Utah is not scared at all of USC.  Lincoln will not miss playing this team.

Looking forward to Utah in the new Big 12, even though their fans seems like a bunch of bitch-made pussies on social media.

Lightly-used grass is generally cheaper longterm because you have to replace the artificial carpet every 5-10 years.

HOWEVER, the main economic benefit of artificial turf is that you can have more events (quantity and variety) on it, in any weather or time of day, with essentially no additional cost. So if you can get paid for more events (professional stadiums) or want a heavy-use multifunctional field (high school), having an artificial turf field is better.  Basically, one AT field can replace several natural turf ones.

EDIT: Note that heavily-used grass (where you are doing constant repairs) is much more expensive.

    Ah cool thanks.

If it's really cheaper in the long-term, I wonder why (seemingly) the vast majority of colleges use the artificial stuff?

And every 5-10 years seems way more regular than just my anecdotal recall of how often OSU has replaced theirs. I feel like we just replaced a few years ago and the time before that was a LONG time ago... like before Gundy took over so at least 12-15 years, but I definitely may be wrong about that.

And man - it just seems like "lightly" used grass fields would be hella expensive to maintain year after year with water (especially in this part of the country), fertilizer, weed control, seeding/re-seeding/over-seeding, etc.; plus the fact that you need to employ a full-time grounds crew.. (or maybe they farm it out?).

I do wish we had grass just because I think it looks better and "feels" more like the football I grew up with.

I’ve rethought this. One problem with the past data on IR8 matchups- before 2024, they have never had to compete for viewers with major local powers, like UT and OU. Maybe they were counter-programmed with LSU or TAMU, and maybe not.

Next year, every time a B12 game is scheduled for Fox at 3:00, it will have to compete for viewers with games like OU-Arkansas or Texas-Georgia.

    "Every" time?

You're telling me that either OU or Texas is going to play in the 2:30 slot every single week? Not noon or 7 p.m. ever?

There have been plenty of times that a Big 12 game has been going on when, say, Texas A&M or Arkansas were playing... or just another "big" SEC or B1G game that draws significant national interest.

Again, the networks are the one writing the checks and I'm pretty sure they have the data and know what they are doing.

Think I recently saw something about grass maybe coming to DKR in a few years ???

Pretty interesting article, but it would have been nice to get into the exact economics of grass vs. turf.

Of course the grass guy claimed that it "wasn't as expensive" because of the up-front cost of turf, but I can't imagine that's true. He didn't mention how much they spend annually on water, fertilizer, weed control and then of course the expense of have a full-time grounds crew on staff.

The market tends to speak for itself in this case and so I can't imagine that grass is actually cheaper or on-par with turf, otherwise the vast majority of schools would have grass instead of it being the other way around.

I really don’t see a significant difference in public interest between UCF/KU and (from your list) OSU/KSU (I believe the increased viewership of the latter was more from time slot than raw public interest). Maybe I’m wrong, but I have to think Fox grabbed UCF/KU for a reason.

Well I mean there has been quite a bit of data posted in this very thread over the past several years that shows there's a pretty big difference, adjusted for time slots and networks.

I wouldn't read too much into a particular game selected in one random week.

Thunder makes a great argument that the B12 will have a place staked out on Fox’ main channel and not be relegated to various FSx or ESPNx cable channels.

I was looking at this year’s ratings for that slot so far. Last week, Iowa played Wisconsin (yaaaaawn) and 2.34M watched. The week before, UCF played KU, representative of what the B12 will be putting out going fwd, and 1.45M watched (50% more watches the evening ESPN OSU/KSU matchup; interesting the impact of time slots as well as channels).

The week before, Michigan played Nebraska and 4.48M watched. The week before, UCLA played Utah and 1.32M watched (ouch! For UCLA). The week before, WKU played tOSU and 2.82M watched. The week before, Iowa played ISU and 3.38M watched. In week 1, 3.21M watches Texas host Rice.

That is a channel and time slot that can deliver good numbers for an interesting matchup. Even unexciting B10 teams get better ratings than typical B12 teams. The challenge for the B12 will be in that ABC and ESPN can counter with more interesting matchups. I expect a heavy dose of Colorado there.

I mean... yeah those teams are in the league, but I'm not sure they are "representative" of what the Big 12 will be putting forward.

In terms of football brands/interest, both of them are in the bottom third of the league. KU certainly has the chance to improve going forward if they keep it going, but for now they are still at the bottom.  You see that with the OSU/K-State number.  Those two, plus TCU, Baylor, Tech, 4 Corners (especially w/ Coach Prime), WVU and Iowa State are going to consistently draw way more eyeballs than KU/UCF.

