  1. Yeah--I'll discuss the incident. For an entire motherfucking hour during the incident, the Uvalde Police sat outside with their thumbs up their asses. The Uvalde Police Department, by the way, takes up 40% of the City's budget. It also just got a $500,000 grant from DHS for equipment. It has a fully kitted-out SWAT team. Here's a photo of them. One fucking hour they sat around. Not 15 minutes or even 20. A fucking hour. People at the scene told them "if you don't go in, I've got a gun in my truck and I'll go in." The cops threatened them with arrest for "interfering." Here's an idea--if we're going to kit out police officers like the military, then we ought to treat them the same way we would a soldier who displays cowardice in the face of the enemy. That means a court martial. And if found guilty, it means execution by firing squad. "Pour encourager les autres." Is that enough discussion of the motherfucking incident for you?

  4. In the novel American Psycho, there’s a disturbing scene — so disturbing, in fact, that it’s not included in the film adaptation. While visiting the zoo, Patrick Bateman approaches and stabs a child who had wandered off from his family. Knowing that his act need not prove fatal and that prompt medical attention could save the victim, he poses as a doctor and orders the crowd to give him and the child space. Bateman wastes vital time feigning attempts to save the child and preventing anyone who could (and who actually wanted to) help from being able to do so. It occurred to me today: the GOP is Patrick Bateman. The party’s deliberate policy choices repeatedly and predictably result in the slaughter of children. But when anyone advocates action that would prevent further tragedy, GOP politicians call them off, wielding feigned sanctimony and disingenuous pleas to respect the memory of the victims to ensure no one intervenes to prevent the murder of yet more American children. Oh, and: spoiler alert.

  6. I’m a “simpleton” that has been trained on the use of M4s and carried them in a war zone. I’m a “simpleton” who realizes they do not belong on the streets to be used by private citizens. I’m the “simpleton” that realizes it’s absurd an 18 year old can buy two on his birthday. I’m a “simpleton” who believes there are plenty of common sense gun laws that will help curb this violence while you trout out tired bullshit talking points while empirical evidence from other countries shows otherwise. You are just a troll that cares more about his guns that the lives of innocent children. So again, go fuck yourself.

  9. I don't know that it's a disconnect so much as an indication that he doesn't really care. I have plenty of policy positions that I favor, but I routinely vote for candidates who don't share those positions. I favor complete decriminalization of all drugs. My congressman doesn't. Does that mean that I'm going to vote against him? Hell no, because it's just not that important to me. And I agree with his policy positions on most other things. What @BabaYaga is telling you is that children being murdered in their classrooms isn't important enough to him to change his voting preference away from people who he knows are committed to making sure it continues.

  10. No. Just fucking no. We have a saying in the fire service, and it’s a saying that is used to drive decision making in the heat of battle. Risk a lot to save a lot. Risk a little to save a little. Risk nothing to save nothing. Risk a lot to save a lot means that no matter how dire the situation may appear, if there is any chance that my actions could lead to a positive outcome then I’m all in. All in means all in. I stood in front of my coworkers, my family, and the taxpayers that pay my salary and swore service before self. That’s what a civil servant is. There’s a handwritten letter in my locker at work. It has my wife’s name on it and it is sealed in an envelope. There are two people that know about that letter, and she isn’t one of them. In that letter is everything I hope she never has to read. But I wrote it because if the day ever comes where it’s either me or Joe Shit the ragman that gets to go home, then my last act on this earth is trying to make sure Ms. Joe Shit isn’t a widow. And I’m at peace with that. I come to work with the goal of going home to my family at the end of my shift, but with the understanding that everyone else goes home to theirs first. What you’re condoning is cowardice and I’m not ok with it.

  11. the idea that people can believe there is an interventionist, "personal god" as described by the sacred texts of the majority of human religions while also knowing that people like dan patrick and ted cruz exist among us and prosper in positions of societal power is absolutely fucking extraordinary to me. the absolute lowest form of human shit possible.

  12. Well, other than my wife, and my doctor, you fuckers are the only ones to know. I had an endoscopy last Thursday as I have had increasing difficulty swallowing food. The scope showed a stricture (narrowing of the esophagus near the stomach that he stretched out. As a matter of course, like a colonoscopy, they took a few biopsies. I got a call last night from my GE. I got the cancer. He's not an oncologist, so doesn't want to try to paint to much of a picture, but it's in the esophagus, so likely esophageal cancer. That's not a good cancer. Referred me to a top thoracic oncology surgeon at City of Hope. Haven't yet connected. Until the tests are done, really won't know the stage or any of that. I've been literally having an out of body experience the last 18 hours. Like it's somebody else. But it's me. Not sure how to process it. Of course all I can think about is my family. Son is graduating HS in a week. I don't want this to fuck him up, so may wait to tell the kids until afterwards. And he's planning on spending his first year of college in London. I don't want this to fuck it up. And, well, they really need me around. I'm having lunch with a few buddies today, one of which has brain cancer that is terminal. He and I have been friends since we were kids. I'll be driving him home. He'll be the 2nd person I tell. Figured he can relate.

  13. For the past 48 hours the only thing I have been able to think about at all is that it could have been my precious innocent beautiful little daughter, paralyzed by fear as the shooter walked in, and the last thought going through her mind being “daddy come save me”, and me not being there. This one is really fucking me up.

  14. I'm terribly sick of this "oh, the two-party system is to blame" bullshit. It's just pseudo-intellectual garbage for people who don't want to engage in the substance of an issue. There is one party that is dead right on this issue and one party that is dead wrong. And it's just pointless sophistry to say "woe, but for the two-party system, . . . ." Bullshit. If you care about preventing children from being murdered in their classrooms, then vote Democratic. If you don't, then don't. But don't come to me and say "I favor background checks and an assault-weapons ban, but I have to vote Republican because of taxes." That just tells me that you think a few bucks in your pocket is worth more than a child's life. That's hardly the political virtue you think it is (speaking here directly to @BabaYaga and not you, Heso). And don't come to me and say this is the result of some peculiarity in the two-party system. There are plenty of other countries with two-party systems that (1) have had no trouble imposing serious limitations on guns and (2) have very few mass shootings as a result. This is the result of something else entirely.

  18. My plan is to continue teaching young people in a public school. Trying to make them better people than their parents were is the only way out of this that I can see. Current adults are too far gone to change. So either we will succeed and we will slowly get better each generation, or I'll die in a school shooting. Possibly both.

  20. Astounding that we the people were OK with getting on lists and taking our shoes off anytime we go to the airport due to 1 failed terrorist attempt, but not ok with jumping thru a couple hoops to buy a machine designed to kill multiple people as efficiently as possible. We are ok with having to be trained, insured, and regularly regulated to drive a car, but not for owning a machine designed to kill multiple people as efficiently as possible. That we are ok to hold accountable a bar owner for someone who may kill someone driving home after a night of drinking, but not anyone involved in the mass shooting of innocent children. Nothing about our current situation is even close to adhering to the constitution. Guns are minimally regulated and not part of a militia designed as state defense. It is sickening that a large portion of this country fetishizes machines designed to kill as many people as possible as efficiently as possible, all while clutching their bible in one hand and some twisted version of the Constitution in the other.

  30. Fuck you to hell. You voted for this. You do it over, and over, and over. You don’t get to run away from that. You ensure that we all are forced to live under a state government that has installed a state religion, Worship of the Almighty Gun. Fuck your and your complicity and collaboration. You don’t get to vote for people who promise to do exactly what they’ve done - make guns MORE ubiquitous and EASIER to get and carry - and then say “not me.” Yea, it’s you. Burn in hell.
