After 37 years as a registered Republican (but who did not vote for Trump in '16 or '20- first time ever not voting R), I just re-registered as an independent. Can no longer have even the loosest affiliation with this madness.26 points

I know this has been posted before, but it's so goddamned spot on it should be posted every few pages here. Every word is completely unassailable. Even the most ardent trump supporter could not credibly find a single misstatement or untruth. I often struggle to fully articulate the problems with this man because there is seemingly something dumber every second. This summary is just so fucking right.16 points

It was Thanksgiving 1986, at the tender age of 16 that I realized my family was different. For the first time, I brought a girlfriend to the family Holiday dinner. She was a good girl from a good family, and she wasn't ready for what that day would bring. Uncle Garry had been drinking since about 10 AM, while smoking cigarettes on the back porch. It was late afternoon when my Grandmother announced that dinner was ready and we should head to the table. Typical set up of young kids at a small table to the side and the rest of us circling the family table in the dining room. As we sit, Uncle Garry sits directly next to my date. As tradition would have it, we would all take turns to proclaim what we were most Thankful for that year. When it came to my girlfriend, she said "I am thankful for having a great boyfriend and getting to spend this holiday with his family", and a round of awwwwws spread throughout the room. Next up Uncle Garry, who mumbles a few words and then turns to my girlfriend and says, "So, how long did you make him wait before he got a little stinky on his pinky?" 1/2 the family was in shock, 1/2 in laughter and my elder grandma in confusion as she didn't hear/understand what was said. I was mortified, but not surprised and that was the last family Holiday that young lady attended with me. Fast forward about 5 years....set up is exactly the same as in 1986. Bible thumping Sherry's son decides that he is most thankful "to have a loving family that I know will support me, even though I am gay." Complete despair spread across Aunt Sherry's face, as she finally heard what most of the family had known for years. Her son, a supposed child of God, was homosexual. As she regained her composure, she broke the silence by asking if there were any other bombshells he wanted to drop, to which he replies, "Yes, I also got a tattoo, but its hidden on my hip where no one will see." Sherry musters the strength to ask what the tattoo says....and before he could answer, Uncle Garry blurts "It says I'm a Queer, Stick it Here!" And the road goes on forever and the party never ends.15 points

It's not like this is an RFP for a government contract, where you just have to supply all the right details and you are awarded the contract. This is more like trying to convince a stripper to go home with you. You might spend a few hours having her play with your junk while you throw a giant stack of crisp 20s at her, and explain to her that you have a Scarface-sized mound of cocaine back in your hotel room. But then for some reason at the end of the night - while you're standing in front of the club waiting for the strippers to pour out - you you see her driving off in a 15 year old Honda Civic with some greasy dude with a neck tattoo - and you're left wondering "What the hell went wrong?". Sometimes recruiting doesn't make any sense.12 points

Well, you have to separate good policy from rational democratic policy making. We instinctively get this at home, but we get frustrated when overseas partners aren’t making good choices— even when rational. Germany is a big democratic nation with overlapping legitimate and caustic interests just like us. You have a solid, essentially burgher class that just wants a humming export economy and affordable energy. You have a smaller, but savvy and vocal green movement that enjoys broad support from the burghers so long as the economy keeps going. You have a much smaller but proportionally extremely powerful group who— openly or not— stand to get fantastically rich from partnering with Russia, much more so than they do in maintaining nuclear energy. You have basically no constituency that cares strongly about nuclear. And you have a bombshell event— Fukushima. This is a golden opportunity for Merkel. She wins points with greens (I am on purpose not using capital letters) by shuttering nuclear, long a demand. She wins points with burghers— cheap gas and export factories! She satisfies the vast network of Ost-oriented businessmen and politicians. The cost is reliance on Russia, and it’s worth noting that she isn’t paying the piper on that. Her successor is. You can easily see an American leader making a similar short sighted bargain and in fact we have and continue to act this way. Doing it with China is long term most damaging, but thus far every politician since Nixon has kicked that can down the road to the next person up. This isn’t an excuse, and in particular neither we or the Germans are honest about the outsize role authoritarian money plays in this process.12 points