It always seems like OU plays one of their best games of the year against OSU. Even last year when OU was awful, they still found a way to beat OSU. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that OU usually has rounded into form and worked out most of their kinks by November, when OSU usually plays them.

    There's definitely something to this.

I've brought this up when OSU fans bring up how Iowa State or Kansas State has been able to knock off OU more consistently... yeah, because when that's happened it's typically been in early-to-mid October when everyone is still pretty healthy. Teams like OSU/Iowa State/K-State may be able to compete with elite teams with its starters but there's a BIG drop-off when starters start getting injured (see OSU last year).

So by playing OU at the end of the year pretty much every year, we are dealing not only with them "rounding into form" but also the normal attrition of a football season. We are almost always down a few key starters by the time Bedlam rolls around... or like last year basically 3/4 of the starters.

All of that makes sense, but ESPN is getting most of the top Big 12 games, so is Fox really going to be showing two Big 12 games most weeks?

If you're talking about FOX OTA then I think the answer is yes: the 2:30 slot and the prime time slot. Obviously they can farm out other games to various slots on FS1.

I'm not sure how the game selection goes, in terms of whether ESPN/ABC of FOX gets first "dibs" on games, but it seem like, in a given week, if ESPN gets first pick then the Big 12 game will go in the noon slot on either ABC or ESPN and if FOX gets first pick it's going in the 230 or 700 slot, depending on if baseball is going on.

But I don't know for sure - just guessing.

Starting 2024 the Big Ten has exclusive time slots on FOX at noon, CBS afternoon, and NBC prime. All other games will be on BTN, FS1, or Peacock.

The SEC and ACC (minus 1 ACC game a week now on the CW) are full ABC/ESPN with an agreement that ABC afternoon slot will be reserved for the SEC (but not exclusive meaning they could have another game on ESPN at the same time).

The Big 12 is split, however as the Big Ten has an exclusive slot with CBS in that afternoon slot that basically means the Big 12 will own that afternoon window with FOX save for the odd/occasional MWC game.

While it’s hard to predict exactly how the inventory situation will flush out. This seems most likely.

    Noon: FOX=B1G, ABC=B12/ACC, ESPN=SEC

    Afternoon: CBS=B1G, ABC=SEC, FOX=B12, ESPN=ACC, NBC=ND

Prime: NBC=B1G, ABC=SEC, FOX(after MLB)=B12 (maybe B1G if they can work out a deal with NBC to break the exclusive window), ESPN=SEC

    Late: ESPN=B12, FS1=B1G

The Big win here for the Big 12 is FOX. With FOX being locked out of the SEC/ACC and not bidding on the PAC12 and with the Big Ten granting exclusive over the air broadcasting windows to CBS/NBC to get them to play ball the remaining Big 12 programs are going to get a lot air time in that afternoon FOX slot. True it will be opposite of the SEC and Big Ten games of the week plus Notre Dame but that more than the ACC has going for it. Both will have plenty of games on ESPN2/ESPN+ but the Big 12 could theoretically have 3 games OTA while the ACC at most could only have 2 (not including ND home games) which is why I think the Big 12 will be (or already is) clearly the #3 conference.

    Awesome summary here. Nice job.

Yeah, you guys are poised to have a big second half. How Gundy does this with what he is working with I will never know, but that Bedlam game may get away from you.

Gundy does some madding things sometimes (the stupid fucking QB rotation this year) but he certainly has proven time and again that he absolutely squeezes every bit of performance out of the talent he has on the team.

Yeah we'll see on Bedlam - I put this in another thread, but I'm still waiting to see OU put together a really good performance in a true road game before I write that game off. So far they have looked pretty mediocre in their only two true road games (@ Cincy and @ SMU). Of course, as it typically happens, I'm sure they'll put it all together in Stillwater, lol.

But the fact that they are getting shuffled off to FS1 pretty frequently without a matchup with UT/OU...

    image.png.d8c8b18a73de511d9e3dbbd5c1b2742f.png

That's simply a function fewer of the legacy teams being ranked this year. It ebbs and flows. Last year multiple were ranked and they were on the primary networks pulling good numbers.

It's also a function of how the schedule has broken out... there honestly hasn't been a ton of compelling match-ups between legacy schools yet... when there has been (OSU/K-State, e.g.) they have pulled good numbers. I expect OSU-WVU will pull a good number on ESPN this weekend too.

