  1. Enough bitching, enough sitting on the sidelines, CDC isn't doing fucking dick but we can! Introducing Surly Horns Burnt Ends NIL Program. This is how we make a difference, if we can get enough interest and hit the numbers that we forecasted, that is a huge step towards getting at least one position group taken care of (possibly two pending interest and people actually putting their money where their mouths are) with the hopes that others will follow with other less appreciated position groups. Bijan, Card, even guys like Jamison and Overshown won't have issues getting paid when the NIL is fully rolled out (hopefully fucking soon, looking at you @closetojumping)or when CDC gets his head pulled out of his ass (Doubtful, fucking moron). Next Steps, I gauge interest through this article and see what the financials actually look like (You won't be charged dick till this shit actually gets rolled out), we get a liaison in the TE room to help facilitate scheduling, we get this bitch through compliance (Don't think this should be an issue but....), then we start to roll it out to the TEs! All the profit is going directly to the TEs, and the website will be handling the money (No Ketch bullshit). We will mail everyone's Cups and stickers and shit once things have been rolling. We will need some help designing a logo (paging @TreatyOak). This is a great opportunity for us to have some fun with the NIL, get some kids some cash legally and above board, help improve TE recruiting and keep talented TEs on the team and out of the portal. If you have any suggestions, questions or grievances shoot me and @immamac a DM. This is how we help! Burnt Ends- NIL Program.pptx View full article

  3. I own a full-service commercial solar business in California and have an installation partner based in Austin, TX who we are planning to buy. If you guys living in Texas can identify building owners (including UT campus) who are Texas alums and wouldn't mind going solar, we can pay the players a lot of money ($50-100k per site) for a cameo. Perhaps the player does the unveiling, signs autographs and take pictures, so the building owner gets to keep them as souvenirs or hang them on the walls. The building owner doesn't pay a dime for anything. It would be less work for all involved. I am just throwing it out there as an option that I can support.

  6. I love the middle finger from one the board’s resident wackos. Hey @PilotsError, you dipshit, their open stance against homosexuality in their fucking handbook where kids can also be expelled for having sex makes them a toxic school to a bunch of liberal as fuck universities in the Pac 12 like fucking Berkley, Stanford, and every public cal school. This isn’t a controversial political statement by me, it’s a fucking factual statement. Or did you want to argue that a bunch of California based schools are indifferent to socially conservative points of view?

  7. I hope people realize this is tightly coupled with Surly Horns and the Surly Horns Podcast. This is a media promotion play that happens to be funded through a normal interaction on the site. This is exactly like I said it was, we have always wanted to pay players to do things related to and for the surly community, but haven't been able to do it legally. Now we can for our own benefit and for the benefit of the business entity that is Surly. More traffic to the site, more discussion, more content etc. This isn't paying someone 10k for a signature on a napkin that you throw in the trash can.

