  1. @Tom  Two of the guys I most respect and rely on for advice did EXACTLY what you are talking about.  One was 3 years and the other at 5.  Both described how they weren't drinking but we anywhere from not happy to miserable and they didn't know why.   No one in any meeting I've ever been in would shun you.  Best of luck.

  2. Sumbitch.  Jess was a great guy.  Used to do some day drinking with my brother at the Barley House.  First time, my brother said, "You know who our bartender was?  Guitarist for Slobberbone".

That band, and The Drams never got the recognition they deserved.  What a great band.

What a great cover:  LOVE that guitar tone.

This one always makes me smile.

  3. Truth.  I honestly have never laughed as much and as hard as I did while I was in treatment.  I had no idea what I was in for.  Part of me thought it would be like "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest" mixed with a religious, Kumbaya-campfire-singing session.  I couldn't have been further from the truth.

I have a buddy who right now who really needs to be in treatment but won't pull the trigger.  He convinced his doctor and some other treatment center dude into letting him try to medically detox at home and that went about as well as you would think.  I know he would have a blast and would have a much better chance at getting sober if he would just go.  I told him I would drive him up there  and that I would go back if my insurance would let me.  Just too proud/scared I guess.

The unsung hero is Rick Derringer playing the solo on Eat It

How am I just now learning this.  Had no idea he has been working as Weird Al's producer either.

That track you posted ("Why") exemplifies how lovely her voice was.  Smokey, a bit of honey, very little vibrato, simply on point.  Damn.

She sounds like Linda Thompson in that song.  Never listened to this album.  Thanks @UTCzech III

  6. This one kills me every time I hear it.  Cory Branan also has a great one called The Freefall, but all of the YT versions suck.  It is from his album, Mutt.

Has several great verses but the overall feeling is one of despair.

Also, some REK came on and I just love the line

If I could live my life all over it wouldn’t matter anyway. Cause I never could stay sober on the Corpus Christi bay.

I really love Todd Snider's version.   It had a much different vibe than REK's original.  Stripped down, sounds hungover and full of regret, sorrow and shame.

I like Buffet's material but his fans are annoying as shit.

I feel the same way about the Grateful Dead and Jesus.

This is now my favorite quote from Hornfans/Shaggy/Surly.

  9. This thing sits in the back of his studio with shit piled all around it.  Been a couple of years since I've actually seen it.  He has it dialed in and never touches it but he records directly now so he is clearing out some space and he just picked up a Vox that he is using mostly.  I'm using my Blues Jr mostly with my pedal steel....hell, if Buzz doesn't take it, I'll just scoop it up for one of my guitar amps.

    Thats why I said entertainer.

Sorry Bogey.....As Wheels says, Paul Simon is the noted sawed-off, song stealing bastard.

Oh, I have plenty of recollections of working on that one. I don't know if you heard the stories, but it was not a pleasant deal for us. I mean he [Simon] quite literally — and in no way do I exaggerate when I say — he stole the songs from us.   - Steve Berlin

I remember he played me the one he did by John Hart, and I know John Hart, the last song on the record. He goes, “Yeah, I did this in Louisiana with this zy decko guy.” And he kept saying it over and over. And I remember having to tell him, “Paul, it's pronounced zydeco. It's not zy decko, it's zydeco.” I mean that's how incredibly dilettante he was about this stuff. The guy was clueless.    - Steve Berlin

Hey yall just checking in. Normally don't post, but thought I'd share. Just did 30 days of residential and am now in IOP. I've got a total of 43 days under my belt, and today was my first day back at work. It sucks but reading through this thread has been extremely helpful today. I'm sure my employer disagrees but oh well. Thanks Yall.

The guy who does the Cuttin' Grass podcast told me "Rehab taught me how to get sober.  IOP taught me how to live and stay sober".    I did the same as you....Residential/IOP then eased back in to work.  It helped me ease back in to life after being in the protective bubble of rehab.  Best advice I got was "Don't rush yourself".

Seriously considering a koa Taylor 724ce. Anyone have experience with Kia Taylor’s?

Is this a Koa top or back/sides?

My brother has a Koa (back and sides) Taylor....I think maybe a 200 series but it was a limited edition.  I sounds like a much more expensive guitar.   A coworker also has a 700 series Koa (back and sides) that sounds incredible.  Both of these have Spruce tops.

I thought of you the other day. I am re-listening to the Forest Fires guy, starting from the first lecture. I think you were the guy who posted his stuff. Thank you.

John Clark was one of my counselors at treatment in Nashville.  Dude has an amazing story and does such a great job with that podcast. I'm so happy for him.  Another good one is Cuttin' Grass by Joe Singer.  COMPLETELY different styles.  Joe is just a dude learning how to live sober while John's is more of a closing argument style.   But both are fantastic and vital parts of my recovery.

  14. Anyone else watch Matthew Perry's interview with Diane Sawyer?  Wow.  It was really eye-opening to my wife.   I had told her the same things about myself and she kind of brushed them off as me being weak.  Then, when she hears him say he was taking 50+ Vicodin a day and had been in over 60 detoxes, spending over $7 million in rehabs and hospital stays, I think it finally set in for her.   I have long since given up caring if he gives a shit but it was the first time she acted like she had any sense of understanding what I was going through in that last year of the wheels coming off for me.

Then, three days ago, the lead singer of one of the bands I play in walked into his house and blew his brains out in front of his wife.  He was 31.  His father-in-law and I are going over to the house to clean up that mess, literally.

Everyone, please be kind to yourself.   As a friend of mine says, "Stay reachable, stay teachable and stay humble"

I quit drinking in April after reading a book called Quitting Drinking the Easy Way by Allan Carr.  It did something to my brain that turned me off of alcohol completely.  I have had no desire to drink since I read that book in one sitting in late April.  I am not sure it would work for hardcore alcoholics, but it has worked well for me.

Switched to Delta 8 seltzers. 8th Wonder Brewery makes one I like. Zero calories and no alcohol. When I first quit, I was drinking a couple D8 seltzers a day (because I was drinking daily). Now I maybe drink one or two per week.

Has been great for my health. I have lost 60 pounds, sleep better, no longer snore, am able to exercise in the morning and feel great, my BP has normalized, and my blood work on my liver has gone from borderline problem to great. For me, they have been a life saver.  I do not miss booze at all.  I rarely got drunk, but drank almost on a daily basis between 4 and 6 drinks.  Have zero issue being around booze, as there is plenty in my house as my wife will drink a glass or two of wine a couple times per week.

Quitting booze has been great for me physically, mentally, spiritually, and as a father and husband.

I tried that book about 10  years ago because fuck going to AA.  I'm not THAT bad, right?  That book didn't make a dent in me, but truly glad it helped you.  It was another 6 years before I finally ended up in treatment.
