  1. This red-tailed hawk could not give fewer fucks about the dozens of purple martins mobbing it as it calmly landed on the side of the house, jammed its talons into a hole and pulled out one of the birds.

  2. And by will have devastating consequences, I mean is having devastating consequences currently. It's not just a turtle going extinct here or there. Biodiversity loss will harm future generations of humans. So I believe that while population decline may put a financial burden on generations such as my own, fewer people consuming less is a good thing long-term, for both people and the planet.

    Insect populations plummeting

North America has lost 3 BILLION birds

    All wildlife populations collapsing

    Massive loss of natural habitat

    Fisheries are depleted

  3. 2 year sleep regression is underway. I don't know if that's a typical thing, but he will NOT fall asleep in his crib. Once he's out, he can be moved there and will usually sleep through the night.

I'm ready to get back to sleep training and let him cry it out, but my wife is understandably reluctant, because there is a 50/50 shot that he will work himself up into a coughing fit and puke everywhere. Fun stuff.

Any ID on this bird at my feeder? Sorry not aimage.thumb.jpeg.2087e0100415ae2e4a2c2f01196aeace.jpeg great pic. Nothing like I've seen here before. Cheap free app says Summer Tanager.

Yep, a young male that hasn't attained the fully red plumage of an adult

  5. I'm working backwards on Korean History. Read The Two Koreas, written way back in '97, on the political history of the peninsula post-Korean War. You know who doesn't care for presidential immunity? The South Koreans. It seems like all their presidents end up behind bars.

    I'm now working on this...

Pretty captivating so far. I don't know really anything about Chosin Reservoir, but it doesn't seem like it's going to go well. My grandfather served in this war, but I unfortunately don't know any further specifics.

  6. Spring migration is peaking probably today through the weekend. Lots to see out there right now. Had a nice golden-winged warbler along Brushy Creek earlier and probably a dozen orioles.

  7. Rolling wasn't so bad, except for inside the cabinets, but I wasn't too particular other than getting decent coverage near the opening. Liking the two-tone look so far. Going to start sanding shelves and the top doors are done, so the top should be fully done in the next week or so.

Whale Watching is absolutely hilarious.   I hated Unicorse the first time I saw it, but now think it's one of the funniest episodes.....

    "Annnnnnnnnnnnnddddddd, Why should I care?"

I know I'm annoying because I think Bandit's unicorse, and especially the lawyer puppet, are hilarious.

Bluey is my morning go-to while wrestling the 2 year-old into his clothes and brushing his teeth. He definitely likes jamming out to to the intro more than the actual show. Bluey theme, wheels on the bus and any Red Hot Chili Peppers are probably his top 3 songs at the moment.

Yeah. Interesting thing is, I’ve seen multiple in just the last few weeks, after never seeing any around here (only ever saw them in S Texas). They’re a cool-ass bird.

They used to be restricted to south Texas, but their range has been steadily moving northward. Even in DFW, they're somewhat regular now.

  10. Found a really good migrant for central Texas today in MacGillivray's warbler. I also found the gas company cutting a wide path through this particular stretch of woods during peak migration and early nesting season. Fuckers.

I'm sure all the people living in the climate cataclysm will understand.

We should curtail child births, but the DNA won't allow it. That's something nobody can stop.

We could take bolder steps regarding cars and mass transit, but it's too costly and inconvenient.

We could make owning a new pet extremely expensive through licensing, but dogs are great.

We're spoiled. We don't want to do anything that changes our status quo.

I'm not doing a lot myself. I don't eat nearly as much beef as I did, I'm careful with water (not a climate thing, but I need enough stuff for another comma), and I'm about to buy a car that gets twice as much MPG as our current main vehicle. Electric is impossible where we live.

We will be hated. Rightfully despised. I cannot be satisfied to shrug my shoulders and do absolutely nothing.

    We don't listen, either.

We've chose the FAFO approach. It's a bold strategy. I've become quite the curmudgeon about basically everything, although I've learned to keep most of my thoughts in my head to prevent everyone around me from being miserable.

My inner monologue goes something like "Do we really need another strip center? Why are there so many giant goddamn pickup trucks? What is the purpose of planting a bunch of non-native grass just to pay people to use gas-chugging mowers and weedeaters to cut it every week? Why is there so much shit in my own house? Does everything need to come in plastic? Why are we all getting a bunch of bullshit delivered to our front door in 3 extra layers of packaging? Is it so hard to have recycling bins available? Oh yea, because people can't even be trusted to walk 3 feet to throw something in a trash can when they can just leave it at there feet."

It would be nice if we as a society showed some urgency in solving any of the myriad issues contributing to climate change, but having stuff and never being inconvenienced are what we value most.

  12. Since she likes writing stories, she should author a terrifying children's tale in which she is the monster. "Eat your veggies and brush your teeth or the Noem will drag you to the pit and put two in your head."

Does UT still allow the anti-abortion group to set up shop at the corner in front of Gregory with their giant pictures of aborted fetuses like they did in the late 90s?

I also recall in 1994 I believe the KKK marched down Dallas Ave in grapevine, fully permitted, after some racial incidents at GHS got their attention.

was told 1st amendment allowed for it.

I came here to post this. They were definitely there in the late 2000s. Seems a bit more disruptive and disturbing to me than people walking down the street chanting.

  14. Don't worry, guys. I already sent my angry email to the president. He is NOT going to like waking up to that!

In all honesty, I imagine he is having a really bad time now, which gives me at least some solace. Or maybe he is as shameless as the entire GOP, idk.

  15. The saga continues! I've got the top done, except for sanding and painting shelves. Still have all the bottom doors/drawers to do, but painting the boxes moved pretty quick up top, so should have that done on the bottom by early next week.

Also, anyone have experience installing floating shelves onto tile backsplash? Is it as simple as having the proper drill bit, going slow and keeping it wet?
