  4. the pearl-clutching over this is fucked, and here’s why: 1. if he gets a big oc opportunity this time next year, some really cool shit happened in 2022 with both our wr room and our offense, which probably will… 2. be an asset for our 2023 recruiting during a banner in-state wr cycle, and will also show that… 3. you can move directly from wr coach at texas to a bigtime coordinator job, which is a great thing for finding his eventual replacement. also… 4. chill the f out, people.

  6. Another lame ass fucking semifinals and pointless ass season just to see the same bullshit at the end. Don't ever say college football is better than the NFL. They kick it up a notch come playoff time. And their regular season actually has meaning. 90% of college games have zero impact on anything and then get to play a glorified scrimmage after the season. Play a whole season to see the same exact group of teams play. the talent is so unbalanced it isn't even funny. I can't think of a sport right now as backwards as college football. Most sports, the playoffs mean it gets tense and exciting. Not college football. It's time for Cheez It and Mayo Bowls. I get the NFL and other sports has dynasties but at least they have to battle it out to get there. They can't just load up on a whole roster of 4-5 star talent and just out talent 95% of their games. And no, just because these semifinals games suck, doesn't mean we should not expand. Under the BCS, the national championship would be Bama/Michigan, which Bama wins by 3 scores. Georgia would have been left out. Expanding could open up recruiting. Now days, kids know if you don't go to Bama, Georgia, Clemson, OU, Ohio St, your shot of playing in the playoffs are slim. We'll see if the NIL can somewhat level the field but I doubt it.

  12. I’ve got to be pretty high up there as far as college football fans are concerned in regards to committed time and resources. But I lose a little pleasure in it each year and that will likely become more progressive. The playoff is one reason. It does smother all the other bowls that people say don’t matter. They have to me. In years past I’ve watched a very large majority of them. This year I barely know who plays or when. Part of that is the emphasis on the playoff. Part is opting out. And whatever the hell you think you watched tonight, it wasn’t the damn Cotton Bowl. Stupid to even call it that. Why are Bama and UGa at the top and year after year? They cheat their asses off in recruiting and the damn talking heads turn a blind eye. We are now entering an era in which the have nots will become more insignificant. Over the long term, you simply can’t compete with teams that have 5 stars backing up 5 stars who then poach other elite talents to fill in thin spots. And you have to think the lack of ethics has never been more impactful. The SeC objective of ruling the world has done quite a bit in killing other teams and conferences chances of competing. Money is more important than ever. Some can’t compete with other alumni bases. Some won’t be able to compete due to their conference affiliations.

  15. Yeah, things suck right now. I'm sure us sucking has a lot to do with that, but I really think the old days -- the old conferences, the bowl tie-ins -- were better.

  16. At the risk of getting political: Jlaw is not the shrill left, she’s literally saying the world is going to end. In dead ass terms, and is told: you need to message that better. The fact that people see that as “the left” is telling in its own right. The political left is largely spared in this movie (and there are plenty of things that could have been done) in lieu of roasting the Media. Cinematically, she creates the plot, then serves as the Greek Chorus, serving as a de facto 4th wall break “Is any one else seeing this? What the fuck is happening here? Am I losing my mind?” She’s supposed to be us, just watching the world fall apart in the most absurd way. Then falling into resignation and acceptance that allows McKay to tie up the plot.

  17. Back from the ranch and back into the civilized world with functional internet to get caught up on Surly and all of my other websites. I think that big fucking pig that keeps coming to our feeder each night has a camera inside the house and knows when everyone is in bed asleep and it's safe to come get some corn, even with the porch light on. Also, my cousin brought his younger kids out for a couple of days - ages 10 and 6 - and they had a blast, even if the weather sucked. They got to sit in the blind a couple of mornings and then in the afternoon shot the shit out of the 22 and their BB gun and paper targets and then in the evening played "poker" for a couple of hours before bed. The older one was big enough to hold a shotgun, so he got to break some clays for the first time ever with a very light shooting 28 gauge SA. Fine week all around.