  9. There are so many poorly drawn conclusions, bad takes, tedious lamentations, and misinformed accusations on this thread that it's hard to fucking keep up with anything right now. And that doesn't even include the one guy showing up to tell us all that he's about make $50million in a SPAC. Bizarre. Just fucking stop for a minute. Christ. All of the low energy, low information whining of "won't somebody please do something!!!" as it pertains to NIL, from people not actually doing something, isn't helpful. A group of us have been working on a better understanding of NIL and Texas. What is it? What can and can't be done? How does the process work? What's the optimal solution? What can be done now? Etc. We've pulled together resources if someone is serious about learning more and not going to post or pass shit randomly on. This goes beyond the semi-anonymity of a bulletin board. We've come far enough along that I can at least provide some informed thoughts and some direction. @immamac is going to provide a resource center or marketplace to help out. Here's the net-net ahead of that. 1) There's interest in building something long term that could bring players and money together every year into perpetuity. We've built up damned near a completed business plan on it and it's circulating beyond this board. The big problem is, someone would need to run it. They'd need to have a history of operating a company, experience, preferably, with UT and the AD, and a start-up background/connections. They'd also need to be an extrovert because of the nature of the beast on this one. I can't do it. I'm way out over my skis right now taking on other stuff and this is tipping me into a tumble if I go any further. Got a blueprint for someone who could do it, and likely access to capital, to boot. DM me if you know someone that might be a fit. Otherwise, this sits on the shelf until potentially forever, which is fine, I guess. 2) In the meantime, other shit can be done, leveraging the creative work and research that's already been done and some of it is just waiting there to be taken. Here's the thinking: A) Agencies are entering the fray. Sports agencies and agents, marketing and ad agencies, you name it. They're more or less necessary. Sports agencies are building marketing arms, and they'll take care of the big names, but less than a sure thing is likely left in the cold. Hudson Card has an agent already. Montana Fouts has an agent. The big names aren't the worry. Anyway, we have access to an agency that anyone here could use. If you want to get money to players in any form, we could do that right now. We have boilerplate influencer/sponsor contracts, teams with digital, event & PR, social media, branding, etc., expertise. Feel free DM me. B) The process is as follows: company/entity reaches out to player directly, makes an offer and tenders a contract. Players signs contract. Contract goes through compliance. If approved, player lives up to deal in the contract and the player gets paid. If the nonsense with compliance gets fixed, this is all fine. The premise of the program trying to claim that burnt orange is in scope of what's off-limits is utter fucking bullshit and anyone claiming that up to Plonsky and Crystal Conte should be fucking fired if they attempt to continue to parrot that. Fucking wrong. C) Autographs don't have to go through compliance. Anyone can organically provide something for a player to sign and the player can then get paid. This is protected in the state legislation. So, if you take a napkin, or a jersey, or a woman in a tank top up to a player and pay him $1 or $1million to sign the napkin, jersey, or woman's cleavage, you can do it. D) There are over 50 use cases we've already worked through. We want to start putting them to use and show the credibility of them in action. We have access to players on every team within the Texas realm. We can reach whoever we need. If folks want to do something, let's discuss. Feel free to DM me. E) Opendorse is trash and will take 15% of any deal conducted through it. The UT leadership in athletics sending players there to fend for themselves is fucking negligent and someone should be fired for their insouciance. There is nothing there for us or players to leverage. Ignore it as a resource or hope. F) A major recruitment right now has some ability to be influenced with NIL at Texas if something gets done. Specifically to the point about it not being an issue for Hudson Card or Bijan Robinson, both of whom will make well into the 6 figures this fall (this is confirmed), it's about other positions. In this case, if DBs at Texas are making bank, that puts the Texas NIL argument for this signing period up against anyone for at least one key target Texas is in danger of losing. Other entities are going to do what they can as well. Surly is working on something and mac or @RGBIII can feel free to elaborate. But yeah, pass the word, pass around the hat, whatever, shit can get done asap if people want to put their money where their mouths/keyboards have been up to now. DM me, DM @SydneyCarton, happy to help or point in directions. Sydney can post more on types of NIL use cases that anyone here can explore and we should. I'm tired of typing.

  10. Ok, so the topic of use cases can be long AF, so I'm going to give folks a high level summary of the possibilities we've examined and fleshed out, and if someone is interested you can DM myself or CTJ and inquire further about details. Some items I'm also going to gloss over because they're going to be specific and pretty intuitive to the extremely small audience to which it makes sense. One example being "Product Endorsements." Well, if there's the 1 poster here who has a notable clothing line and wants to sponsor some athletes to wear their gear, I don't think that person needs a fucking explanation from me on how it works. Ditto the 1 dude posting here who owns Car Dealerships. So Ill probably write out more things that make sense to a bulk of this community. I’m also sure @immamac will paste this in whatever compendium guide he’s putting together on some forum at a later date. Opportunities: Affinity Groups: Affinity groups often have some of the most aggressive niche marketing we see, both digital and old school print, and they also are very active and aggressive with Meet & Greets, Happy Hours, Golf Tournaments, Networking Events, etc. Thing Mortgage or Real Estate Companies. Anyone within or adjacent to these communities interested in pooling resources for player appearances makes sense. NFT: Non-Fungible Tokens - Phil Knight has already done this twice for one oregon player to the tune of six figures. It’s not as complicated as many think, but I’m not going to run it down here. If someone is interested in this, you can DM myself or CTJ. It probably doesn’t make immediate sense for this community. Charitable and Social Work: Ton of opportunity here, but probably not this forum. But if anyone has or runs an existing non-profit interested in possibilities, feel free to reach out. Long term, this is a big deal, but it needs infrastructure in place. Specific Use Cases: Appearance Fees: Kind of self explanatory. I’ve written up tons of details for this, but on top of autograph sessions, other opportunities exist like Restaurants, Happy Hours, Car Dealerships, Conferences, Festivals, Business Openings, etc. My favorite fun one is sponsoring a team of athletes to compete in a BBQ cook-off or Chili contest. There is a lot of room for creativity here. Product Usage: Probably not for surly but if you run a company with specific services or that manufactures an actual product for sale, this is for you. Wellness Groups (health spas, etc), Clothes, Sports Equipment, Educational Equipment (laptops, tablets, things students use), Healthcare and Cleanliness (Sunscreen, Shampoos, things athletes use), Food and Drink, Personal Training, Transportation, etc. Media: Podcasts appearances (or creation), Social Media influencing/mentions/, Facebook advertising, Twitch/Steam gaming parties, Subscription Based Chat, Radio Interviews/Appearances, Website AMA’s, YouTube Guest Appearances, etc. Print Media: Sponsored Content, Advertorials, Subscription Newsletters/Daily Emails. Again, this is top level stuff. If any of this rings a bell or strikes a chord with someone, these have all been fleshed out quite a bit in detail, just throw one of us a DM.

