  1. Makes me think of Kent State.  Except everything is reversed.   Instead of the establishment of rich white power brokers sending the police or military to subdue a protest, they backed the protestors while they attacked the police.  Maybe this is one of the lessons they came out of the late 60s and early 70s with.

You misspelled political. Which is why that discussion doesn’t belong in the CR.

While I agree there might be better places on this site to discuss this, if it were started anywhere but CR, I doubt it would ever get much play.  It would just be shouted down, and probably would have been relocated here anyway.  Just from the response of Incredulity and then later on Slorch, the odds of rational discussion being engaged by both sides was not going to happen.   That's why I started the thread to begin with.  To hopefully discuss it here and get some idea how to approach it here, then maybe on a larger scale, like Neon posted above.    So is this a political topic or not?  Maybe not, but not sure where else this could be discussed with any modicum of success.

Between blacklab's moderation of DT and posts like imma's in the babbitt thread, it's easy to see why the MAGATs run roughshod over the rest of this site.

I disagree.  This is a board for UT sports first and everything else finds its place behind that.  I have to give props to blacklab and Immamac for taking on the headache and trying to allow everyone a place to speak.   Just as easily they could just kill off CR and end a lot of headaches for themselves, I imagine.

There is no comparison at this point between the two parties. Biden’s government, while not perfect, (Hunter Biden really sucks and the Afghanistan withdrawal was a disaster) is at least respected and viewed as functioning adults that can be trusted by our allies and people who can read around the world. The other is rightly viewed by what they are; an insane, funny if not so frightening, circus run by freak-show level morons and a criminal. Trump and his spawn have done and will do untold damage to our county’s ability to function and to whatever reputation is left by the time they take power. Trump will cozy up to Putin (which is truly incredible) and the North Korean dictator. They are a threat to our democracy and safety. The FIRST thing they will focus on accomplishing is somehow getting Trump declared president for life. Fuck that sociopath and his idiot morons. We are currently under our greatest threat since the Civil War. I have no problem using all lawful and unlawful methods to protect my country from them. Lincoln suspended habeas corpus during the Civil War and I don’t see anyone complaining about the outcome. Anyone with a brain is compelled to do everything they can to stop those monsters.

I wonder how skewed our vision of the national Dem party is skewed living in a state that hasn't had much Democratic success for over three decades.   Have to think the overall judgement for the blue side is better in states that have been successfully blue for some time, like California or NY.   Where I do feel the NDC fails is in messaging for everyone in the party.  It's like they leave some states to flounder by themselves.  But then maybe some of those states don't want to play ball, so they just get less funding?    In short, is our view of Dems overall sourer because our Texas Dems have been stumbling for at least a decade?

I did a quick Google image search and found some tweets that credited it to Bruce Mehlman, a political consultant and former Assistant Secretary for Commerce under GWB. It's from a slide deck on trends affecting the political climate; something he apparently puts together annually.

Seventh slide out of 30. The whole thing is worth perusing: https://mehlmanconsulting.com/wp-content/uploads/Trust-Fall-Mehlman2024-Q1.pdf

Thanks for finding this.  There's a lot to digest there.

The trend in displeasure has been rising since '01 with the normal setbacks from the hope instilled by new administrations.  But it's interesting that there's steady rise in each Red presidency and the Dem ones fluctuate, but don't steady rise.  But the biggest thing to me is this is a charting of how people feel about the direction of the country, not so much a grade on the President and their admin.  So that rise could just as easily be disappointment in the House for its part in all this, as it is in Biden.

The problem is when the tone changes to a something that usually isn't found in sports discussions. It's fine to poke fun at Cruz and jinxing teams, but talking policy or actual political  behavior doesn't belong in the sports threads. again, IMHO.

Other times people are asked to stop discussing political angles, yet they INSIST there is no other way to discuss it.  Well, yes, there is.  The CR way and the sports relevant way; and these are hardly limited to or exclusive of Cruz.

We ahve a venue for railing on political decisions and policy positions.  It is Cloakroom.

Nobody did this, at least not any of the CR regulars.  You've just made my point.

  6. I'd like to think we're past the days of Koolaid and moving towards some fine sippin' whiskey.    That we can read the reports out of spring and fall camps without thinking "zero sum."    It's been forever since we've had a coaching staff that could evaluate talent and then develop it.  Add that to the culture change and we don't have that feeling it's all a house of cards.  Not only do players want to be part of this, but coaches and staff apparently want to be part of it as well.   Sark is the next Saban, as far as building a dynasty.  He'll do it differently, he won't be as gruff and irritable while doing it.    Watching all this come together and play out will be glorious.

