  4. There’s a domino effect that not setting the edge has that we saw last year. Jones, who was the only guy who could set the edge, goes down against OU. That forces us to play Collins out of position so we can try to hold up at the point of attack. Playing Collins out of position meant he wasn’t playing inside, which meant more snaps for guys like Broughton who shouldn’t have been on the field. Teams didn’t even bother trying to run between the tackles against us because they knew we couldn’t hold the edge. That forced our unathletic safeties (Foster) and a hurt/physically limited Brockermeyer to have to play more sideline to sideline. Thats why getting Mathis and getting valuable snaps from Sorrell/Finkley/Dorbah/DJ Harris is so big. If we can simply be average at the edge spots, it forces teams to play more between the tackles where we are actually okay with Coburn, Collins, Sweat and Ojomo inside. This allows safeties to play more downhill and we can also play more single high coverage with Cook coming down into the box. Also, if we are just waiting til after Bama wins by 28 to panic and make changes then go ahead and just ax the top man because that’s beyond idiotic. We chose the route we chose. Losing to a #1 ranked team with 2 guys who could win the Heisman shouldn’t shock anyone inside a program who just gave up 57 points to Kansas. TLDR; I could argue landing Mathis is a bigger get than Ewers

  5. Soooooooo…. Dont know how I missed this, other than it just wasn’t on my radar at all. So I went to a couple of Purdue boards just to see if there’s any talk about Texas yet. Not all that much. But there’s quite a few comments about the “notorious Chris Beard.” “I’m getting PTSD just watching this Texas team.” “That fucking bank shot. Do we really have to play a Chris Beard team?” At first it seemed like an unusual reaction to the Texas Tech hiring. Why should they even give a shit? Well, they don’t. Then I checked the Texas Tech tournament games. Yep. Tech routed Painter’s Boilermakers in the Sweet 16 in a #2 (Purdue) v. #3 (Texas Tech) back in 2018. But wait, there’s more. In 2016 one of the more amazing games in that entire tournament was played between #5 seed Purdue and… …Arkansas Little Rock as the #12 seed. But it gets better. Check out this recap for those who don’t remember this game: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/recap?gameId=400871264 Basically Ark Little Rock came from down 13 with 3 and a half minutes left to play to send the game into double overtime, where they finally pulled off the upset. They’d go on to make the Sweet 16, after which Beard left for Tech. Holy shit. Painter and the Purdue fans can’t be happy about seeing a Beard coached team again. It doesn’t necessarily give me any more confidence about the matchup, but it would make it extra entertaining if Beard sent Painter’s Boilermakers home a third time with his third different team, all of them as a lower seed.

  10. Do what you want, but I will tell you the biggest problem in this country with second place being a long distance away has been our creation of echo chambers. It’s not fair to ask of you to be some kind of person on the front lines for the issues/perspective you espouse when you have the perception you’re in enemy territory. I’m not going to tell you not to take offense, that it’s “not personal” and that “everyone gets made fun of.” If I were in your shoes that would not feel compelling to me. What I will say is if you feel like a lone wolf for a position/tribe you advocate - in this case LGBTQ, and specifically transgender - then maybe you’re exactly what this community needs. Tribalism is at its most dangerous when there’s no exposure to the other side. It creates an ignorance. Inherently as a tribal species we begin to demonize the other side, which can lead to seeing it as an existential threat that has to be marginalized and/or exterminated. We don’t have our preconceived notions effectively challenged. By FAR the most effective counter to tribalism is some kind of personal relationship imbued with respect and admiration for a member of the opposing tribe. That never forms in an echo chamber. The advent of the internet, the profitable dissection of our society into tranches, each with their preferred presentation of information, means that each tribe seeks out fellow members who then echo the group think, create litmus tests for what is required to be a member of the tribe, and then paint any who oppose those litmus tests as fundamentally flawed and evil. I’m not saying you’re saving the world by posting on surlyhorns. That’s absurd. Maybe you never make a difference at all. I don’t know. But I do know the true battle we’re in as a society is the battle between our most basic tribal impulses - impulses that aren’t going anywhere, btw - and our brain’s amazing cognitive ability to overcome those impulses if presented with compelling persuasion. Honestly, sometimes that compelling persuasion is not on the positive end. Shame, fear, guilt, pain can be tools to repress our natural instincts as well. But so can love, respect, admiration, passion, and conviction. I’ll tell you up front I’m not in favor of biological men who identify as women being allowed to compete in women’s sports. I will also say I am not an LGBTQ ally on most issues. That said, we need more love in this world, and people should be encouraged to love who they want. Whatever discomfort I might feel in this regard is my problem, that deals with my issues and background, not on the people who just want to love one another. In any case, I’m convicted you’re an important voice on this board. You are a great community member who interacts with everyone in constructive/positive ways. If you’re feeling embattled right now I appreciate you’re feeling that way, and don’t want to delegitimize it in any way. That said, that feeling of being embattled may be exactly the reason you’re supposed to be posting on here. We need to hear an alternative perspective from someone we trust and respect that gets outside our own echo chambers.