From Mike Roach — One staff hire that has flown under the radar is Bobby Merritt. A former NFL and CFL scout, Merritt is listed on his twitter as the assistant director of player personnel scouting. After a career in the military, Merritt spent 12 years in the NFL as a college scout with the Lions and Texans. He also worked as the director of football recruiting for Tennessee and director of player personnel for Houston. Most recently, Merritt served as the director of scouting and assistant GM for the Edmonton Elks of the CFL. According to a high school coach I spoke to with knowledge of Merritt, he's playing a pivotal role in scouting college prospects in the NCAA Transfer Portal. The coach I spoke with also said he's doing some work self-scouting the current roster. It wasn't a hire that made waves, but it's fascinating to see Sark continue to add layers to the personnel department.10 points

if someone hasn't seen the episode then they shouldn't come clicking on the thread where everyone is talking about the episode. 🤷🏼♂️ this kind of "common courtesy" reminds me of people who get to a four way stop before the other cars, but then insist on telling the other cars to go first. there's already an order in place that's very simple to follow, and while you might have good intentions, you're just making it harder on everyone. don't come into the thread right after a new episode airs if you haven't watched the episode. if you do come into the thread and get spoiled, that's on you.10 points

I dvr it and purposefully wait until it's over so I can zip through the commercials (amazing how fast the show goes by that way). I don't look at twitter, I don't pull up this thread, nothing, until I've watched the episode. Then I get online for reaction and comments. It's pretty easy to not get spoiled if you don't want to.9 points

Good points, especially on Sark and culture. Herman had a lot of that in place (even if some didn't like his personality) but he's too much of a blowhard to see his mistakes in scheme and coaching hires. He also didn't receive near enough pushback and assistance from administration in getting it right. He was an up and coming coach that needed a coming to Jesus moment from day one. It's the administrations job to make sure that is ironed out. He needed better assistant coaches. There's no excuses for the administration allowing some of those dudes to be hired. Other schools would have ironed all that out before hiring him. At the end of the day, Herman didn't land the right players. I've never seen a coach give away top recruits like Strong and Herman. Their recruiting issues weren't helped by the administration but much of it was their own undoing. The recruiting services way overvalued those classes. Development is an issue but that is discussed here all the time. It's always the coach's fault. Is that really the only issue? Even the main issue? Let's look at it from another viewpoint: 3 RECRUITS I MENTIONED BEFORE: Eagles left Texas early with very limited success to...declare for the draft. I think that tells you something about Brennan Eagles. I seriously doubt he develops in some alternative universe. He's just another school's deadweight. He can't sink his hips and change directions. It was an issue in high school. There is not a miracle pill. Washington is a wide receiver that runs over 4.7 in the 40 (yikes!). Moore was also a high 4.6 to low 4.7 kid coming out of high school (lol at him telling the world he's the fastest man on the team). Moore was a mental headcase in high school. I'm not sure how many schools were really pushing for him down the stretch. It's almost like he was starting to run out of options. But that recruiting ranking! How many successful receivers at blueblood programs, while also being skinny as a rail, run 4.75? 4.65? Our rosters over the years are littered with players like that on both sides of the ball. I'm glad to see Sark upping the game at receiver. We still need more there, and not just transfers. Even back in the mid-2000's, I'm of the opinion that Greg Davis, his biggest issue, was laziness in recruiting and pay for play. We'd get some top recruits but way too inconsistent, especially on the o-line and at receiver. And then when school's started paying players in the state again, it was all downhill from there on out. The defense needs a huge shot in the arm in that department as well. It lacked speed and athleticism in a major way in the past few years. Doesn't excuse the lack of toughness last year. That's a culture issue. HOW MANY GREAT COLLEGE COACHES ARE OUT THERE? Coaching has definitely been an issue, and corch Meh was incompetent, but if you don't have the talent then it's harder to evaluate a coach one way or another. Talent being equal: Herman or Cookie Monster? Herman or Les Miles? Herman or Cristobal? Herman or Kirby Smart? Herman or Jimbo Fisher? I would take Herman in every case with equal talent. I can tell you how every one of those other coaches was so successful (at least in stretches) and I think you already know the answer. Just a wake up call: There aren't very many great coaches in college football. That's why we have such a hard time hiring one. It's been that way for a 100 years with only a few exceptions. Bear Bryant would like to tell you how he won. Go look it up. "IF HE BITES YOU AS A DOG, HE WILL BITE YOU AS A PUP" - Darrell K. Royal An influx of 5-star "type" talent spread out over the various position groups has always been the championship winning formula at this level. This is not the NFL. Coaching is important but at a blueblood program it is more about talent acquisition than we want to believe. The 250th "ranked" recruit in a class is a crap shoot and the kid ranked 900th may be a significantly better player and athlete. Of course, if he commits to Texas he goes from unranked to probably 500th in most cases. And many times much higher than that. He also comes to Texas with way more pressure on him than at TCU. He's not just going to be thrown on the field in front of small crowds, and against weak out of conference opponents, and given the chance to learn on the job. It doesn't work that way here or any other blueblood program. TCU taking a QB and turning him into a linebacker is a good way to find a plus athlete at the linebacker position, if you know how to evaluate the right talent and they have the right mental approach to make the switch. That's more evaluation than development. It also helps if they're willing to inject steroids into their system. And as I stated the previous paragraph, the pressure is much greater here. Saban has a lot of top ranked talent that ends up being worthless (a lot higher ranked than the kids Texas is landing). He just keeps landing enough of them. I'm not saying he's not a good developer, just making a point. Many of his good players bite as a pup. How is that development? IF OUR PLAYERS ARE SO GOOD, WHY AREN'T THE TRANSFERS KILLING IT ELSEWHERE? Why aren't all these players that transfer from Texas going on to great success elsewhere? If they can be developed then why aren't they being developed at their next destination and then off to the NFL? There are a few that were decent elsewhere, but very few of them over the years. And that's something that needs more attention. Maybe a lot these kids with questionable speed and measurables, or with limited flexibility and very little desire for success, maybe they just aren't that good? Where are the complete players? The near finished products the day they arrive to campus? The sculpted clay that just needs some small details? I will repeat: Darrell Royal said a great player will bite as a pup. I don't see many of those landing here. Why? How is that a development issue? How many of our frosh and sophomores pop off the page when they get on campus? At the spring game? In practice? Not stupid fake reports by "journalists". DO SOME OF OUR CLASSES EVEN LOOK THAT GOOD ON PAPER? Texas lands way too many 4-star kids that finish 200-400 in the so-called "rankings". EVEN COACHES WITH AN ELITE SPECIALTY STRUGGLE HERE AT THEIR SPECIALTY Strong was a really good defensive coordinator but suddenly can't coach defense? He was a terrible head coach but he can coach defense. How is that development? Sark tore it up at Alabama but struggled last year on offense. I think he showed a lot of promise on that side of the ball. But we didn't exactly tear it up last year on offense. He's cleaning house on that side of the ball. Bringing in more dynamic players. Why? Because we were so talented?? IT'S LIKE A DOG CHASING HIS TAIL. A CONSTANT LOOP THAT NEVER ENDS. FOR NEARLY 40 YEARS. This is a recurring theme here since I've been alive. There was a 7 or 8 year stretch since 1983 where the talent was good, right after the cheating in the SWC was temporarily halted. The talent was probably elite for only 4 years or so. You could see 2010 from a mile away. We didn't recruit on offense after 2006. Thank you for the two man show of Shipley and McCoy. Total disaster. We did still land players on defense for a few more years. All I know is for 40 years I keep hearing the same damn thing from the administration and the fanbase. Why hasn't it been fixed then? Talent Kills. You know when you have it.7 points

