Just seeing James Madison making the move makes me wonder if NDSU could do the same

James Madison is basically twice the size of NDSU (22k students vs. 12k) and is also situated in a highly populated state surrounded by other highly populated states... it's a 2-hour drive to metro D.C., Baltimore, etc.

NDSU is in Fargo surrounded by several low population states. There's only one decent sized city anywhere close (Minneapolis-St. Paul) and it's 3.5 hours away.

It just seems that James Madison may have several built-in advantages, in terms of potential resources and recruiting base, that NDSU just doesn't have.

Yeah, saw the Damn Quails there when there were still some Covid precautions.  You had to buy a whole table, so we did.  Not the full experience, but still a great show and a great time.

Nice. Yeah you need to come back and experience it in its full glory.

You should also check out the Woody Guthrie Center and the Bob Dylan Archives some time when you're in town if you haven't. Also the Church Studio... those are must-sees for music fans.

I was in Tulsa 3-4 weeks ago (the day it came out, actually) and my cousin was trying to get me to come back for it.  Dead ass middle of planting season, so there's absolutely no chance.

    Bummer dude.

Have you ever been to a show at Cain's?

Thus far Waxahatchee is my album of the year.  I've been a big fan of Katie Crutchfield for a few years (the Plains album a few years back was phenomenal) and this is as good as anything she's done.

She's playing her first show ever at Cain's on May 8. I'm so bummed I'm gonna miss it because I'm gonna be in Houston for work.. ugg.

  5. The more I listen to "Only God Was Above Us" the more I absolutely love it.

I don't think Vampire Weekend will ever top the masterpiece that was "Modern Vampires of the City" but this one is right below it in my book as their 2nd best album.  It's just really really excellent.

  6. Finally cashed in a gift card for a local store that I’ve been sitting on for like 6 months, lol.

Picked up the new Vampire Weekend record (excellent) as well as a few classics I’ve wanted forever but just never picked up.

  7. Yeah really love the new Vampire Weekend.

While I liked the sprawling “jam band” vibe of “Father of the Bride” at the time, I don’t go back to it too often just because it’s so unweildy.

”Only God Above Us” feels more like a proper follow-up to “Modern Vampires of the City.”  I’m really, really liking it a lot.

  8. Can't wait for The Dude's always accurate season predictions as well.

Watching him predict a WVU win for every single game, then disappear for days after each loss and then come back and do it all over again the next week was always a treat.

J J Abrams thinks he did a great job with Star Wars and Star Trek and the studios do as well if he’s getting the keys to Back to the Future.

But I guess Timothy Chalamet and John Lithgow or Jeff Goldblum could always use another paycheck.

Well to be fair, the studios probably DID think he did well.

TFA was a HUGE hit and fans only began to drag it in retrospect. Same with his Star Trek re-boot.

  10. I'm really digging the new Old 97's record. I think it's my favorite of theirs since "Most Messed Up."

The first three tracks are classic Old 97's rockers. Also really dig the two Murry songs and also "Western Stars."

Nah man, K-State and Iowa State for sure have us on the list. They really have an irrational hatred of all things Texas to the extent that it is a boogie man complex. Baylor, TCU, and Tech as well. Nebraska, Arkansas, OU, A&M. That leaves two more schools and I have no idea where those are coming from. Houston and Rice maybe?

K-State and Iowa State fans are listing Texas as their "biggest rival?"

    Umm... I seriously doubt that.

I don't doubt other Texas schools, and forgot about Arkansas... don't doubt that one. Nebraska? Umm no. That's going to be OU, or maybe some rando team in the B1G, depending on the fan's age.

I think you're confusing "schools who enjoy Texas losing" with "schools who list Texas as their biggest rival."

Yeah I'd like to see the details of this very scientific sounding "study."

Obviously OU and Aggy are going to list Texas as their biggest rival. Beyond that, maybe a handful of Texas-based FBS schools... maybe Tech, TCU, Baylor, Houston... maybe SMU... who are the other four? UTSA? SFA? Rice? Texas A&M-CC?