Quinn obviously found himself lacking in some areas at the end of his freshman season.  He worked hard to make the necessary changes.  It could be he didn't feel right in trying to sell himself as the leader until he proved to himself he was capable of being that leader.  That's what happened this season.  Now I feel he has the confidence in himself to be that leader, to ask the team to follow him.  He wants to be genuine, not just a bunch of hot air.  So here's to hoping the new Quinn takes those steps and assumes that fiery leadership role.

What are the big offender threads in DT? I’m on the weather threads, I lurk the Ukraine thread monthly, some others that are just benign. Right wing nut cases are run off the Ukraine thread.

I did genuinely think folks were being drive by stupid on the NYT NIL thread but I was slow I didn’t immediately pick up on right wing bias against the NYT.

its sad self reflection and analytical thought and revision isn’t practiced on the right, honestly message boards used to be great for testing your own beliefs. I know reading what many of you have espoused has changed me. Hell @BrickHorn posts from way back nearly turned me into an atheist. I’m more agnostic and lazy about it now than anything. But hey that’s a long way from home.

you can read this thread and see folks are open minded I don’t get that from folks on the right.

That last sentence says a lot.  I feel those who are open minded are more concerned for humanity and others, whereas the close minded ones tend to retreat to their shells, more concerned about themselves and there legacy more than others.

I think some of that is nature and some is nurture.

And I think when times get extreme, people are pushed somehow further away from center.  Or maybe the perception of center changes.

    Dear Longhorns

Story by Quinn Ewers  • 6h

It’s always been my dream to be a Longhorn.

Every Saturday for as long as I can remember, my family would be glued to the TV watching Texas play. Just the other day my mom was telling me about when I was two years old, and we watched Vince Young and the 2005 team win the Rose Bowl together. (Apparently, I had kid-size Longhorn gear and everything.) Stuff like that just reminds me how, at my core, it’s always been Texas.

And now, 16 years and a transfer later, I’m getting a chance to create my own legacy with the Longhorns. Surreal right?

For Vince to give me his stamp of approval on Twitter … that was an amazing moment for me. What he was able to do for the program, what he’s left behind — he’s a legend. So to be in the same conversation as him in any way is an honor. But I’m also not gonna get too far ahead of myself. I’m just focused on being the best quarterback I can be.

I’m just trying to keep the main thing the main thing.

And for me, that’s always been football.

I’m a simple guy, so it wasn’t some big moment that started my quarterback dreams. Honestly, one of my favorite memories is just throwing the football around with my dad in our backyard. I know it might seem small. It’s not anything crazy like hurdling over somebody in middle school on the way to the end zone (haha, we can talk about that another time), or winning state championships, or breaking records. But I love that my football journey started with the man who introduced me to the game.

And now that I’m writing this Players’ Tribune article, I know y’all have questions. The biggest one probably being: Why UT now? Why did I go all the way to Ohio State in the first place?

    … Can I be honest with y’all?

There’s a lot of pressure that comes with this kind of thing. There was already a lot of pressure when I made this decision the first time, and now that I’ve gone through the process again, there might have been even more pressure the second time around.

I didn’t just choose to go anywhere. I chose a program I truly believe in. I chose to come home.
    Quinn Ewers

Finding a balance between inside and outside expectations has always been challenging for me. On the outside, from the trolls to the people who love you, inviting so many opinions and perspectives into a choice like this is never ideal. And on the inside, I’m always trying to figure out how to balance having a lot of confidence in myself with also wanting to stay as humble as possible in order to see things clearly.

It’s hard to make life-changing decisions when you’re only 17 or 18 years old. But this time I really just tried to block out all the noise, and focus on what I wanted for myself. It took a lot of prayer, but I’m confident in the choice I made.

If you’re looking for a messier answer, you won’t find that here. I enjoyed my time at Ohio State, and I look back on it as a lesson that’s pushed me to where I’m meant to be. I’m grateful for the experience.

This new chapter in my life and career has been a long time coming, though, and I couldn’t be more excited about what’s next for this program. Coach Sarkisian and I have a good relationship, and I totally trust him and our staff. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be here right now. It’s that simple.

I didn’t just choose to go anywhere. I chose a program I truly believe in. I chose to come home.

