  1. They're around Houston for sure, although I typically saw them more out in the Katy Prairie area. I remember being very surprised when I first saw one flying over 1960.

I was going to say he reminds me of a slightly better Chris Ogbannaya. Not flashy, but he will surprise you and very rarely disappoint.

Glad our short yardage back didn't get any carries inside the 5. This Sark fuckin guy plays scared doesn't he? Fuckin pussy dude.

He called a wide open TD to Arch's favorite target, and he chose not to pull the trigger.

  4. I was replacing the fill valve in our master bathroom upstairs. Things were going fine and I was making some adjustments to get the height right when the shut off valve to that toilet failed. By the time I got down to  shut off the water entirely, some water had dripped through a seam in the ceiling and the smoke detector attached beneath the toilet.

I've had the valve replaced, so the plumbing situation is resolved. My question is do I need to have that drywall torn out to prevent mold, or I can I watch it to see if there are any obvious issues?

One of these things is not like the others, at least in terms of political persuasion.

  6. Speaking of owls, I had a surprise addition to the neighborhood list the other day.

The 1 year-old woke up at 330 AM screaming bloody murder, and could only be calmed by going for a walk. The only upside to this sleep interruption was hearing a single scream of a barn owl overhead, not a bird I expected anywhere nearby.

  7. Our oldest got it when he was 1 1/2 a couple years ago. No sores on his hands and feet, so it wasn't really on our radar as he developed a fever and almost completely stopped eating solid food for over a week. The pediatrician found a large sore on the roof of his mouth though.

It all came to a head with the first cold front of that fall. It killed our heater so our house was freezing, the baby's fever spiked to like 103 and we spent the night not sleeping in a hotel. We took him to the ER the following day since he wasnt improving. He had rhino and adenovirus, HFM and bilateral ear infections. Nothing really to be done but supportive care.

He recovered soon after that, but it was 2 weeks of misery. Good luck...

It's our nature to think things are always bad, especially as we age, but actually, the world is in pretty good shape right now.

    • There is a much higher percentage of people marked as middle class around the world than ever before, and that's astounding considering how many more people there are today.
    • There are a higher percentage of democracies in the world today than ever before and lots of them are doing well.
    • Wars are contained to hot spots. That's actually pretty good by the normal horrible standards of mankind.
    • Our economy is, relatively speaking, pretty good. It's much better than the '70's when all the cities went broke.
    • It's better than the .com bust of the 2000's.
    • And it's way better than 2009-2011 and unlike much of the world, we had a very strong rebound after 2020.
    • Look at all the investment in the cities. New York looks like a palace compared to when I moved there in 1982.
    • And for having so many people struggling with inflation, those same people sure do buy a lot of stuff, travel, snd buy bigger houses than anyone in the '70s thought was possible. etc.

This also ignores the giant elephant in the room that no one discusses anymore because we're reasonably worried about our own country collapsing, but climate change is going to fuck all our shit up, especially since the entire world has apparently just raised their hands up in defeat.

Blackbelly whistling ducks -- one of my favorites, because they're a year-round Texas resident.  Super cool.

A few decades ago they were confined to the Valley in the US. Now, they are summer residents at least as far north as DFW.

  11. I was supposed to do Minca area and Tayrona NP with some buddies on a once-in-a-lifetime birding trip last August. Right after I committed, I knocked my wife up and decided leaving while she was 30+ weeks into a difficult pregnancy might be problematic.

Now, I'm trying to get my bros to commit to a second once-in-a-lifetime trip, this time to Manizales. Anyone ever been? I'm particularly interested in how renting a car and driving around Manizales is, as well as transportation of choice from Medellin to Manizales.

You know what pregnant women and babies actually shouldn't take? Ibuprofen. But what do you think the fucking morons who cling to this dipshit's every word are going to do when they accidentally drop baby Cletus on his head? Reach for the Advil and fuck the poor kid's kidneys.

It explains a lot about MAGA world in general.

I hate to say it, but I saw this firsthand with my Dad.  For whatever reason, he was unable to get into the Houston Fire Dept in the early 70's.  In his 22 year old brain, "his" spot was given to someone "not as qualified" because of "affirmative action."  I heard that refrain a LOT while growing up in his house.

My Dad matured over the years and went on to great success in another career, but that one rejection in early adulthood bent his brain on this issue.  When MAGA went full-on grievance politics, that DEI issue resonated with the bent piece of his brain and sucked him in.

So my Dad, Charlie Kirk, and millions of other (mostly) white people who didn't get exactly what they wanted from life in their formative years found an easy scapegoat for that disappointment and aligned with a movement that gave permission to their anger and distrust.

    At least that's my theory.

My mom worked as a high school teacher for a while and her buddy in the chemistry department blamed affirmative action for denying him a spot in med school. My immediate response to this at the time was "How the fuck would he know that?"

I'm sure he treated all of his students equally...
