I believe this was in the vicinity of 121 and Preston this past Friday. Protesters were blocking the intersection during evening rush hour. Even though it was pointless to do so, this guy got mad and started yelling about it. He yelled at the fuckheads blocking traffic and he yelled at the manlet cop who was doing nothing about it. That doesn't make him aggy and it doesn't make him racist. Fuck those protesters and fuck anyone on this site carrying their water.32 points

Apparently, none of them could find the stadium. It was their first time visiting campus and they had to ask for directions. Most of the people they approached thought they were homeless and walked by without acknowledging them. Those who did acknowledge them all said some variation of, "hey dumbass, did you notice everyone else walking in the same direction towards that really large building that looks suspiciously like a stadium?" They never did find it and left Austin vowing never to send their children to Texas.18 points

Blast from the past here, but the whole “kids don’t die from Covid” as a reason to not vaccinate is short sighted, imho. They can spread it, which is a reason to get them vaccinated. And Covid complications, even if they don’t die, can be very serious. There’s a lot of literature about how humans are bad at truly estimating risk, and this is the epitome of that. Death is not the only thing to avoid, and you are dismissing every other risk that can be mitigated by a robust vaccine program, both to your kids and to society at large. Anyway, the mRNA vaccines are one of the greatest scientific and medical advancements in human history. They don’t alter your DNA, they utilize a synthetic mRNA to mimic something that your body can use to defend itself against a real viral pathogen without actually infecting you. They were around pre Covid, but pretty theoretical. And they are special because they can treat many different ailments (including cancer) that this far have eluded our ability to protect against. The fact that we were able to go from a novel disease to a strikingly effective vaccine in under a year is something that we should be celebrating as one of the most amazing feats of human ingenuity in the history of the world. Instead, a large part of the population thinks they are smarter than literally some of the smartest people in the world and “trust their gut” on this when it comes deciding whether to vaccinate their kids. And the fact that someone who claims to be pro vaccine is hesitant about a vaccine that is so effective shows just how bad of a spot we are in. So yes: it is crazy to not get your kids the shots. I have a 5 year old and 2 year old, as soon as it is approved for pediatric use I’m making an appointment for them to get their vaccine.16 points

It’s a great place. It has gotten me through many a difficult time. I’m truly grateful we have this forum. Many years ago, my aunt (who is now suffering from dementia at 70–diagnosed two years ago) and uncle lived in Carrollton. Their neighbors lost both of their sons, in two separate incidents, very close in time. They were similar in age to Jake and Sam. The oldest son was killed in a traffic accident. The youngest son was the last person (body) pulled from the bonfire collapse at ATM. My aunt and uncle had given the youngest son an aggy keychain for his high school graduation. I was able to visit with my aunt and uncle this weekend, as I try very hard to see my aunt as much as I can before she stops remembering who I am. Most of the posters know I lost my dad to a sudden heart attack in his sleep in the middle of our MNC season, so my aunt was a huge part of my life since then. My uncle and I were talking about Jake’s sudden passing and he was reflecting on his former neighbors and their loss of their two sons so close together. He told me when their youngest was finally dug out from the bonfire they found the keychain that my aunt and uncle had given him in his pocket. He said that he honestly did not know how the parents got through losing both kids. God Bless all of you who have dealt with so much. You are not alone. Peace and comfort to you. My thoughts and prayers are with y’all and with the Ehlinger family.15 points

About a year ago my daughter was freaking out about how the Houston humane society was about to shut down adoptions and how they needed to get rid of all their dogs before pandemic restrictions would condemn the remainder to being stuck there for an indefinite period. She got frantic, teary-eyed, and because I was not in the position to take in a dog at the time, I had to run it by my ex, her relented after a day of reasoning from me and tearful screaming from my daughter. And so by the time I got that ironed out, we ended up with literally the last dog to be adopted out of the shelter before they quarantined. Meet Boo. She's since moved in with me. She came out of a hoarding situation where she appears to have been loved but neglected. That's why her ears are wonky -- the vet told us that one point she must have had fleas so bad, she shook the cartilage in her ear into jelly, and her lower back was patchy AF until recently because fleas had diseased her skin. She's still a bit tubby but getting better now that she can go in and out of the house where I live: no fences or car danger. She may be one of the ugliest dogs in Texas but I love her so much it's hard for me to leave her at the house unless it's necessary. She loves the car and does real well in there. And then she can roam in places like this: It's been a long, long while since I've had a dog and it sure is sweet.11 points

