One thing they have not drawn a distinction to is extreme weather. Polar vortexes have been mentioned since the 1700s and it was first named in 1830 so it's not like this is some phenomenon. What is unusual is the great majority of them go well to our East and only affect the northeast. About three or four years ago we had a series of Two or three vortexes that threatened us but slid East so we only got a glancing blow. This one came exactly straight for us, really the worst case scenario for texas. We are absolutely in the bullseye while the east coast is cold but not this cold.
I'm not saying that this is not linked to climate change but there's no real definitive proof that it is - yet.
I don’t know I was just wondering. I get super cold - I was here for the 80s storms you mentioned. But that alone suggests every couple of decades (in this case 40 years apart) not 70, right?
It’s really interesting to me when we can talk about what is because of CC and what isn’t under the common understanding that CC is a major factor in many instances. It would be nice to know as bad as this is, it’s not a dinosaur extinction moment for humans.

Something like this has never happened in recorded history around here. I seriously doubt it will happen again for 70 more years. Not to this degree
100 year floods becoming 10 year floods and stuff like that? Climate change, no?

Well, put me on Team busted pipe. NW Harris co, power out since 2 am Sunday, came on about noon today. Wife’s there by herself and I’m up in Tyler taking care of my dad. Pipe in the ceiling of the garage that feeds the master bath tub on the 2nd floor let go it looks like. I guess it froze and when the power came back on and thawed out there was a gusher between the floors. Collapsed the garage ceiling onto all my shit on that side of the garage. At least it was the garage and not elsewhere in the house.
Guess I’ll get to use that PEX repair kit I bought for the RV. Gotta pickup some shark bite fittings on my way back after this next storm comes through.
that fucking sucks. sorry.

Anecdotally, white women in my experience have at least three of them - each.
Volunteer on NextDoor to distribute any excess hair dryers that are placed at your door.
four here. current one from dyson it's so bad ass. two back ups that suck, and a fourth one as a fan for the smoker when we need to get that ceramic up to 800 degrees for reverse seared steaks. I used the ceramic smoker hair dryer for the hose bibs, it's the "outside" hair dryer.

Pipes bursting comes with a warm up. Be prepared.
Learn how to shut off your water main, if you haven't already. (for those is apartments, hope that you landlord is prepared to act quickly).
good point, the one that was the worst for us was on the outside garage wall so even if we had a leak it would not be the end of the world. the other was on the exterior wall of the breakfast area. more concerns but still exterior. that breakfast one was a non-issue I caught it freezing pretty quickly. it probably didn't freeze back more than a few inches. the other one was not insubstantial but still I bet not more than 6 inches. so maybe just average now that I think about it.

Lostboy 2 has been without heat since Sunday. He has power but the heater in his brand new house broke. He just moved in a week ago. Builder was no help, vendor is not answering calls. 🤬 He is in Easton Park, SE Austin, if anyone has a spare space heater he could use until he can get the heater fixed it would be greatly appreciated. It sucks to not be able to get out and help your own kids. 🥶Thanks for this board!
does he have a place, is his problem solved? does he need a place?

I just moved from insulated hose bibs to drip after unthawing with a hair dryer. Second bib took 30+ minutes but it started flowing now I’m dripping it. I had a space heater on the inside wall for 2+ days. Other one I unthawed after 10 minutes and it was on a drip all last night. So we are currently still 100% ok but that’s mostly due to uninterrupted power.

I don’t go to a Cowboy Church. The church I go to, when I go, has several gay couples. I’ve had two women kiss passionately two rows in front of me, it wasn’t even a deal, much less a big deal. I have a gay cousin, that I knew was gay as a child. I love him very much, and have reached out to him on Facebook. I haven’t seen him in 40 years, except when his grandmother died. One of the main tenets of Christianity Is that love is unconditional. I always strive to be sure that those in my Christian circle remember that.
CHIEF
I appreciate that. I'm very fond of the United Methodist Church and the Episcopals and Presbyterians that are welcoming. But let's be honest, Southern Baptists and their non-denominational offshoots from Bible Churches to Cowboy Churches and then the other non-denominational and more charismatic churches that dominate the South (and Texas) are not welcoming of others. That's really not disputable and while they certainly have the right to reject me or anyone for that matter (First Amendment is sacrosanct for all of us), it is a breeding ground for discrimination and that is why many of these congregations are viewed from the outside with such suspicion. They really can't have it both ways, at least not from the perspective of the oppressed.
Gun rights and abortion (less so abortion) are things that we can more easily agree to disagree on, but it just so happens the churches who have members adamant about their gun rights and pro-life positions, happen to also be the ones that reject people who are different. So it's really a both/and - maybe people like me don't get the gun rights and abortion issues (I argue I *do* get them) but it's also the case that those congregations don't understand what it's like to be a different color, religion or sexual orientation or what it's like to be queer. And it's really interesting to me because I think God and all of the infinite wisdom his conservative followers claim him to have made me to be an outlier because he likes difference, because he thinks nuance and complexity is beautiful and interesting. and yet, I'm suspect as are my Muslim brothers and sisters, and the list goes on. hmmm....

That’s not totally uncommon since her cell is usually off and she’s hard of hearing so she doesn’t always hear the phone anyway. Is it acceptable to call 911 or 311 to do a wellness check? Or are they so backed up with other stuff that they’re never going to get out to her? She lives across the street from Covington middle school
That’s not that far from us. 4 miles mostly mopac. Not sure about her hood if there are hills I mean it is convict hill so I assume there are. But I would be happy to hop in our truck this afternoon (after 2pm) and check on her if someone closer can’t. PM sent.

If you need to make a move make it today, more freezing precip and more ice coming tonight. We all know roads are treacherous but there may be some melting today because of radiant heat and sunshine. And temps will be at their peak obviously. Mid day is a lot better for your chances than when the sun goes down.

He should consider walking to Palmer to get warm:
double check to make sure it’s still open. Seems like it is. That’s not a long walk and safer than driving.
our house is still available to anyone. Not sure how you get here though.

Im in Travis Country off Southwest Parkway, and I’m assuming folks will get in their car and charge their phones. I’m going to be up a while. If I get a message I’ll respond and give directions with a quick call. I may leave my address when I fall asleep.

If you like conspiracy theories, people are claiming that the numbers are way underreported. Like some companies are showing areas with power, when those areas don't actually have power, etc., and are claiming that it's well over 5 million without power.
I like to keep it simple - Occam's Razor and all of that, so while I do think it's a lot more than being reported, I'm jotting it down to incompetence and unpreparedness, and the two are closely linked, and not some devious plan to cover shit up.
Shame, thinking they can get away with it, those all fit within OR’s theory.
