smart move.

  6. I just don’t get the citywide reverence for this cokehead asshole carnie.

He's been a city oddity for over four decades - slightly annoying, but a fixture.  There is definitely a marketing aspect to it, but he has been an enthusiastic supporter of Houston sports teams the entire time.  People love that.  His response during and after Harvey won him tons of goodwill.  As already said, there is a calculated marketing aspect to his unabashed support of all things Houston, but there is also a genuine affection for and gratitude to the city where he achieved success.

Everybody, definitely myself included gives Sheila Jackson Lee shit for crushing anything that gets between her and the cameras during times of both strife and celebration and he is exactly the same, only with opposite politics. He does it for cash and she does it to keep her stranglehold on office. Both of them can get fucked.

Marvin Zindler? Now that dude rocked and I wish he’d lived long enough to enjoy this.

Whatever it is, given the current make-up of the team/farm system, I hope they are already proposing a similar arrangement with Yuli and Machete when the time comes.

Especially Yuli. I’ve heard he’s about equivalent to the MJ of Cuba, thanks to his domestic career and heroism for the national team.

Man, Team Cuba would be REALLY fucking salty if there was a more normal political situation and they’d field not just natives still living there but also emigres and the US-based children and grandchildren of other emigres.

What's going on with Foreman today aside from the Panthers just getting crushed?  He had 3 carries in the first half.

Probably a relapse of the AIDS/purple drank addiction combo Surly pathologists diagnosed him with from a single photo posted a few years ago.

For those San Antonio folks, Lucky the elephant has died.  Euthanized at 62.

I've always liked elephants.  I got to ride Lucky when I was a kid, when they still allowed that.  This makes me sadder than the deaths of some people I know.

    Sorry for your loss, sincerely.

On a related note, not sure if the Houston zoo ever allowed elephant rides, but one of my earliest memories is riding a Galapagos turtle. Not sure when those namby pamby PC wussed cratered to PETA and banned the turtle rides, but my kids never got to do it.

One thing they do allow now that they did not back in the day: by special request, you can go up on a platform and hand feed the giraffes at eye level.

Highly recommend you take the kids and do it if you can at your local zoo. Borrow someone else’s kids if necessary. It’s a very soothing experience

  10. There’s a Bill James article out there somewhere about the physiognomy of hitters and their longevity. Basically huge guys tend to fall off a cliff around 34, 35 whereas average and smaller guys can hit well up to an occasionally past 40.

As a very large somewhat humanoid ogre, I would not be surprised if Judge just stopped being Aaron Judge very suddenly as happened with Pujols and Dale Murphy.