2nd in the country in walks (254), 4 walks behind the team we are currently playing (they have played 4 less games) .278 team batting average. 405 strikeouts in 1609 ABs which is a 25% strikeout rate. Arkansas is striking out a 26% rate and TCU is striking out at a 24% rate. Two teams that the average Texas fan who complains about the offense would point too as teams they wish the offense would be like when it is exactly like those teams. Its why we lead the nation in wins right now at 37 with a pitching staff that is 2nd to none. Today Texas had 13 base runners (9 hits and 4 walks). TCU had 7 base runners (6 hits and a walk)... Baseball be like that sometimes. Just couldn't buy a hit with runners in scoring position along with a plethora of base running mistakes. There is nothing wrong with this teams offensive approach other than Zubia takes too many pitches at times (but is also why he is 2nd on the team in walks with 40) and Eric is mind fucked at the plate because he can't by a hit and his confidence is shattered due to the fact that Pierce tells him to bunt on at least 50% of his ABs it seems like. There are 5 guys on this team getting on base at higher than a .400 clip.. That is damn good.10 points

Obituary. Services 12PM, 12 May, Riverbend Church, Austin Thoughts and Prayers for the Ehlinger Family. AUSTIN, Texas – Arrangements for a Celebration of Life service have been set for Texas Football linebacker Jake Ehlinger, who passed away Thursday, May 6. Services for Ehlinger will be held at noon on Wednesday, May 12, at Riverbend Church Home for Hope, located at 4124 N. Capital of Texas Highway in Austin. In lieu of flowers, the Ehlinger family is asking that donations be made to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Those looking to do so can donate on a secure webpage by clicking here or by sending to Steve Vittornini at 478 Live Oak Lane, Spicewood, Texas 78669. University of Texas football player, McCombs School of Business second-year finance student, Phi Gamma Delta fraternity member, and a member of the Texas Silver Spurs, Jake was known for his larger-than-life joyful personality, grit, selflessness, and generous spirit of enthusiasm and encouragement. Jake never knew a stranger; whether you were meeting him for the first time or were a lifelong friend, he made you feel like you were the most important person in the room. He had the biggest smile and never judged a soul, spending his life spreading joy. Jake was the middle child who was the glue of his family, with the ability to turn tears into laughter in a moment. He was his dad’s little buddy, and they shared an unbreakable bond. His father’s spirit was alive and well in every part of Jake’s life. Tragic life circumstances created a unique opportunity for Sam and Jake to uplift and empower each other. They were each other’s biggest fans. Their mother, Jena, as well as their sister, Morgen, were the loves of Jake’s life. Everyone will miss his giant hugs, but no one more than Jena and Morgen. Jake was a gifted and fierce athlete from the start and maximized his non-stop motor, no-quit attitude, and willingness to rise to any challenge. Captain of the Westlake football team and a well-respected linebacker at the University of Texas, Jake fulfilled countless dreams at both schools, including sharing the field with his brother, Sam, who played quarterback. Westlake Head Football Coach Todd Dodge said, “Jake Ehlinger’s legacy will live on forever in Westlake Football. His pure toughness and willingness to do anything for his team is unmatched in the years that we’ve been together at Westlake.” Longhorn Football Coach Steve Sarkisian said, “Being a Longhorn meant everything to him, and he truly embodied all that it means to be one. In the short time we were able to get to know him, he always was a joy to be around and gave everything he had in workouts, meetings, practice and in life.” Jake’s friends meant the world to him and were a lifeline of entertainment and acceptance. The family cannot thank his countless friends enough for playing Chess, watching movies, hunting, listening to music, boating, praying with him, and loving him. Before sports and his academic and social lives, Jake valued his family above all else. Nothing was more important than his mother, Jena Cissel Ehlinger, his older brother, Samuel George Ehlinger, and his baby sister, Morgen Adeline Ehlinger. To honor Jake’s legacy, we hope to go forward with even a portion of the joy that Jake brought us. Services for Jake will be held at noon on Wednesday, May 12 at Riverbend Church Home for Hope, 4124 N. Capital of Texas Hwy. In lieu of flowers, the Ehlinger family is asking that donations be made to Fellowship of Christian Athletes c/o Steve Vittorini, 478 Live Oak Lane, Spicewood, Texas 78669 or on a secure webpage at: https://my.fca.org/?=name+stevevittorini They will also let everyone know about other ways to honor Jake very soon. Thank you for your care and concern. The family is beyond grateful for your support. “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.” - Philippians 4:13 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” - Ephesians 2: 8-9 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” - Psalm 34:18 https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/austin-tx/jacob-ehlinger-101840939 points

We have entered a period where everything is scrutinized to the nth degree and people feel empowered to speak against the slightest of anything that does not “fit” their agenda. And people are so sensitive today that others cave in to these demands. Common sense evades so many people. Disney recently revamped Snow White’s Scary Adventure ride at DW to make it more kid friendly so as to not “scare” then and make it more relevant. People are still pissed about the ride in saying that Disney still missed the mark because the Prince kissed a sleeping Snow White without her permission! “It teaches sexual aggression against women” they say. It is a freakin fairy tale! Get a life!!! The University did their study of the song and made a statement. I hope that they stick by their words.8 points