  18. Saw this posted from a 247 mod - Texas signee Neto Umeozulu is one of eight offensive linemen from the Lone Star State at the Under Armour All-America Game. While he might not be ranked as high as others, one of the UA coaches, who has a dozen or so NFL clients, revealed Thursday that Umeozulu might have the highest ceiling of the bunch. He pointed to the fact that Umeozulu, who has worked at both guard and tackle the past few days, is still growing into his body and should only get more physical in the coming years.

  19. There are several things that will help at Moody. Some of this is personal projection/wish fulfillment, but some of it isn't. First, the Erwin Center is a true multi purpose arena, with the seats going back at a pretty low angle. Compared to dedicated basketball arenas, the farthest seats might as well be in a different zip code. Sitting in anything but the first few rows of the upper deck frankly sucks. Because of the bowl shape there's a plethora of really bad seating options in terms of angles even beyond how far away from the court they're located. The priority when it was built was creating a venue with a large seating capacity for various events, including registrations, graduations, concerts, etc.. Basketball wasn't exactly an afterthought, but it wasn't the priority it should have been, either. Second, the location is not great. Okay, it's not on the other side of Austin, but the Moody Center being on the north side of MLK is helpful, IMO. Not a game changer, but helpful. Third, the students became a low priority starting in the early 80s when growing revenue became THE driver for the athletic department. I've honestly never seen anyone campaign as hard or as successfully for the students to make a difference as Chris Beard has. Tom Penders did some of it when he got the job, and it helped. But Beard has way more clout than Penders ever did, and he's a better marketer/manipulator than Penders was, too. Having a brand new arena is a one time event that will allow a lot of changes for season ticket holders - changes that are going to make a lot of people very unhappy - that wouldn't have been politically feasible with the Erwin Center. It helps that CDC seems to see it much the same way, but Beard being the students' advocate for a much more impactful seating arrangement is critical, mostly because he's a very effective advocate. There's also the matter of putting a successful product on the court, which I feel confident is going to happen. It would probably help if the team was more offensive oriented from a casual fan perspective, but winning trumps high scoring games. It also probably helps some if the football program stays moribund, but I'd really really like that to change. Preferably in my lifetime, please. So, to recap, the Moody is going to be a much better venue to watch a basketball game. The seating is much more dramatically vertical, so even the farthest seats aren't that far from the court. It's going to be much louder for the same reason. While distance wise it's not that much closer to campus than the Erwin Center, perception wise it is. The students are going to have a lot more premium seats in the Moody, instead of just behind both baskets (which at one point they didn't even have that). Chris Beard is going to be effective in making a difference with his continuous, energetic, eternally positive, and multi pronged marketing to the student body as well as to the general fan base. Lastly, as Texas puts a competitive, top 10/top 20 product on the court year after year, people are going to get excited to build a part of their identity around Texas basketball. The idea Texas is going to equal KU in atmosphere isn't all that realistic, but Texas can certainly exceed United Supermarkets Arena while Beard was there.

  22. i happen to think that it should be impossible for two teams from the same conference to meet in the championship game. it completely skews the balance of power, and provides much needed hype for recruiting. the committee did this on purpose, and it stinks to high heaven. sec! sec! sec! in what other conference sport is that even fucking possible? why even have conferences if that can happen? we will never ever in our lives see a cowboys - eagles super bowl, and you know what? that's fine with me.

  31. While we are on the topic of ESPN, they absolutely played a role in this. Big time CFB was a glorious and fun sport for about 100 years and none of us realized we were not having fun by hoping for a conference title and a big bowl win. At most, we’d get a few regional sports columnists sniping at each other over who was the “real national champion” and then we’d all move on. And then comes ESPN and sports talk radio. Talking sports men in suits— who had to fill up hours and hours of air time— began arguing for WEEKS about this shit and then also set about convincing us that we didn’t really enjoy the sport because a “true champion” wasn’t crowned. And we bought this bulllshit even though anyone can tell you that going undefeated and winning the Cotton Bowl was glorious and perfect and in no way tainted by the fact that maybe some Yankee school also won all their games. A case study in creating a market then finding a product for it.
