Top Gun 3 happening, with the Top Gun 2 director returning

I mean, it'll get my money.  But I have to say this disappoints me.  TG2 had such great closure, from reconciling with Goose's kid who we met in TG1, to ending up with Penny Benjamin.  That's perfect.  Maybe this is a movie using the name, and it's not really a continuation of Maverick's story.  I'm down for some cool dogfighting and I don't need Maverick in it.

Anyone else's wife buy a fuck ton of clothes online (like $500+ worth at a time) because she's "going to return most of them"?  To be fair, she does return most of them, but there has to be a better way.

I wish it was just online. Someone mentioned value of time. My wife goes to the store and buys a fuck ton of clothes with the intent to try them on again at home and decide what she wants to keep before having to go BACK to the store at some point to return them. Sometimes she'll come home with clothes for me, which I ask her every time not to because it bugs the shit out of me how much time is wasted in the process. Last time I refused to try any of them on. That went over like a lead balloon.

And then she complains she doesn't have enough time to get things done.

  3. I've got a 1/4 cord of live oak from tree limbs we cleaned up from a tree last winter. About half of it is split from 6-8 inch diameter logs, and half are full logs in the 4-5inch diameter range.  All stacked in a 1/4 cord stand.

I don't remember the exact date everything was cut and split, but no later than March 1st.

Any rough idea as to how long it should take to season to be used as firewood?  I just ran out of my other rack and am wondering if the wood from last winter is ready.

I live in Driftwood, and the wood has been properly stacked for good airflow and gets plenty of sunshine.  I can't find any good rule of thumb online, but surely after the heat we had this year with very little rain it's dry enough to burn, right?

  4. No way, no how would Florida hire Jimbo after watching him drive FSU into the ground.  If anything, they are still sending him Christmas cards for that shit.  Not that they took advantage of it, but still.

I mean, I can't see how any big program looks at the job he did at A&M and goes "yep, that's my guy".  I guess if you're really cash poor and can convince him to take the job for like $1M/year while he's still a top 10 paid HC for not coaching at Aggy, and you're just looking to make some headlines with good recruiting headlines, then MAYBE.  Not that it's open, but Miss St. seems like a good fit.  LSU is cash poor and he could recruit his brains out there, but they have some really high expectations of winning.  Jimbo's style of play is so freaking boring.  Even when he was forced to give up control and hire an OC to run and exciting offense, it sucked.

Based on what what CTJ posted, it has to be an SEC program, because I can't see him convincing any Aggy players to go to the Big12 or ACC.  No reason to even make the ask.  Maybe Kiffin is on the move and it's Ole Miss?  Oh shit, that would be hilarious.

  6. Fairly expected that the most hated teams are also the most successful. Notable exception--Aggy, who somehow pulls off being hated while also completely mediocre and not a real threat in the league in any sport.

LSU also bucks the trend by being a historically successful team but only average level of hate.

Football is as popular as ever. All of my kids' friends play and parents can't get them in tackle football soon enough.  I don't get it.  There is too much science that says football is a really bad idea. My 12 year old and 9 year old beg me to play. They play soccer and happen to have really strong and accurate legs. I told them their ticket to a football uniform is to continue to build their leg strength and accuracy, because if you can kick a ball consistency through an upright from 45 yards away, you can write your ticket in college.

It's worse than you think.  Even Arky, South Carolina, and Mizzou have won division titles leaving aggy and Vandy.

Yea, but if you put it on a wall, it's like it actually happened.

    Advantage Aggy.

Which stage of grief is "spend all day coming up with new rules for NIL that seek to punish players who portal from A&M?"

That is where they seem to be right now.

It's almost like the 2022 kids got bags of cash that Aggy got no ROI on and are pissed off rather than having actual NIL deals that no longer need to be paid out if a kid leaves the university.

Aggie - Fisher - Plan 2024 Synopsis, as I've come to hear about it:

Spoilered for the tl;dr crowd that doesn't give a shit and doesn't want to scroll.

      Reveal hidden contents

So ATM panics that Fisher is going to beat a very beatable LSU and save his job for another cycle. Meanwhile, the aggie brass sees that Texas is surging towards an SEC entrance. They also have convinced themselves that waving a whole bunch of money around and telling anyone who will listen that they can pay whatever it takes for the best coaching fit, which will land them one of the big names.