The simple solution for those getting killed on labor is to pay a guaranteed salary with bonuses on sales performance, with a posted no-tip policy and food prices that reflect cost+. This is actually an industry with real competition where the "market" will pick the winners.7 points

What an impressive weekend: Top Ten opponent, hostile crowd, solid pitching, dangerous hitters, and a regular season league title up for grabs. A sweep would've been sublime, but I'll gladly take a series win against a potential super regional host. Anyone not on board with this team before this series should be now.7 points

Mrs. Brat’s birthday was on the 8th, so it should have been a big family weekend. She got some cards & phone calls from all the kids, but nobody came by (they are still somewhat Covid shy) She was very touched when our middle grandson made this Heavy sterling silver cross from the scrap spoons I gave him months ago. (He has a little kiln furnace he likes to mess with as a hobby). I supplied the new chain & bale. She is very proud of it.7 points

Both are wrong, but yes, intent and circumstance do matter, in this case, and in the aforementioned being fucked in the ass. Trump spying on journalist investigating his alleged corruption is pure fascism. Obama spying on journalist to see who was leaking government secrets is authoritative overreach. They’re not the same thing. It’s not the same ballpark. It’s not even the same motherfucking sport. Equating them as such is disingenuous and lends credit to questions of underlying bias. OP, this isn’t Texags, use the existing threads.7 points

I have been a bit hesitant to post anything else in this thread because it is solely about the Ehlinger family. But ... Reading the outpouring of love and support in this thread, and having to live the horror of having a child taken, the inspiration comes in the most unusual ways. Today, I was scheduled to give about a 30 minute presentation on mental health/eating disorders and the legal community. (My daughter died from eating disorders after fighting it for 7 years ... and before you say, what the fuck?... eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses [only behind opioid addiction] with one person dying every 52 minutes]). The presentation is going to be shown during an international conference in June. I admit that there was a certain ... "emotion" missing from it. And then, I began to think of Jake's mom, what she surely must be feeling, that is if she is feeling anything yet, and in the midst of my despair and flashbacks to my pain, for some reason, I found new strength and resolve. Good God, what that incredible mother is going through right now is inconceivable! It filled me with greater resolve ... and purpose. And maybe.. . just maybe, My words will touch others. Jake's mom will never know about this. But one day, I hope she feels it ... she feels in her heart, that she and her beloved son, made a difference. That she and her son saved lives in the most unexpected ways. No words for her ... other than, she is not alone. I now know of so many other moms and dads who had a child ripped from their loving arms. But, from the senseless... if we can find reason. If we can save even one life...7 points

Made a quick trip to local nature sanctuary to look for Hognose snakes. Walked around for about 45 minutes and decided I need to get going because of Mother's Day get together. As I am walking out, I see this brilliant orange hognose. Several people stopped to ask about the snake as I was handling it and trying to get photos. All the kids loved seeing it. One of the prettiest ones I have caught.6 points

I think the general point that the federal government abuses its surveillance and investigation powers under both parties, historically, stands. Like everything, though, the Trump Administration turned the evil up to 11 and tried real hard to break off the knob.6 points

The more I think about this the more it feels like my relationship to the Astrodome. At first I was an uncompromising partisan to keeping it somehow, because so many of my memories were tied up in it, and even if those were mainly colossal heartbreaks, they were mine, and every other Houstonian of that era. Now, I really don't care. There is no valid argument to keeping the Dome around other than sentimentality, and if people can't go inside, and if it looks like shit in there anyway, why would people want to go in? But the main thing is, nobody under about 30 gives a single fuck about the Dome, and that number, already at about zero, will continue to drop as time goes by. In national eyes, we look a little weird for hanging on to this white elephant of a stadium, and while I don't give a shit about looking weird, it is also pointless. With the Eyes, we've come up with a solution that any student of history would recognize as "Separate But Equal" bands, and that shit just don't fly any more. We can rail against the band kids, the athletes, the university admin all we want, but this is starting to become an albatross. I hope sincerely that maybe things will change in the next few years, and the Eyes will become beloved by all, and I am in favor of giving it time, but at this moment, I am not optimistic. A National Championship would come in handy, of course; and then the Eyes could be featured as a centerpiece of some kind or racial healing narrative the media would buy into.6 points

I have no party. I have a lot more to gain from R policy than you do and I've voted R for most of my life. If you really think that the D side is even remotely fucking close to the bullshit that today's R party is pulling off, I don't know what to tell you. I suppose I should ask for some of your drugs because that's some potent shit you're on.6 points