  16. I think our obsession with equating every opponent with Hitler and nattering on about relative evil is detrimental to evaluating our involvement in an armed conflict. Now reflected in our super-hero comic book movie culture, we're obsessed with making every conflict a battle between good and evil to save the world. Just stop. Putin's rating on the Hitler scale is irrelevant to discussion about American policy. We don't fight our wars since Hitler for the same reasons we fought Hitler. Our leaders just use that model (with the dull minded press usually tagging along) to drum up support for whatever hidden reason (useful or not) they have for wanting to "send our boys in to kill the bad guys." Guess what? We were the bad guys in Vietnam. To most of Iraq, we were the bad guys in Iraq. Same in Afghanistan. Does anyone who has read a paragraph of history think we invaded Grenada to save third rate medical students? Did Nicaragua love the Contras? Was Chile glad we orchstrated the removal and murder of Allende? Hey man, who even knows about that shit anymore? Exactly. Tally-ho, after the wicked fox!

  17. I imagine many trans people are upset with the horrible things that have been said over the past few days but honesty it all starts that the woman in question. She shouldn’t have participated. By all rules, she has a right to participate. But she chose to set off this criticism. Her selfishness set back trans acceptance and a whole new slew of laws will soon be created. Even worse than what many states are already proposed or passed. Whenever a trans woman wins a sports championship against other women, it will always be viewed as suspect. People may celebrate her win. Competitors may even will say they’re ok with it. But they’re not. The silence in defending this swimmer’s win is deafening.

  20. I hate losing to anyone. Baylor has no special treatment there. I’ve also hated Baylor’s disgustingly self righteous disingenuous hypocritical culture since I was in high school in the 80s and got old enough to really understand what it was all about. Since then, my instincts have only been proved out as accurate over and over. So yea, there’s some specialness there. Now go eat a bag. Or a bible. Or whatever.

  21. Lots of Russian super weapons fall somewhere between “vapor ware” and “disappointing” on the spectrum, inclusive. My favorite remains the MiG-25, which we believed was this Eastern Bloc super fighter capable of taking on anything in the skies. We built an actual super fighter, the F-15, in response. It turned out to be this hellacious hand welded rat rod of an interceptor, designed solely to shoot down bombers with gravity bombs that were really no longer the most important pillar of the nuclear triad. A literal missile that you could sit on and kind of turn a little bit, I love the MiG-25, to be clear.

  23. The Astros are spending 24 million on Baez, Nerris, Odo and Montero this year George Springer plays for the blue jays for 24 million per year. the Astros are 40,000,000 under the tax line. Carlos Correa makes 35,000,000 to play for the Twins. None of these things make sense to me right now. I’m hopeful they have some sort of galaxy brain plan they are waiting to spring on us. I will be patient. I’m at a loss, right now, for how the last 2 off-seasons made any type of sense losing the heart (Springer) and face (correa) of the only title winning team we’ve ever had over deals that were clearly affordable if we had wanted to do them. We clearly did not want to do them. If we were really scrounging for loose change and needed to be under the tax after bringing back Correa and Springer we could have traded Uncle Mike. They are acting like this window will stay open forever and we don’t need to have any sense of urgency. Maybe they have deals lined up with Yordan and Tucker to take them through 2028 and a crystal ball that says Whitley, Brown and someone else are going to be awesome on the bump and we will get another decade of playoff baseball here, but that’s typically not how competitive windows work. 1 title for this organization during this golden age of talent would be a shame to rival the Braves in their decade of awesomeness. I am so grateful for everything the Astros have been for the last 7 or 8 years. I’m just scared shitless that it was all Lunhow and Crane is the emperor with no clothes.

  26. one more, ... Fresh off a reelection win in 2020, Young announced he had tested positive for COVID-19, months after he had referred to the coronavirus as the “beer virus” before an audience that included older Alaskans and said the media had contributed to hysteria over COVID-19. He later called COVID-19, for which he had been hospitalized, serious and encouraged Alaskans to follow guidelines meant to guard against the illness. “I’ll defend my state to the dying breath, and I will always do that and they know that.”

  28. 8? Dude, it’s been 14. One first round win in 14 fucking years. All those NBA players with nothing to show for it, and this roster full of players from the Island of Misfit Toys, an all star squad of losers, comes together to play amazing defense to show us what a team that’s actually been coaches really looks like. So excited for the future.