  12. Man, I really have to give y’all credit for fighting the good fight. I have checked out. Just fatigue from the stupidity has taken it out of me. That and fatigue from trying to find a job for over a year (finally landed something). I just don’t have the energy to read all the crazy stories of people who don’t believe in science. It’s exhausting dealing with these folks.

  13. Compliance is not going to be in the way for long, provided everything submitted is clean. Changes coming, according to people that can make them. Trust me when I say the damned near no one is doing more to ensure that Texas gets its shit together and wins with NIL than Bobby Burton. This whole site needs to change its tune on that issue. The dude is putting in work. IT is going to have some big things rolling out shortly. Surly and IT are complimentary in different ways and there's some level of coordination in trying to slice through the NIL gordian knot without UT's interest or help. Now, Ketchum cutting deals to sponsor players before he's even gotten the sponsorships funded? That's the kind of bad shit that we should all be worried about getting over and above before it is the story. Ironically but unsurprisingly, he's the guy already getting things through compliance because of friendships. Also, in for $50/monthly.

  14. There should be a button on GoFundMe you can push to let them know you've donated thoughts and prayers in lieu of money. "Tom has donated 2 virtual bootstraps and 8 thoughts and prayers to H Scott Apley." Also I'd leave a comment letting them know I'll keep fighting for them by voting for politicians who support expanding socialized healthcare in remembrance of them. "I wish I could give some money to help out, but in his heart, that's not what Mr. Apley would have wanted."

  17. Maybe this is a moment of weakness because we buried our pet today along with getting the news that my father has cancer while he is in a shitty hospital for blood clots in his lungs. But I saw it as a man who is contrite. Who realized very late that he listened to the wrong people. Instead of silently coming to this realization, he decided to reach out with belabored effort to hope and plead that people take care of themselves and their families. Hoping that his regional accent will help with his bonafides and hope that someone, anyone will listen. This man put it out there. He won’t walk it back. My brother nearly died from Covid. He denied it, acted like an ass, tried to shout down people and used all the Russian right wing talking points in the process. He would strut through the front of a restaurant and say “no thanks” when they asked him to mask up. He was proud of this behavior. His daughter, former SIL, grandson all got it. His wife and other daughters got it. His SIL family were racked by it. He nearly died. He was momentarily contrite. He even admitted it wasn’t a joke, it was rough and he was fucked up. Afterwards, he started walking it back. He continues to prescribe cures, tell everyone about it and tell me, how it doesn’t harm children. He was irritated when I declined to allow his previously infected and non vaccinated kids to visit. My kids are not of age, his are. They consider themselves good people cause they vote R, got to church sometimes and post right wing hate/lies on the Internet. They think this makes them good citizens. It does not. That is my brother, I love him, and I hate him. This man, is what I wish my brother could be. Willing to broadcast his fuck-up and try to help others. So to him, I have a heart. To the Republican fuckhead that died, I only feel for the cute kid. Watching my son (9) silently helping me dig a grave and my daughters wails (7) broke me today. Even if the 4 yr old stepping on the body in the grave so he could try to help me bury the critter garnered a little chuckle.