Have they announced how the tiebreakers work? I know the Big 12 typically doesn't like to manipulate reveal it's math on such matters until championship week, but it's going to be hilarious if one team gets into the CCG over another despite having a head to head loss that doesn't count in the tie breaker. There is going to be an epic amount of pussy rubbing if a playoff bid is determined because of it.

    Has the SEC announced theirs?

Better buckle up because now that we have the stupid unwieldy large conferences with no divisions and unbalanced schedules everyone is going to be subject to the same tie-breaker chaos that the Big 12 went through last year.

They letting Bowman start again?  If so, I doubt they are winning much.  They had ridiculous luck last year, and I doubt that repeats.

Yeah we hear this literally every year.

Gundy just keeps "lucking" his way into 10-win seasons over and over again.

We basically have our entire team back this coming year plus we get our best WR back (Stribling) who missed basically the entire year.

Unless we have an injury wipeout year like we did in 2022 we'll be around the top of the league again.

It's fun to discuss which football Head Coaching jobs are the most desirable in the "New B12".

Seems like both the Ariz schools could be really good jobs in the future with the population growth out there. K-State fans are great so that's a quality job.  Tcu's location in DFW seems like a good place to coach.  Iowa State fans really support them and that's seems like another quality B12 job too.

Not sure what okie lite will become once Gundy retires but their fans love football.  Cougar high has potential but terrible fan support. Utah and BYU fans sure are great but not as many candidates want to coach out there.  Tech's location makes it a less desirable job.  UCF has too many SEC/ACC teams recruiting in their area to build a great roster.  Baylor needs a coach like Traylor.

Cincy and WVU just don't seem to be attractive football jobs at all.  KU is tough because you are always 2nd to their basketball team.  And without Deion, the Colorado job seems like a tough place to win.

Someone mentioned it earlier but I think the "desirability" of jobs is more about fan support and organizational commitment to football.  Obviously more fans makes a job more desirable, which is literally all the last 10 years of realignment has been about. If you have lots of fans and eyeballs on your team you'll have a seat at the table no matter your on-field results.

Then in terms of organizational commitment, it used to be purely about investing in facilities. Now it's about investing in facilities and NIL. And really NIL is probably more important at this point.

The Arizona schools may be in a desirable location with population growth, but I'm not certain that they are fully committed on the second part yet so I question their overall desirability. If the reports out of Arizona are true that basically they turned down an offer to match Washington to keep Fisch, then that's troubling from a "commitment to football" standpoint.

By those standards, I think OSU, KSU, BYU and Utah stand above the rest of the BIg 12 as we speak, with maybe Iowa State and Texas Tech right below them. TCU I think is committed to football, but with a smaller fan base than those larger state schools; same goes for Baylor. Kansas has potential but they need to show that they can keep things going for more than a few years at a time or will be back to 10K fans in the stands.

And yeah Colorado seems like it's a tough place to win WITH Deion, so we'll have to see how their first few seasons play out in the Big 12 an then (more importantly) what happens when inevitably leaves.

  16. You guys know I’ve been the Bowman apologist from day 1.  I believe I predicted a 10-win season this year…. It was looking dicey there for a bit but we pulled it off.

So I’ll say it now - we’ll win the Big 12 and go to the CFP next year.

    Boom.

I know we’re talking about Texas teams, but it pisses me off that Gundy’s team has had EIGHT 10-win seasons since 2010.

To put that in perspective, OSU has only had 11 ten-win seasons in its HISTORY.  Gundy was head coach for the most recent eight…. And he was starting QB for two of the other three (‘87 and ‘88)….

The only other one was 1984 that had a killer defense (Leslie O’Neil was the starting DE) built by Jimmy Johnson (he had left for Miami after the ‘83 season) and Thurman Thomas…. Also the starting QB on that team was Rusty Hilger, who ended up being a career backup in the NFL.

The maddening thing about those 80s teams - all three went 10-2 with their two losses all three years to, you guessed it, OU and Nebraska.

In between 1984 and 1988 OSU went 0-10 against OU and Nebraska and 44-4 against everyone else.

Pretty sure he was banged up some before the Texas game.

He was not fully healthy in any game after Bedlam.

Healthy enough to play, obviously, but his ankle limited his explosiveness after that. You could see a noticeable drop-off in speed/explosiveness after that. Still really good, but not like he was through Bedlam.