So they rally the money and fire Fisher. The next thing they did was call Dan Campbell and offer him the job. That's the first sign that they have no idea what in the fuck they are doing. Campbell lets it be publicly known that he passed on the job. The only people who thought the notion of hiring an active NFL coach heading to the playoffs was realistic, the aggies, are surprised by his dismissal.

Then ATM calls every "name" coach that they can find. All of them want Fisher money or better and the same guarantees, or they don't even take the calls. Most didn't take the calls.

So then the search starts to get practical, with names like Fisch, Deboer and Traylor being floated. The money takes a heaving dump on most of those names, in part because each of those coaches has the balls to want to hire their own staff. Well, not Deboer. He didn't even need to use the aggies for leverage regarding a raise, so he/his agent never acknowledged the outreach.

Bjork, sensing an opportunity to save the day and de-risk his initial push to fire Jimbo and hire a stud, works out a deal with Stoops. The money shits on that.

Meanwhile, from day one and as discussed in real time just after Fisher's firing on this board, Mike Elko is working his aggie contacts to get the gig. Duke shows up with a big offer that he verbally accepts. The aggies come back later to talk and Elko guarantees a turnkey solution. He'll take the job for a high price and a guaranteed assistant coach and analyst money pool. In taking the role and returning, he'll keep the beloved staff members around, fire the offensive malcontents, and bring most of his Duke staff with him.

The aggies breathe a sigh of relief, as they've got their man, he's been there all along and loyal, and he's going to hit the ground running, playing catch-up in the portal, keeping the team intact, and winning in recruiting.

Only problem is that Elko really is pretty aggie. He let his alligator mouth outrun his rabbit ass when it comes to being able to cover what he claimed. The turnkey staff turns him down. He doesn't have an exciting backup plan. He's got a weak network and he's located firmly in a place now viewed as a real CFB cesspool. They're now shadowboxing trying to solve the staff plan quickly.

They're actively burning this thing down as we all watch. It's a bonfire of their own vanities. The portal candidates aren't just going to be lured by big money. Many of the big time portal guys can get money anywhere and they to believe they can get to the NFL too. The guys on campus are tired of hearing the same old shit. Recruits can get comparable NIL anywhere and at least know who their coordinator and position coaches are going to be. ATM has no differentiators other than the "traditions" and folksy old College Station. That shit is going to be super winning for them with the 2 and 3 stars who "really want to be ags" and they'll eat that shit up.

These rubes think they're heading to 10+ wins in 2024. That win total might take 2 years if things don't start trending differently asap.

The thing most puzzling to me about the whole thing...well maybe not the MOST puzzling...but definitely puzzling, is that's it's fairly obvious to anybody paying attention the entire thing needs to be blown up.  Complete roster overhaul and fresh set of coaches that weren't compicit in the culture rot.  Yet it seems like the 2 biggest priorities were keeping "key assistants" as well as the 2022 recruiting class on campus that has played a hand in going 5-7 and 7-5 the last 2 seasons.  They are treating it like just a few tweaks are needed.

Holy Christ that's the best thing ive seen in a while.  Coming off a 5-7 year, predicts Texas A&M is the next team to join the "SEC Elite".  By his definition, that is teams that beat Bama.  Fast forward 5 months, Texas has beaten Bama in Tuscaloosa, and it's all he can do to discount that game and say it doesn't count because it was in September.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one

Mack Brown's personal attorney had the field named after him.  Wasn't he the single largest football donor?

Good ol' Red publicly said our new Head Coach was hardly qualified to be a coordinator.

And I don't even have any contacts in the booster community to know all the real shit that goes on.

Texas A&M's own history, the halcyon "Wrecking Crew" days of the 1990s under R.C. Slocum (himself a former A&M assistant before taking over the program), also led Bjork back to Elko.

Yes, that and the fact that everyone else turned them down and BMDs and fans rejected his 6th choice of a middle-of-the-road 7-5 SEC coach.  When your last choices are Elko or a 38 year old position coach, that led Bjork back to Elko.