    So with that being said….

    We’re ready for this year.

There’s a different type of confidence in the air right now. It’s refreshing, and it’s exciting. It’s Coach Sarkisian’s second year, and everyone’s aware of the expectations. And we all know it won’t happen overnight. But we’re ready to rise to the occasion.

    As for me?

Y’all should know I’m one of the most competitive people out there. Officially starting my quarterback career as a Longhorn is a dream come true, and I’m prepared to give everything I’ve got to help this program get to where it needs to be.

    It all starts now.

    Hook ’em.

I glad I found that.  Adds some depth and character to the young man that his quiet demeanor and shyness in interviews fail to deliver.   I'd say he's delivered on a lot of what he said in that first open letter.

I know he's not complete, and he knows it too.  He's a good fit for Sark, because they both are introspective and understand being humble and self aware is the first step to self improvement.   I can't wait to see how much he improves going into 2024 and the future, whether he declares or comes back.

@bolverk --Is calling Elon Musk a racist or misogynist really political? Those two terms seem rather equal opportunity to me unless one specifically brings up a belief that X Y Z party has that in its platform? I mean it's something that gets tossed around in CR but if a celebrity/public figure (Elon holds no office in government) says (hypothetically) women are inferior to men and should not be allowed to hold jobs or drive, attend school, etc I don't consider that political necessarily but I will call him a sexist. Maybe even a sexist pig but pigs are actually useful.

The country is increasingly divided, and it reverberates onto this message board. It manifests politically, but the root issue is decency and truth.

While Donald Trump was the catalyst for this environment, it truly is an issue with information technology, social media, and regulation. Donald Trump broke the foundations of truth. He lies with every breath, and by electing him to Team B, anything he says, including every lie, is supported and promulgated as truth by Team B, and not just be online weirdos anymore during birtherism. Legacy media, particularly Fox New, but also CNN and other legitimatized his lies.

The same can be said for the entire Republican Party. When you listen to an audio recording of Donald Trump asking a foreign leader to investigate his own political rival, and there are no consequences. It hurts democracy. II hurts truth. When you listen to an audio recording of Donald Trump asking a Secretary of State to find votes for him, and there are no consequences. It hurts democracy. It hurts truth.

There is no longer a shared reality. Nothing anyone says is true anymore. No one believes anyone anymore about anything. Add in the same destruction of truth with people like Joe Rogan and the Pandemic, and it adds fuel to the fire. If a racist comedian is given the same deference to information as a medical doctor that spent their life studying disease. There is no shared reality. The loudest voice wins.

We used to laugh at conspiracy theorists and anti-vax weirdos. Now they are prominent. Legitimized.

For example, it would be like a person on this board stating sovereign citizen insane shit in the football forum. And if anyone said they were crazy, someone saying "take it to the CR" or believing the world is flat is normal and can't be ridiculed outside politics. That is what Trump/Rogan/Republicans have done to America. They have legitimized insanity. They have legitimized Nazism, fascism, racism. It's a legitimate pollical believe that only white males should have the right to vote, that vaccines cause autism, that immigrants have dirty blood, or that Epstein was a Mossad operative.

It's only going to get worse.

I get it Neon, but how do we combat it?  Or do we simply give up and hit the ledge?

This thread belongs in DT. (j/k--it really doesn't but it does not actually belong in the CR per se either)

Most of the threads in DT don't belong in DT once a day or two has passed--the topic changes into something that is ideological and does not remain a relevant evolving discussion/situation related to a current event. Not sure why more topics don't get moved that way. This board was created by people with academic know-how.

I understand.  I just didn't know where to put it where it might get some actual discussion.    It's good to see you back, btw.  Your input was missed while you were gone.

  12. That it's always "Take it to the CR" and never "Take it to the DT."

First it was the NYT article on NIL, then the Aaron Rodgers/Kimmel controversy, and it seems something else blew up in one of the other big threads, but I forget what it was at the moment.

I understand that there's a need to put politics aside and enjoy other things like sports, movies, music, food, etc. without getting into the stress of political or religious discussion.  And I think most of us abide by that in general.   But I don't understand why those rules apply only to those of us who regularly post here and have a central or left leaning perspective on things.

I used to read the DT forum on a regular basis, but haven't in years, because it's decidedly "non-politically" political.  It became a sanctuary for those who leant pretty far right on things.    So pretty much peace was maintained on the board with each group having its own safe place.