Incredible ratings when Texas and OU aren’t involved! A future of FS1 isn’t going to work

    That's an FS1 issue, not a Big 12 issue.

OSU-Kansas State drew like 2.3mm on ESPN on a Friday night two weeks ago.

The legacy Big 12 schools draw fine when they are on ESPN/ABC or regular FOX.

I'm not saying OU is world beaters, but I do think Kansas' 5-2 record is a product of a weak schedule. Their best win is probably UCF or BYU, which is not saying much. Kansas started off last year 5-1, but finished 6-7. I wouldn't be surprised if something similar happens this year.

Agreed, but I do think Kansas is significantly better than both Cincy and SMU and OU didn't have an easy time with either of them on the road, that's all I'm saying.

They also hung 50 on Iowa State and hung 34 on us. I think the Cincinnati game was just an off game for them.

Ok yeah that's fine. The Iowa State game was at home, RRS is neutral, and they had significant turnover margins in both games.

They have played two teams with a pulse on the road and scored 20 (Cincy) and 28 (SMU). It's not like they are some unstoppable force.

KU might be worse on defense than those two, but they are significantly better on offense.

OU may very well blow KU out, but I'm just saying that playing them in Lawrence coming off a bye will be no easy task.

I am not aware of Kansas always having done this.

Yeah I mean they have been going like 1-11 or 2-10 just about every year since Mangino left up until last year.

And kudos to Texas for handling them, but it certainly helped that Bean didn't know he was going to start until right before the game.

They aren't some great team by any stretch, but they are more than capable on offense with quite a few weapons. It will be very interesting to see how they do with two weeks to prepare for OU at home.... especially if Daniels is back by then.

If Norman wasn’t just a couple of hours from DFW, it probably would be Nebraska football wise. As long as it’s nearly as local to DFW as Austin is, they’ll get recruits that don’t want to go far from home.

Yeah I mean Norman is closer to DFW than most of Texas (geography wise), and they have long recruited the entire state. Plus, for being a small-ish state, Oklahoma punches above its weight on per-capita blue chip football recruits.... not on the level of like a Louisiana, but Oklahoma does produce a good amount of P5 players every year, considering our size.  And Oklahoma is going to get almost every blue chip the state produces in any given year unless the family has ties to OSU or something and we can manage to nab them.

California is still a community property state (i.e., wife owns 50% of the marital property / earnings), and CA also allows way more generous alimony than Texas in a divorce (I would assume Oklahoma is more like Texas in placing limits on spousal support payments).

The women know what they’re doing.  Respect.

Having just gone through this a few years ago, Oklahoma is a "No Fault" divorce state, meaning martial assets are supposed to be* divided 50/50 no matter the reason for the divorce.

    * This, of course, is pending lawyer shit in drafting up the decree, but the idea is that it's 50/50 no matter what

I'm not certain the alimony situation, as my ex- and I both have good jobs and she didn't ask for any so it was a non-issue for us.

What are you talking about, a lot of high 3-star/low 4-star Ohio athletes grow up thinking of Lubbock or Lawrence, KS as a proving ground one day.  I get the BYU and Houston invites, but the Cincy and UCF thing as "recruiting" plays just baffles me.  Good thing we can quit giving a shit about any of it in about 8 months.  I'm not happy about moving to the SEC, but can't wait to get the fuck outta this train wreck.

I don't know I went down the rabbit hole, obviously we just need to win out.  But suddenly KSU and ISU are looking a bit saltier as of late.  But looking at the tie-breaker scenarios for the Big XII championship game.  We all knew them cold when it was just Top 2 teams from 10 and we all played each other for a decade+.  But this thing's a flow chart of diarrhea.  We have one slip-up game to KSU or ISU (or worse, TCU)...it gets ugly in a hurry.  Because we also don't play OSU or WVU who could, for some bizarre reason possibly be in the mix with an upset or two on their own.  Early to think about, but this season is flying by so thought I'd have a look.  I think Oklahoma drops one between @OSU & @ BYU, but they're not losing 2 games.  So this gets jammed up with all of us missing different sets of 4 opponents.  /rant

I'm almost certain that Cincy and UCF weren't added as "recruiting" plays, they were added as "market" plays. TV is driving the bus on this whole thing, after all.

As wild as this seems given our horrid start, OSU will be sitting in a very nice position if we win in Morgantown this weekend. After that, Bedlam at home is our only game against the top half of the conference - all the rest are against the new guys.
