Back in August, Sling TV revealed its new day pass feature, allowing you to watch sports games or other traditional TV broadcasts without signing up for a monthly subscription. Now you can try it out for just $1, following Disney's failure in court to block its rollout.

Sling's day passes are normally priced at $5 per day, $10 for a weekend, and $15 for a week, giving you temporary access to channels like ESPN, TNT, ESPN2, Disney Channel, CNN, and A&E. It's mostly intended as a way to watch sports events that would otherwise require a monthly or year-round TV subscription, but it can be helpful for other live and on-demand shows as well, or whenever your main TV service is having a carriage dispute.

The day passes are such a good deal that they should be illegal—at least, that's what Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery believe. Both companies sued Sling in court, alleging a breach of their contracts with Sling. Disney said Sling's day passes will damage its business model, partnerships with other distributors, and ESPN Unlimited streaming package, among other factors.

On November 17, U.S. District Court Judge Arun Subramanian of the Southern District of New York blocked Disney's request for a preliminary junction, allowing the day passes to continue working as normal. The ruling mentioned that Disney's contract with Dish (which owns Sling) did not define a minimum subscription length. I assume that's something Disney will want in writing the next time Dish and Sling's distribution contract comes up, which could escalate into more carriage disputes.

The legal action with Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery is still ongoing, and could culminate in jury trials, but Sling is celebrating the win regardless. Until the end of November, you can get a day pass for just $1, giving you access to live sports and other channels for a whole 24 hours. It's not clear when Dish and Sling's current agreement with Disney expires—the last significant carriage dispute between the two companies was in 2022.

Disney representatives said in a statement, "While we were unable to obtain preliminary relief to stop Dish/Sling’s sales of Day Pass, Weekend Pass and Week Pass, we look forward to vindicating our position at trial where all the facts and evidence will be presented."
