  1. When he starts carpet bombing with B-52s or napalming forests let me know.
  2. Saw it last night....I don't think it was as good as Boyhood or Bernie but I loved it a ton, anyway. I wish I could make the same movie about my HS experience. Different music but basically the same, only add ecstasy and 80s girls were nowhere near as hot as 70s chicks.
  3. Or a bunch more Ukrainians and Russians die and then all the rest of us too when this goes nuclear
  4. Grozny and Aleppo are like shithole Mexican cities to the average Russian. Kiev is like a combo of Rome and San Antonio to patriotic and religious Russians (analogy works best if you are an Anglo Texas Catholic). I am not saying he isn't bombing it but he is not going to lay it waste Dresden style. Whatever he does will be as "surgical" as Russians can get. And as for occupying it, it will be another Green Zone type thing. He can't hold the whole city. I am sure there are some petty pro-Russian warlords in the vicinity he can stir up but he can't go in there and put the whole metro on lock. And he can't engineer a humanitarian crisis to the extent he might like so long as food and medicine and opportunities to flee exist on the western border. Meanwhile he's encountering all that resistance in the south and east....he can't properly occupy those cities either. He's kinda fucked. Not Nazi 6th Army at Stalingrad fucked but kinda close.
  5. Dude, he is not going to pulverize Kyiv. What point would that serve him? If he is prepared to do that he is prepared for total global thermonuclear war. Maybe he is, but his oligarchs ain't. And even absent nuclear deterrence, what point would that serve? He'd be universally reviled abroad and widely reviled at home. It's just not happening.
  6. 50 pound bag of rice in the freezer is a decent humblebrag.
  7. We do have the concept of a benevolent dictator, a "healthy," or "positive" narcissist....Lincoln and FDR both had the ego to shred the law to bring about their desired aims. The believed they knew better than the masses and were not hesitant to act on their egos.
  8. Before we get too high and mighty let's imagine what it would be like if our own working class traveled en masse.
  9. If you don't believe me you don't know Valhalla. The bartenders thought it was hilarious.
  10. I've long been in favor of two-year conscriptions for the USA. Doesn't have to be military. But that's another thread Russians, man. A bunch of them used to hang out at Valhalla, the Rice U grad student pub. For those of you who don't know, it's infamous for it's ridiculously cheap beer. I haven't been in about ten years but I doubt it's much more than a dollar a cup even today. Back in 1999, it was 50 cents. So I went in there one Wednesday night and it was pretty empty. There was this one Russian dude in there drunk off his ass slamming beers as soon as he the bartender set them down. The only thing that slowed him down was that he was paying for each 50 cent beer with individual hand-written checks. You could tell he was having trouble with the Roman alphabet, too. So he'd get a beer, down the hatch, and spend the next five minutes trying to write checks for 50 cents. I finally took pity on him and gave him about $3 and told him to party on.
  11. Well maybe in this little theater of this conflict we can enjoy it as an Aggie-Sooner contest with tons of season-ending injuries on both sides.
  12. Also one that has a nuke headed to LaGrange and two headed for Natchez MS, but none aimed at the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Nope, it all went to shit because of that snitch Mike Fiers.
  13. No, sorry I was unclear. My son's old army buddy -- by old, I mean they served together and both got out last year -- is hooked up with some kind of ad hoc American Foreign Legion and is headed over there. He's made the decision. He wants me to hook their unit up with an embedded journalist, who would then be my responsibility in my own mind. I agree about the doing what he loved part but I dread having to deal with parents and loved ones and also the load on myself....This is why recruiters have such a high rate of suicide, I believe. They really do build a rapport with they kids they enlist, even if a significant amount of what they tell them is bullshit.
  14. No, the kid is going. I ain't. I am too old and fat. 30 years ago I would have. But he is asking me to help him find someone who is willing to go, and I would be kind of thrust into the position of recruiter in that I would feel responsible for him while he is embedded over there. And there could be a day when I have grieving parents and siblings and girlfriends coming at me for hooking this kid up with this gig.
  15. My son's best army buddy just texted me wanting to know if I could help him find a kid journalist to embed in their unit of American legionnaires. I don't know any candidates off the top of my head because I am an old now, but I know there are probably ten thousand young journalists who would leap at the chance. Dilemma is what if something happens to them, and I am the guy who hooked it up?
  16. I am with you on everything except the degree to which he -- and more importantly the troops in the field -- are willing go on numbers 3 and 4. But that could just be me succumbing to Ukrainian propaganda about Russian troops mutinying, abandoning tanks, etc.
  17. They have retroactively voted for a regime not too long ago....I am kind of foreseeing a Ceaucescu like downfall. He will go out to address the people and it will all seem to be going along swimmingly until one fucker hollers "Eat a dick, Vlady," and then the whole crowd will turn, while he stands their bewildered hearing the cheers turn to catcalls, until his security detail hustles him off the stage. Or maybe he doesn't address crowds at all because guys like him remember that day. Anyway, f he destroys those churches he will get got.
  18. From a lifetime of driving on Texas beaches without ever getting stuck once, despite never having a 4-wd, I think I qualify for instant NCO status in a cavalry unit so long as its confined to the desert. I can read sand well. I don't know shit about mud, though.
  19. In every war there is propaganda and in this new age we live in we are exposed to more of it than ever. The first thing I ask about any Tweet coming from "official sources" in the Ukraine is "whose interest does this serve." Putin destroying that church out of spite would instantly ignite street protests bordering on riots all over Russia. If there is excommunication in the Orthodox church, he would jump to the front of the list. He would lose his mantle as savior of Holy Mother Russia. I mean, I wish a n----a would. It would be his death warrant. I also wish Americans would learn some skepticism.
  20. Neither Hitler nor Stalin -- who pulled down some amazing churches to put the institution in its place -- destroyed it. Why on earth would Putin?
  21. I saw Ron Paul cite the Golden Rule -- how would we like it if they did this to us, re Middle East policy -- in a GOP debate in SC in 2012. He was heartily booed by that fine Christian audience. This is regarding the alleged intel the Ukes have rec'd regarding "intercepted plans" to pulverize the Mother Church of all Russians out of pure spite. Come on, people, learn to recognize propaganda when you see it. This would be like if Mexico seized Texas and our leadership in exile decided to level the Alamo for no reason at all. And think of how this plays on the world stage -- Bamiyan Buddhas times ten. And in Russia it would be even more widely and profoundly reviled. Putin is not going to nuke his own army unless it's part of an Armageddon scenario. This guy gets it. Thank you, Flatulent Abbot.
  22. How many of y'all have been sliding in to the DMs of those kinda hot western European DefMins?
  23. Not suggesting this is in any way realistic right now, but maybe at the end of a year or two of insurgency and crushing sanctions, the Bear may be made to dance to our tune. I think this enforced neutrality is the best music to play.