This is pretty interesting. As some of y'all know, my Twitter feed has 90,000 followers. Everyday I get an average of 110-140 new followers. At any given time I can look at the list of most recent followers. Usually, if I mouse over the profile of each new follower, I'll have a wide diversity. Some will have had their twitter accounts for 10 years, some six, some two or whatever. They will also have a wide disparity in followers, of course. Since the announcement that Musk is buying Twitter, I've been flooded with new followers and most of them are bots. This first shot shows my most recent followers. Many of them are bots. How do I know? They all got their accounts this month, they are all following between 10-75 accounts (right now), and they have not tweeted at all (or maybe just one tweet). Example: MrFisherman, Marcie Crow, Nicole Naumann, and probably luis garcia are bots. If you look at the second, third and fourth photos, you'll see the accounts that MrFisherman, Marcie Crow, and Nicole Naumann --- who all just got twitter accounts ---- are following. I am at the top, naturally, because I just got the message that these accounts are following me. But check out the rest of the folks these accounts are following: Lauren Boebert, Chuck Woolery, Dinesh D'Souza, Donald Trump Jr. etc.. There is absolutely no question that these are bots. My guess is that they're being planted and either won't tweet at all or will be used to retweet Boebert, Woolery etc... What's interesting is that I don't see any move by the Democrats/liberals to counter this. I'm not seeing legions of new followers that, when I check who they are following, I see AOC, Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden etc... That's why I think it's interesting that Elon says he's going to defeat bots. It will be great if he manages to do it. Again, the first image shows my most recent followers. The next three show who some of my new followers are following. Between them, neither MrFisherman, Marcie or Nicole have a single tweet and all three got their twitter accounts yesterday (I'm guessing).7 points