  18. 1. You CAN transmit if infected… CAVEAT: if you’re vaccinated you’re MUCH less likely to get infected in the first place (so obvs can’t transmit if not infected). Also, if you are vaccinated and get a symptomatic breakthrough infection (rare, despite what you read), you’re going to be LESS likely to transmit than an unvaccinated person due to your body fighting it off quicker. 2. The vaccine indeed doesn’t make you bulletproof. If you encounter enough virus it may be enough to overtake the antibodies you’ve got, but that doesn’t seem to be the majority of the time. There were always going to be breakthroughs. It doesn’t mean the vaccines don’t work.

  24. I don't wish him dead or suffering, but just showing me video tape of one person doesn't really do that much to move me. He says he believed the media and opted out of a vaccination. Now he's remorseful at infecting his family as he wallows on his death bed. Murderers and rapists exhibit the same behavior. This guy may have infected and even killed many other people. It had to happen to him in the most horrible of ways for him to give a shit. Maybe some grandma is gurgling and gasping in agony. With Delta, maybe a high schooler is. He shows remorse. Okay. Give him a point in that column. I still despise him. I don't wish suffering on him or death, but I also don't give a shit because my wishes don't matter either way. Boo hoo, you miss your daughter's wedding. Had you acquired the disease a month later, maybe you could have infected everybody there and had an even more tearful moment of regret. It will take more than cheap emotional appeals to change my judgment. Advertising in general and the Hate Engine have led me to this place. I try to see what is really there. What is really there with this guy does not move me much.

  26. Doomsday preppers weren't prepared for shit - they couldn't handle a fucking pandemic. They bragged about their 10 year supply of Jim Bakker buckets of mashed potatoes, their impressive armories, their expensive bunkers with thousands of dollars sunk into air filtration, all of their solar panels and off-the-grid stuff. And it turns out that a simple piece of cotton on the face, being told that Chili's was take-out only for the time being, and cutting off access to Super Cuts was all that was needed to bring these motherfuckers to their knees. Not the fucking Russians. Not nuclear war. Cutting off access to Super Cuts and dining in at Chilis, and a little piece of cloth, and these motherfuckers crumple to the ground in the fetal position.

  28. My 10 month old daughter went in for a follow up from her surgery 1 month ago on Monday. Doctor decided he wanted to do a balloon dilation of her esophagus today, so we had to do a rapid test at the hospital on Monday to make sure she didn't have Covid. Got a call 3PM on Tues that she tested positive. She, nor mom and I, haven't been around anyone or know anyone who has it. I was pissed. Called her PCP, went in and got another rapid and a PCR test done. Both were negative. Mom and I both negative (we got it last fall when she was 2 weeks old and in the NICU). She got her dilation done this morning. Poor girl has been under anesthesia 6 times in 10 months, #7 will be next friday, and she's had at least 15 Covid tests. Can't catch a break.

  30. We are the Republic of FAFO. Our motto is “semper stupid,” and our flag is a Jolly Roger with a clown on it. When it affects everyone else, I don’t give a shit. When it affects me, only then do I care? That kind of person is called a sociopath. It’s worse than that. Imagine that we had a fundamentalist religious movement here (something like, I dunno, radical Islam), and its followers irrationally and fanatically chose to take actions that resulted in thousands upon thousands of Americans suffering gruesome injuries and death. And they inflicted this suffering upon our country in the name of their twisted beliefs. We would call those people terrorists. And we’d be right. These people are part of a movement that is actually and actively harming my country and my countrymen. The hospitals are full of their victims - 100s X more victims than they created on 9/11. As a society, we should treat them like what they are: murderous fanatics destroying our society and killing our families, friends, and neighbors in the name of their psychotic faith.

  31. All valid points. The guy is remorseful that he may not walk his daughter down the aisle but he didn't care enough to protect his daughter and son by getting the vaccine. His selfishness about vaccine lies was more important than protecting his kids. I don't know who wins Dad of the Year, but I know who doesn't deserve it. The hero is the dad who took time to learn about the benefits vs risks of the vaccine and ultimately decided to protect his kids by being vaccinated. that guy won't be on a video but he's the guy down the street taking care of his kids.

  36. So I just tested positive. For those not keeping score at home, I got J&J in March and a supplemental Pfizer last Monday. Started feeling off on Friday (after extremely mild post-vaccine reaction) and realized I couldn’t smell or taste anything. Two vaccines and delta (I’m assuming) don’t give a fuck. Probably still to early for Pfizer to have any effect, but still. Have felt achy and sinus pressure for a few days, but nothing too bad. Add me to the case pile. Hopefully not the hospital or body pile.
