  1. When you age, things change. You get too old to chase your Chesapeake Bay through a marsh. Your wife gets a couple of tiny crossbreed, toy, hybrid designer mongrels you pretend to hate but your bones hurt and your joints hurt and you know you could never really chase Rock through the woods again like you used to decades ago. You wept for Moose. You wept for Hanz. Big, sturdy dogs who brought you birds you'd shot and chased hogs. Manly. Well-trained animals who knew the report of a rifle. And you get old. And the tiny, 5lb toy dog reads you like a god damned book every step of the way. And every "the only real dog is a big dog" pretense you have melts away. Gave the wife hell about you, but I bundled you up to visit the kids and grandkids. Carried you into Shipleys on one arm to get the grandkids their twists and bullseyes. Made you a special raw diet; 3 hours every Sunday and packed into containers in the fridge in the garage. Begged to figure out what I could do to keep you here. What the fuck is a god damned maltipoo anyway??? People keep going before I do. You weren't supposed to be one of them. If you're lucky, you live long enough for god to laugh at you. I'm a lucky man. Goodbye, Ace.

  2. Go watch the Baylor and Arkansas games if you want to see why Ford wasn’t playing much the first half of the season. Stop acting like we had Ray Lewis on the bench and didn’t know it. Just like every other linebacker on the roster, Ford looked lost and then as the year went on he *gasps* got better. He developed, he improved. I’m gonna guess you won’t chalk that one up to coaching. It’s funny to see all the goalpost moving that had occurred the last 5 months. We started in December with bitching about OL recruiting, then it was assurances that our coaches would somehow screw up getting Ewers, then it was no way they will upgrade at DB, then it was we are young and inexperienced at TE, then it was fine they’ve addressed those needs but who’s going to catch passes opposite of Worthy, finally it was our LB depth is trash and they didn’t do anything to address it. Now that all those boxes have been checked, people just move to the ole reliable “I jUsT dOnT tRuSt tHeSe CoAcHeS”. It’s okay to admit that the coaches have done a good job of adding pieces, cutting dead weight and addressing needs. Outside of edge, every single need position was addressed (and there were a lot of them, we just went 5 and fucking 7) Rant over. Enjoy the rest of your Friday.

  4. No. Just fucking no. We have a saying in the fire service, and it’s a saying that is used to drive decision making in the heat of battle. Risk a lot to save a lot. Risk a little to save a little. Risk nothing to save nothing. Risk a lot to save a lot means that no matter how dire the situation may appear, if there is any chance that my actions could lead to a positive outcome then I’m all in. All in means all in. I stood in front of my coworkers, my family, and the taxpayers that pay my salary and swore service before self. That’s what a civil servant is. There’s a handwritten letter in my locker at work. It has my wife’s name on it and it is sealed in an envelope. There are two people that know about that letter, and she isn’t one of them. In that letter is everything I hope she never has to read. But I wrote it because if the day ever comes where it’s either me or Joe Shit the ragman that gets to go home, then my last act on this earth is trying to make sure Ms. Joe Shit isn’t a widow. And I’m at peace with that. I come to work with the goal of going home to my family at the end of my shift, but with the understanding that everyone else goes home to theirs first. What you’re condoning is cowardice and I’m not ok with it.

  7. Owens is not the top TB on the board for Texas. There are a lot of red flags involving the guy, including having a close relative deeply involved with violent gang shit that is playing a role in his recruitment. I'm of the opinion that Texas is drifting on this one, and they might be very much okay with it. Comparing this recruitment to Evans isn't a bad analog, but I think there is a better one - Evan Stewart. Texas ended up bailing on the Evan Stewart recruitment way earlier than we all thought they did. They were happy to let Stewart think they were still interested by taking his calls and texts, largely because it became obvious that he was just using it to drive up the price on the aggies. This happened to ATM with several OOS recruits and other schools too. This may sound like fan fiction, but it's level one, fwiw. So that's my theory on this cycle with this guy. If Texas misses on another couple of targets, they're going to keep at Owens because it is regret-free for them in terms of if he comes here or goes to ATM for something absurd. They have a TB they already like a ton anyway. One of his buddies is now involved with the personnel evaluation side of recruiting at ATM. That guy has shown up after this last class and now believes that ATM will get anybody they want. Wiltfong isn't any difference than the rest of us right now in that we have no idea whether this new source has a filter or a clue. Elko was a pretty reliable narrator for Wiltfong, but it's one thing to be the DC involved daily in hands on ways because he was a recruiting animal, and another altogether for a film room admin when it comes to having a finger on the pulse of a program's recruiting.