But it seems while we try to live within these rules, others have no issue bending them or outright breaking them.  Like the NYT/NIL thread.  I doubt seriously that would have gotten as much traffic as it did if it had been Sports Illustrated who published it, instead of the NYT.    Mainly because the NYT triggers the right, just like Fox triggers the left.  I won't get into the differences of how or why.  It wasn't a political thread until someone (troph, I think) defended the Times after several people had already denigrated it out of hand.  And then like clockwork "take it to the CR!!"  It's like we have no argument, we haven't read the article, so we won't discuss it.  What we will do is claim you have turned it into something political, so that belongs in CR.  But no one ever says "keep your opinions on the TImes in DT," do they?

There are those who dance on the fringe all the time trying to bait someone to disagree with them, then cry "Political!"    Same thing happened with the Rodgers thread.  That was in no way political, but it turned that way because one of the parties involved is generally known to rag on the far right.  But then it's the CR folks who are called morons and idiots and other charming phrases that are somehow the villains every time.  Somebody says something political and then when we respond, we are the ones stirring up controversy where it shouldn't be.

I'm not whining or playing the victim card here.  Those folks have rights to say what they want, within reason.  But it's an uneven playing field that we have to concede for the overall peace of the board.  And I am not negging the moderators or Imma or anyone associated with the running of the site.  I am grateful for their even allowing this.

I see this all as a microcosm of our society as a whole.  There's so much talk about how ineffective the Dems are, but they fight this same battle every day.  It's a hard battle.  We see how difficult it is here in this small community.   It's even harder on a stage the size of America.

There's a whole lot of 'the rules we write are written for thee, not me' going on, and now recently we've seen the exploitation of weaknesses in longstanding rules and understandings.  I am not sure how to fight that, it's like it's been normalized.  Same thing with propaganda and lies or half truths.  Trump did so much damage with his fake news batterings.  Gave his followers a reason to throw logic out the window.

But at some point we do have to figure out how to break down that barrier and begin to compromise and communicate.  Or do we stand up and fight since the other side won't compromise?  That's how we ended up in the Civil War, right?

Hopefully we can figure an answer here that will work on the big stage.

I agree.  He's trying to reform his image with the Austin writers as more than just a hack, so he won't be shut out of all the UT info circles.  Bohls will be the first one to welcome him back with open arms.

  14. Besides the ones listed here, there was one on a return (kick, I think) where our returner was clearly OOB, and the defender had him wrapped up then threw him to the ground at least 3 yards OOB.   Just seemed to me that should have garnered an unsportsmanlike call.     There's a lot of talk about coaching (of lack of) for preparedness and so forth.   But poor sportsmanship is also coached, or allowed by coaches.   And then it's brushed off as "intimidation" by the broadcasters/media.  Used to be that kind of play would cost a team.

That stuff and all the taunting and horns down, etc. just tarnishes the game, as far as I am concerned.   I am glad that humility and sportsmanship are part of Sark's culture.  When people do that kind of stuff, taking borderline cheap shots even, it only exhibits to me a pretty large inferiority complex.

And yes, there will be plenty who take that as arrogance, and point to the scoreboard as the sole measure of a team or competitor.    Maybe it is, but maybe that excellence in our institution is something others envy, and over time doing things the right way and with good sportsmanship pays off, reputation wise.  And that draws in the best coaches, players, fans, etc.    I doubt that any other team in FBS can claim as much hatred directed at them all year long, from so many different parties, as the Longhorns.  And it plays to their credit that they don't lash out due to frustration, and maintain composure after the game.  I mean it's got to be pretty hard to embrace all that hate and not take a swing at someone.

I'd like to see some of that return to college football, but maybe it's too late, maybe the money is too big?

Interesting, not trying to be argumentative, but in my leisurely watching CFB over the holidays, I never heard WA being picked to win

You're right in a way, but there's a ton of clickbait writers and halftime has-beens who are being edgy in coming up with all these ways UW will surprise and defeat UT.  Some of them caveat it with the "Texas is talented, but" line, then get into whatever their secret insight is.  These guys are always trying to make a name for themselves for being a bright analyst who sees things others overlook.

So, while it's not that we're the underdogs, but more like the easiest to upset.  And there's merit to that as well, since our team has stumbled in big games before more often than not recently.   I would bet as we get closer to gametime, we'll see more people picking UW to win.   They have nothing to lose.  If Texas wins, it was because they were supposed to.  If UW wins, then they look super smart in picking them.
