  1. Wikipedia (I know, I never let my kids cite Wikipedia) has a pretty interesting history of Minstrel shows in America. The first uniquely American art form. Lots of current entertainment and culture have some roots in that form.  Not saying it’s right, but it is not just UT history but American history.  Part of the reason that racism is so deeply ingrained in Americans I expect.

  2. So I’ve always enjoyed the coarser grind type of sausage (German?) that we used to get at a place on the way to Lake Texoma maybe in Muenster?  What type of CenTex sausage does that correspond to?  I like stopping at the Southside Market in Elgin for sausage but it seems more of a finer grind.  Maybe Meyers in Elgin?  A lot of questions here.

We ate there a lot when our kids were little -- was an easy place to get a kid-friendly meal quickly, while mom and dad got something they at least liked.  Problem was, we went so much that the kids drew the wrong lesson from it.

When my daughter was around 2, when my birthday came around, I came home from work, and she greeted me excitedly at the door -- "DADDY!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY!  For your birthday, we're going to your FAVORITE restaurant!"  "Okay, honey -- and where's that?"  "LUBY'S!"  So that's where we went.  Because when your daughter wants to celebrate at Luby's, you celebrate at Luby's.

I mean, I may have celebrated by ordering an unhealthy meal -- like CFS, fried okra, and mac n cheese, with a slice of chocolate cream pie.

    But no beer.

Damn, now I want some Fuddrucker's.   Always thought it would be cool to do a large scale Cafeteria with some sort of offering/dish from each state.

    In Vegas.

  5. I guess you throw Fudruckers in there as well, owned by the same company.  Down the street from my house is a combo Fudruckers/Luby’s in the same building.  Next door was a PDQ Chicken place (Also closed). All built in the last five years, that block is going to look empty for a while.

Pretty good advice here. Basically the high end is definitely nicer, but it's a law of diminishing returns, and you need to make a judgement call on what it's worth to you. Personally, I buy the higher end stuff for the fit, the cheaper stuff is much more blousey.

That said, if they are a gift I'd probably say use that opportunity to try the nice stuff so you can compare what you buy in the future.

More Americans like the fit of the lower end stuff.

  7. The higher end jerseys breathe and wick moisture better, better/softer materials, smoother seams, more comfortable for longer rides.  That said, it’s up to you to decide if they’re worth the extra cost.  I have a few high end jerseys and shorts that I wear on club rides and longer rides (3+ hours) then a grab bag of older stuff that I tend to wear to spin class or on shorter rides early in the morning or off road.

Personally I would start with some basic stuff and wear that for a while till I felt like cycling was something I was gonna do for the long term, then invest in the better stuff.

  8. I don’t know about Memorial City Piccadilly’s, but the downtown one in Wichita Falls had a tremendous breakfast layout for a middle/high schooler in the late ‘70’s.

    sorry about your Luby’s. RIP