  10. The anger level is hitting a breaking point watching the lies and reaction from the police that could've stopped this from happening. Ban all future sales of assault weapons and add a federal registry for people that currently own them. If your weapon is used in a crime and you haven't registered that gun then you face charges as if you were the shooter. Fuck this.

  13. Abbott can’t keep kids safe in school, can’t keep the heat on in winter, and his solution to fix school massacres is to arm the very teachers he thinks are too dumb to teach history and race and to arm the very cops who are too cowardly to defend the lives of 10 year olds.

  20. Also, this is the dumbest fucking argument possible. "Laws don't stop the bad guys!" THEN WHY THE MOTHERFUCKING FUCK DO WE HAVE LAWS AT ALL???? If I wanna run a red light, I'm gonna, so why the fuck is it illegal? Why when I buy groceries at 9am can I not buy beer? Why do we outlaw weed in Texas? Why can't I play poker for money on the internet? Just the absolute most intellectually bankrupt lazy cuntface argument that exists.

  21. I’m a “simpleton” that has been trained on the use of M4s and carried them in a war zone. I’m a “simpleton” who realizes they do not belong on the streets to be used by private citizens. I’m the “simpleton” that realizes it’s absurd an 18 year old can buy two on his birthday. I’m a “simpleton” who believes there are plenty of common sense gun laws that will help curb this violence while you trout out tired bullshit talking points while empirical evidence from other countries shows otherwise. You are just a troll that cares more about his guns that the lives of innocent children. So again, go fuck yourself.

  23. In 2005, California and Texas had about the same of of gun deaths per hundred thousand. During the intervening years wherein Texas dramatically liberalized gun laws and California enacted more restrictions, gun deaths there dropped by 10% while they rose in Texas by 25%. We must hold Abbott, Patrick and Paxton accountable.

  24. Or, you know, it's a school, not a prison. In a small town where most people probably know each other and don't expect shit like this to happen. My daughter's school is in a city, near downtown, and the doors are open in the morning and teachers go in an out fairly often throughout the day. They also still do recess outside so some sick fuck could go that route if he can't enter the school. Before Covid parents were allowed to walk their kids into class, which is how I made a lot of parent friends and got to know the teachers. No way that ever comes back because we gotta make sure people have unfettered access to literal war machines for private collections or whatever.

  30. Just like with Sandy Hook and Parkland, too much energy and anger is being spent focused on the actions of law enforcement and security. This plays right into the hands of the NRA. The focus and anger should be laser focused on gun control if anything is ever going to change. Those predisposed to hate cops, even with justification, are understandably focused on that aspect. And while that aspect needs addressing, it will do nothing to change the underlying cause and problem at hand. Stay angry, but channel that energy toward harassing the fuck out of elected officials until they do something or campaigning for politicians who will. Putting the focus on law enforcement's response plays right into the hands of the "we need more secure schools to solve this problem" crowd. Fuck those cops if indeed they hung around and did nothing, but Twitter and the rest of the Internet fuck up stories like this every damn time. Internet warriors gonna do what they do. So will shitty cops. Stay focused on gun control. Get involved if you're truly moved to do so. Lots of gun control advocacy groups out there. Or just reach out to politicians directly, but keep doing it a month from now, and six months from now, and next year, and so on.
