lol that's where I caught all my fish today.  Almost ashamed I didn't put forth more effort, but if that's where the fish are. . .

OK, shit's getting real.  I just talked to my SE and his buddy went fishing at SPI. . .and received a citation.

Unsure, I'll try to find out.

Please let me know what the circumstances were. I have a place down there on the island.

    Thanks

  2. if you guys ever make it to France I highly recommend a WW2 battlefield tour. You can take a train from Paris to Bayeux and be there in under 2 hours. We spent two nights there and it was not long enough

I highly recommend this guide, he is absolutely amazing and has 100% 5 star reviews on Trip Advisor: https://alliedvictorytours.com/about/

We did 2 days with him and it was so worth it. We saw Point du Hoc, Omaha beach and the American Cemetery the first half day. He let me make up whatever it was that I wanted to see and suggested many others. The next day we went to where medics set up a hospital in the church at Angoville au Plain, the hedgerows and where gliders landed and crashed, St. Marie du Mont, Brecourt Manor, saw the ditches and saw where Winters learned he was in charge of Easy, took the causeway over to Utah stopping see monuments and get an idea geographically of why this was such an important objective. We went to Saint Mere Eglise and learned lots about the drops. We saw where Winters and Randleman landed. We went to the bridge at La Fiere, cool to understand Purple Heart highway and that it was loosely based on Saving Private Ryan. We traced Easy’s road into Carentan the same street where the MG42 was shooting out the window as they came into town. We saw exactly where Winters got shot, the batteries at Longues Sur Mer, mulberry harbor at Arromanches. And a lot more.

We spent 3 weeks all over Europe last summer and this was the highlight of the trip.

I has a question, looking for some experienced guidance. Wife bought a cheap greenhouse kit, 6x8 footprint, thin plastic panels. Now that I have it and started scanning the assembly instructions, I see that part of the structural integrity comes from the base being secured to the floor we put it on.  Driving stakes into bare earth is one choice, but since we plan on using layered grow boxes inside, I was thinking a build a wooden floor for it and screw the frame into that.
so, boxed 2x4s with another or 2 down the middle, and plywood top? That simple?  Or should I have 4x4s on the outside, and open ended more like a large pallet so it’s easier to level?

is there treated plywood that would be ok in the elements, including snow on it for weeks at a time?  Or would some sort of deck build be better?

You know what you can't fuck up?

Cut stone. I built my garden years ago and it looks the same today

Yeah, I’m aware of the penalty. Let’s not act like it is some big secret that you could do that thought. I’ve never done it and don’t see the sense in it and to be honest, I don’t see how it would work on anything.

It's certainly not a secret, I've seen it done and it works. I've seen it done a lot better (not by me) via other readily available means  and it works damn good.

We went out with Walter Bode this morning and hammered the small Sheepsheads. Caught a few keepers and have some meat in the box as well. Thanks again for the tip. He was great with the boys. They had a very good time and already are asking to go again.

I’m glad it worked out for you guys. Walter is good with kids.

We fished with Skipper twice last week and caught near limits of trout and reds each day.

A boring friend of mine talked me into getting a motion activated sprinkler. I probably should not be discharging a firearm in the city limits, no matter how quiet it is.

Have a Heart trap, can of cat food,, Gamo pellet to the melon, SSS, it’s a simple solution

    Poor Man Can:

Tape an empty plastic soda bottle to the muzzle of a .22, and be sure to punch a bunch of holes around the circumference, plus the center of the bottom. If properly done it should work to help contain the Report.

Pretty sure that’s technically illegal. I knew a guy that used to do that and stuff plastic bags in the two liter bottle. If you are gonna do that, might as well use an oil filter.

Technically a federal felony, 10 years/$250k. But hey, who’s going to know, it’s not like you are posting it on the internet.

So apparently Zinc does not help by itself because it's a positive Ion and has no way of breaching the cell membrane. However, there is a malaria drug called Chloroquine that allows the zinco to enter the cell membrane and shut down the replcase protein that is replicating the virus in your cells.

well if this guy is correct.  I don't know shit

This is fascinating, I watched every minute. Actually understood, that Biology degree from UT pays off.

college professor for 8 years here.  I'll chime in for a bit

First off, taking online classes doesn't equal cheaper tuition. With that said, this is not a good thing for colleges and universities for many reasons. I'll try to outline a few below:

    - Online success rates are terrible.  It's bad because students don't know how to take online classes.  There are also students who take face-to-face classes specifically because they aren't successful with online, they can't do online, or their learning style doesn't match with online learning.

