  1. I mean, I still think he’ll be a good player again, and I know he’s had injuries, but his drop off since the MVP year has been bizarre. Maybe it’s all injury related, I don’t know.
  2. My guess is that Brinson is getting a look at potentially making the club as a 4th/5th OF, at least until Meyers is back.
  3. Move Pena from 1st to 8th and it would look good to me.
  4. I just assumed he was into matures.
  5. Agreed, (1) it doesn’t matter, it’s done, (2) we’ll probably never really know what the real/whole story was, and (3) I’m so exhausted by lazy baseball writers quadrupling down on tired drama stories, trying to squeeze more and more juice out of the same lemon.
  6. They had a future HOFer back in the 80s.
  7. Seems like it would make sense to let Mills start in ‘22 and see what he’s got. Then go into the ‘23 draft, a better one for QBs, with a shitload of draft capital.
  8. Yeah, a 3/$105mm deal, or anything in that vicinity, would seem to be exactly what the Astros wanted. Only thing that makes sense is that CC’s camp made it clear that any short deal would have to include player options, no trade, etc. And perhaps the club isn’t willing to do that. And maybe the “ghosting” was the club actually taking a hard line about giving in to those contract demands. I guess the other possibility is that the club wanted it to appear that they wanted CC (but really didn’t want him back for whatever reason) and then, when it became apparent he could be had for fewer than 5 years, they ignored him so he’d sign elsewhere. This seems much less likely to me. Im talking out of my ass, so who knows, but I have to think the first of these scenarios seems more likely.
  9. That’s super cool. I studied exercise physiology in grad school and thought about going to biomechanics (another discipline in our dept) but never did. Wish I had and I do think biomechanical analysis the next big thing in sports analytics.
  10. I think so. A Brantley/Tucker/Conforto OF would be pretty bad defensively. But maybe not disastrous. And I imagine he could be had for a 1 or 2 year deal, which the Astros like.
  11. I like Conforto as a hitter but not sure he fits with this roster.
  12. You forgot the part about drafting Appel instead of Bryant and trading Hader at al for Gomez. Im just kidding, I know Lunhow was great, not arguing that. My point is that their circumstances couldn’t be more different. And I’m not saying Click is going well, more that I don’t know how to fairly evaluate him at this point.
  13. I mean, yeah, instead of being in a position to draft in the top 5 each year and then have those players become all-stars on rookie contracts (and inheriting Altuve and Springer), he took over with no first or second round picks and all the best players reaching free agency. It’s impossible to compare Click and Lunhow.
  14. He’s gone and we couldn’t do nothing about it.
  15. What this post presupposes is…they have a plan?
  16. holy shit, he’s already been in Tampa for 23 years?!?
  17. I think what we’ll see is top-tier teams taking a wait-and-see approach entering the season, with intentions of acquiring players to bolster the roster at midseason. Basically the approach the Astros have taken for a few years now. So, off-seasons characterized by short-term deals and trying to extend your key players before they reach free agency. Then looking to address specific needs at the deadline. But yeah, you’ll always have teams trying to do what the Mets are doing right now…but these will likely be the exception (and it’s not like it always works out). Good point about the byes - but remember that the owners wanted 14 teams in the playoffs.
  18. Yup. And this is a big reason why owners want expanded playoffs - because the more teams that get in, the less you have to spend, the less that true greatness is incentivized. Even seven-game series in baseball can be fluky and are often not won by the team with the best roster or that proved to be the best over a large 162-game sample. Goodrum is fine; $2mm for a veteran with positional flexibility is more or less “the scrap heap.” If they need a roster spot his salary won’t stop them from placing him back on the scrap heap. I hear you about getting another bat, and yeah there is current financial flexibility (relative to where the payroll has been). I’d be happy with a guy like Conforto or something like that (I’d rather have him than Soler)…he could probably be had for a short deal (a prove-it contract) and, if he is back to normal, isn’t much different than Bryant.
  19. Exactly. They are the coulda/woulda/shoulda heavyweight champions of the world.
  20. Fangraphs top-100 prospect list is out. They have Pena at #30 overall. That’s encouraging. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2022-top-100-prospects/
  21. Also, I know the thread title reads “non-aggy,” but the 2020 A&M team epitomizes “overrated” more than any others in recent memory. Covid-shortened year meant that they played 10 games. They went 9-1 and finished the season ranked #4. Their loss was by 4 TDs. The combined record of the 9 opponents they defeated was 39-56. The best team they beat was Florida (8-4) at home. The only other decent team they beat was Mack’s UNC team in the Orange Bowl, and pretty much all of their best players sat out of the bowl game. That is the definition of an overrated team.
