Anyone who doesn't think the Saudis and/or the Russians would gladly invest well into the billions on a 1% bet that Trump wins is a fool. The damage they know he'd do to America would be well worth it to them, regardless of whether he follows through on any specific promises. The problem as they see it would be that it will be hard to keep it secret and could backfire on them, not that it's a poor investment.

Seems with the increased O&G self-dependency and movement towards renewables here in the states and across the world, the Saudis would not be carrying as big a stick as they did in the past.  There's still a place for them moving forward but diminished.

This issue is very complicated. On one hand just randomly banning an app, or forcing its sale, either because of foreign data collection or them trying to warp public views is a fairly random decision fraught with inconsistencies.

On the other hand, fuck China. They ban or force modifications to US apps operating in China.

But it’s really the bigger issue that needs to get addressed. This country must do something soon about the conflict between free speech and disinformation. That’s the real legislation that is needed.

Because right now we have government forces suppressing free speech AND peddling disinformation to silence and/or mislead the public for their own benefit, either personally or government.

We need a set of rules that individuals and companies must follow when creating and delivering information. These rules must cover all environments: online, over the air, news, entertainment, opinion, etc. and these rules do  need to be based upon some basic values.

Yes, some standards need to be set.   But I think something like the Hays Commission would ensue.  They tried to clean up Hollywood and in so doing they set up their own propaganda machine, which in turn stifled a lot of artistic talent and concepts.   So, it has to be done right.

The problem is Trump has made even facts questionable.   And a sizeable chunk of people look to the Bible as the only fact.  Yeah, there's a lot to untangle here.  But then we do it in a lot of other things like football and business, so just nut up and put groups in categories and have them abide within a set of rules to stay in that category.  That would separate ONN and Fox from actual news reporting agencies.  And once those standards are set, then maybe MSM starts to lean harder back into the facts and away from the MTG type carwreck sensationalistic reporting they feel they have to provide to compete with Fox and that ilk.

I think back to the day when you stood in line at the grocer and could choose from Time, or LIFE or tabloids.  We used to thumb through the tabloids for the amusement and take home a Time of Newsweek for the real truth.   Somehow, we need to bring back that basic knowledge of truth from bullshit.   Why is Snopes so highly regarded?  How do we bottle that?

So many Trumpkins think he is this financial wizard who can lead the US economy to the promised land.  This should be a good place to start an ad campaign against that notion.  Carry it through to the fact that they have taken over the GOP to use all their donations to save his broken ass.

  4. On a personal note, I'd go back to a time when my father and grandfather were alive and in their right minds.  But only with the knowledge I have now, because I would have only been like 13 at that time.  So many questions about family history, my dad's experiences in WW2, at UT with all the others on the GI Bill.

    1) To be part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition

    2) Cadillac Bar back in its heyday

    3) The last days of the Knights Templar

    4) Pompeii before and during the eruption

    5) Michu Picchu at its peak

    You have your associations off

TikTok = Reels (Instagram & Facebook)

    Twitter/X = Threads

That is generally right, but a fair amount of politically driven content providers were trying to move their audience from TikTok to Threads.  This was back before IG got more into the reels, like last July/August.  Texas Paul was one of them.

  8. I personally like TikTok.  It's not free anymore.  It's littered with a lot of sponsored ads and also has its own marketplace started so TikTok content providers can get commissions on things they promote.

Zuckerberg tried to pull the TT people into @threads.  Hasn't been successful so far.

Interesting side note is that Trump has decided TikTok is ok now, since Jeff Yass has decided to pony up some money for TFG.  Yass holds about 30% of ByteDance (over $15 billion valuation), which owns TikTok.   Yass is the guy who gave Abbott 6.25 million to primary all the anti-voucher Republicans.   I am guessing there's a financial/political move here.  It is interesting that this has sprung from the Red controlled house.

What happened in our Texas primary, is the best possible way of picking up votes for an effort to flip the State House. If enough rural Texas voters are pissed about the school voucher votes and have started making their one, two, three hour trips for hospital care there is absolutely a coalition of city Dems and rural republicans who can get issues like public school funding and rural hospitals across the finish line while the consultants work on “BoRdeR iSSuEs” and can maintain a majority. No telling the suburb support.

Rural healthcare and school districts are the only jobs keeping some of these spaces alive. A conservative Republican poster here has already said this issue has given him major pause thinking of not abstaining from voting but voting for a Dem.

Stassneyhorn is right on this.   In my county they are already normalized to have to drive at least an hour to find healthcare.    But the voucher fight hits a lot of folks hard in the pocketbook at one time.  That tied together with the failure to invest in public schools at a minimum, while loading more and more security issues on them.    We have a retired math teacher and current school board member running for the state house seat, and our strategy is to talk to retired teachers and administrators, let them help us spread the word.     While they might not care about improving the quality of education, if it starts to eat into their athletics budget, or teachers/staff start losing jobs, then yeah, they will care.

We might not flip any seats, but I would bet they get the idea about vouchers and if we can start reining them in on that one issue, we have a chance at others.

Seriously. It’s not much more than that. Same with the Laken Riley murder. The point is that any brown person in the US is a threat to murder you.

They're saving this guy for closer to the election:

Angel Maturino Reséndiz (August 1, 1959 – June 27, 2006), also known as The Railroad Killer, was a Mexican serial killer suspected in as many as 23 murders across the United States and Mexico during the 1990s. Some also involved sexual assault. He had become known as "The Railroad Killer", as most of his crimes were committed near railroads, where he had jumped off the trains which he was using to travel around the country.

That kitchen looks like a set.

Also, the metaphorical choice of putting a woman back in the kitchen at a time when the GOP is doing everything in their power to give women a reason not to vote GOP was a nice touch.  Just outstanding all around subliminal messaging there, folks.

Somewhere, there's some GOP operatives high fiving each other (awkwardly, I presume) over the choices they made for this.

I think part of the problem is no one else wants to do it (take on the role, I mean-I’m sure you can find plenty who’d happily fire him).

I hate to bash Beto but there’s a case to be made that he’d have been a far more dangerous AG candidate than governor.  Until you can mount some kind of state wide victory you’re going to be working against the leftover Ann Richards brigade and whose corpses run the state party.

That said, if Lina Hidalgo wants to take that next step and doesn’t use it for something Federal she could do it.

Lina is a good suggestion.  Hinojosa started as a judge.

But that's what I don't understand. The more money you have, the more you should be interested in running the state the correct way. So you know, you keep making money. But these fuckers are hellbent on destroying everything...

Bexar County came dangerously close to this process too.  Cannot imagine the clusterfuck that would have been.  The votes have to be counted by a certain number of hours after the polls close, 24 I think.   Not sure what happens if they don't.  This whole hand count never made much sense, since they could only force counties to hand count in the primaries, not the general.  Maybe they figured if they could catch enough irregularities in the primaries they could force some sort of change?

Travis County DA is winning in a landslide

That's good.  He was targeted hard by the Red money in hopes to unseat him.

  17. Each county has some discretion on how they set up their poll sites.   Stassney is right about having to declare which primary you want to vote in.  My county has a card on the table by the poll book and you can either state what party you choose or simply point.   So while verbal commitment isn't required, some sort of commitment is.

I think the larger counties will set up the tables for different parties and assign quantity of machines per party at that site according to the historical split of voters in that precinct.   The number of machines available in that fashion often discourage voting due to overly long lines (this is one reason there aren't propositions on the Dem ballots, to speed up the process).

But many smaller counties just have one check in table and all the rest of the machinery is shared.  And all of those details are spelled out in a joint contract between the two parties and the county Election administration.