    - You can't just make a face-to-face class an online class halfway into the semester.   That's just not how it works, especially if you didn't prep back in December for a spring semester online class.  Also of note--yes, there are professors who never teach online because they themselves are BAD at it.  I'm already getting emails from colleagues about what sites to use for online learning besides our LMS, and our college hasn't even announced anything--yet.

    - Shutting down a college/university means there will be percentages of students who have no places to sleep, no food to eat, and no ability to do the work for the class the administrators just made the professor put online because they have either poor internet, no internet access (besides the university), or no device other than their phone.  And with their phone, they rely on WiFi.

So yeah, it's been an interesting week on Academic Twitter as people all over the country are giving ideas and suggestions because throwing an entire university into online learning for a few weeks/months isn't as easy as 6-7 figure admniistrators believe it is.

I follow your post and position from the other side.

Since you've already noted the student and faculty issues I'll take about the tech.

I work closely with many very large Universities in the US on the IT/AV side of the situation.

Many and perhaps most large Universities simply don't have the technology to run distance or remote learning effectively for all classes. That is to say it's not even close. To say nothing of a professors inability to run and process a technology from home today that they are unfamiliar with to start.

Even some Universities that promote online or distance learning struggle with the engagement due to technical issues as well as student and faculty struggles with the format.

The idea isn't new, and it has been very successful in some instances. However, even the idea of a sudden successful, overnight, issue free shift to online/remote learning at Universities for ALL classes is frankly laughable.

I teach at a university and despite an email or two on the subject, I don't think there is really a way to get it done and I have no idea how I would make a quick shift to teach my class online.

  9. My daughter is on the high school dance team. The entire team and some parents, 50+ people, have long standing plans to go on a trip to New York City this weekend.

As of right now, the school and/or dance teacher has not cancelled the trip.

On a scale of 1-10 how fucked up is that?

They could bring coronavirus back to our city.

I note that if some go, and some don’t, they’ll all be together in close quarters next week anyway.

  10. The best peel and eat shrimp

    1. Get good shrimp, jumbo or supers

    2. Using some scissors, stick the tip of the scissors into the shrimp and cut thru the back of the shell towards the tail

    3. Using a knife with very fine serrations (this is key to snagging the veins for easy cleaning) clean the shrimp. Do not remove the legs or the shell, just devein.

    4. Make as many foil boats as you need for the shrimp. Pour a little oil in the boat and season the oil with Old Bay or preferred seasoning. Add the shrimp in a single layer, season both sides generously. Then place pats of Kerry Gold or Fal butter all over the shrimp. When the wife looks at you and says “that’s enough butter” use another quarter stick.

    5. Grill over a hot fire until done, maybe 5 minutes, depending on the grill. Do not ever cook.

    6. Place a roll of paper towels on the table. Peel and eat. The butter sauce goes great on the shrimp, or on potatoes or veggies.

The shrimp are much juicer and more flavorful when cooked in the shell.

Leftover shrimp are great cold. We eat them on the beach, stick them in bloody Mary’s the next day, whatever.

  11. Trout, pan fried:

    1. Catch trout on topwater, they taste better that way. Then filet.

    2. Get Louisiana UNseasoned fish fry, Kerry Gold or Fal butter, canola or avocado oil and Ritz crackers.

    3. Place sleeve of Ritz in a ziplock, smash as finely as possible. Use a rolling pin or beer bottle or whatever. When you think you are good, smash them some more. Mix Ritz and fish fry in a storage container at about a 50-50 ratio, add some Cajun seasoning if you want.

    4. Melt about half butter and half oil in a large skillet and fry filets on medium high. Use just enough oil and butter to accomplish the task. You may have to add a little in during the process. For each round of fish, wash the pan out and start fresh.

    5. I like mine Veracruz style so I undercook mine just a bit, place it in a foil boat, top with room temp pico/salsa and stick it in a hot oven for a few minutes
