You can connect any old external hard drive, given its formatted in the right file system (98% chance it already is)

Also 98% chance that drive is a platter drive which is slow as shit.

You can get external SSD for 100$ with 500gb.  If you need more storage, a traditional platter (HDD) is around 100$ with 3tb.

If you want performance and go SSD route, you could get an off the shelf package.  However you could also buy your drive and housing or connector separately for more choices.  The drives commonly come in 2.5" form factor or slimmer M.2 cards.

Popular choices are Crucial MX500 or Samsung EVO line. Just bought a Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" drive, with a 10$ "SSD to USB 3" connector.....plugs and plays perfectly and best bang for buck

You probably already know this, but you can delete a lot of junk from the hard drive to free up space.  Uninstall games that no one has played in the last couple of months.  You can always re-install them again if you want to play them.

Additionally, you can browse the Settings> Storage> System Storage to see which games have a lot of junk taking up storage space on your hard drive.  The space could be saved games files, screenshots or even videos if anyone uses the share button.  Games like Skyrim where you can have multiple saves files for multiple play-throughs can eat quite a bit of hard drive space.
