We—my wife and I—are not hikers, campers, or outdoor adventurers! Last year, our good friends mentioned that they had always wanted to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc, so we decided to join them and booked a hike for this summer—10 days and over 100 miles! The largest elevation gain in one day will be 3500ft. The highest elevation will be about 8500ft. We also chose to self-book a no-guide trip using a website called the Hiking Club. Everything is planned and booked, and the training has started.
Since we’re not experienced hikers, we’re taking a more "comfort" approach to the trip. Each night, we will stay in a hotel or refugio, though there will be a few nights where we share a room with four to six people, as our group consists of six (two in their late 40s, two in their early 50s, and two in their early 60s). No outdoor camping and no mass dorm rooms!
We’ll be carrying packs with our essentials for the trip. The wives are considering paying for a bag transfer from accommodation to accommodation, but I think once we pack, they'll realize they don’t need anything extra.
Has anyone ever hiked the TMB? Any tips?
The Camino is my retirement celebration trip in a few years!
That's some bougie ass hike. Sounds like a fun trip with the Mrs.
Don't be fooled. It's a tough hike. Looks like about 30k feet of elevation gain throughout the hike. Views look incredible.

Well damn. Learned from Reddit. I guess citizen.com is a thing. Anyway, someone posted a video of the body floating facedown in the lake on that site. A crew row boat rows right by with nary a clue.
Looks like a pay site but you can Explore -> Austin and see the video.

Bury the power lines in the unused subway tunnels. Problem solved.
$50B government contract? Holes is the Earth?
Elon Musk is going to spend $millions buying council members so that his Boring Co can bore 20' diameter tunnels for the power lines for $billions.

I've got a great vacation idea. Let's get in a sub on our next vacation.
At least 6 dead after submarine carrying tourists on a reef tour in Red Sea sinks off Egypt
CAIRO (AP) — A recreational submarine taking 45 tourists on an underwater cruise of coral reefs in the Red Sea sank off the Egyptian resort town of Hurghada on Thursday, leaving six Russians dead, the provincial governor said. The remaining tourists, more than two dozen of whom were injured, were rescued, he said.
The cause of the sinking was not immediately known. The Russian consulate said it took place about 1,000 meters (0.6 miles) offshore.
The submarine was carrying 45 tourists and five Egyptian crewmembers when it sank, Red Sea governor Maj. Gen. Amr Hanafi, said in a statement, adding that rescue teams were quickly sent.
He said all six dead were Russians, and that 29 of the 39 tourists rescued were injured and taken to hospitals. No one was still missing from the vessel, he said, suggesting the crew had also been rescued.
Hurghada is a major destination for divers, snorkelers and other tourists drawn by the Red Sea's extensive coral reefs.
The submarine, named “Sindbad,” runs 1- to 3-hour tours, usually cruising at about 20-25 meters (65-80 feet) underwater with panoramic windows on the bottom to give views of the marine life, according to the website of the company that the Russian consulate identified as running the vessel.
The company did not respond to phone calls seeking comment.
Russia’s Tass news agency earlier said the Russian dead included at least two children, citing the country's consul in Hurghada. The consulate had said all 45 tourists on board were Russian, but the Egyptian governor said they also included Indian, Norwegian and Swedish citizens.

$50B for systemwide. They identified $1.6B of lines where you could make the business case to do it.
Market it as giving the homeless electricity and the shit will pass.

The document isn't coming through so not sure what is in the scope of the study. Is the $50B to bury all lines or strategically to bury the lines which are more at risk for being downed? I highly doubt that it's the latter. The solution doesn't have to be all or nothing.

So, who's going where this year?
I'm spending Aug and Sep in Pagosa Springs. Wife and I really liked Golden/Boulder last year but I have a soft place in my heart for PS. The San Juan mountains views simply cannot beat. Looking to play a lot of golf, do a ton of hiking, maybe climb another 14'er or 2 or 3, chilling on the river, eating a few meals at Meander Eatery (incredible restaurant), driving/exploring Colorado for the views, enjoying the cool mountain air at 7200 feet, and most importantly, getting the fuck out of Texas and the oppressive heat.

Junior Brown picked Colorado State, which is where she's wanted to go since her sophomore year. I will say, I was pretty impressed with the insane amount of support the engineering department provides students. We will probably buy a second home in Fort Collins next summer, so that will save some living expenses in the future.
Overall, she went 13 for 13 acceptances and received the max, or near the max, merit scholarship at every school except for CU Boulder, which gave nothing.
One school that was very affordable was Washington State. Their out of state tuition was the cheapest of every school and with the merit aid, it was actually cheaper than the Arkansas or New Mexico in-state rate she was offered.
Her acceptance list:
- Colorado State
- Colorado School of Mines
- Colorado
- Northeastern
- UMass
- Bucknell
- Penn State
- Vermont
- Washington State
- Oregon State
- Maine
- Arkansas
- New Mexico
Congrats on having a very smart daughter. Surely it's from the mother's side. Ft Collins is a cool as fuck town. But any of the 3 Co college towns are cool as shit.

Might want to start deleting. But let's be real, the company has the info backed up and will sell anyway. Deleting won't prevent shit. Its "assets" includes your very personal DNA information. Yay you!
This just reaffirms my belief that nothing good comes from volunteering your DNA for this shit. Best scenario is you confirm the status quo that your parents said you are who they said you are. Worst case scenario is a choose your own adventure book.
Millions of people’s DNA up for sale as 23andMe goes bankrupt
Customers urged to consider deleting their data after genetic testing company collapses
Millions of people will have their DNA data put up for sale after major at-home testing company 23andMe filed for bankruptcy.
The company, which has tested more than 15m people’s genetic makeup using post-in saliva kits, including more than 250,000 in the UK, announced that it had entered US bankruptcy protection in an attempt to sell the company.
It said that data privacy would be an “important consideration” but added that it was seeking to “maximise the value of its assets”.
Privacy advocates have urged consumers to delete their 23andMe data as the company’s share price crash has raised concerns that the data could be sold off to data brokers or to target adverts.
