Yep. And shit, man, we're a cycling family. Wife went to the nationals crit in Boston riding for SWTin the 90s. We have, at last count, 7 bikes hanging in the garage, and they all get used on a regular basis. But got-damn if there aren't some folks around here that need a serious dose of reality when it comes to cycling around this area.

My son & grandsons bike around South Austin frequently. On occasion they wheel down from the St. Elmo area to Shady Grove, a family favorite since his late wife started working there 20 years go. It's long ride back up S. 1st though. lol

A friend (a retired restaurant owner) who lives in South Austin rides all the trails with a bike group in the greenbelts several times a week, weather permitting, plus he works hard on building new routes. I'd say he is an avid recreational bike rider.

Living in Taipei in the 1950s, I saw first hand the benefits of a serious bicycle infrastructure setup. It worked well for the majority of the city dwellers back then. Austin is nowhere near what that town needed as far as pedal power goes.

Bikes will never be a viable form of transportation other than recreation for even a full one percent of the commuting public.  Hills and heat pretty much guarantee this.  Bike lanes need to be excluded when talking about traffic improvement and funding.  Put it with parks and rec etc....because it is strictly a recreational activity for affluent Austonians.  Your bus boy isn't riding his bike to work.

And Pasken, are you trying to serious tell us a freeway shoulder was intended for Bike use?  LMAO...you think people buy this shit who don't live in the 04?

This bears repeating. Austin is not NYC or Portland, no matter how much the hardcore minority bikebots try.

  3. I'm one of those old gassers who prefers his vintage cars in original stock configuration or only slightly modified. Just saw this beautiful '55 last week at Great Hills Automotive  - exterior looks nice even with the aftermarket rims & rearview mirrors, but the interior with buckets & console were a turn off. Being slightly lowered was not very appealing to me either.

So, that was your first gun, bought new?

Actually I did buy it new in 1965 at Chuck's Guns on Interregional Highway (Austin) - $29.95. Italian replica of a 1750 vintage British Tower pistol, .69 caliber.

  5. Here's an oldie - found this bank bag whilst rooting around in a box from the attic. My Dad was personnel director there in 1959 - his first job after he retired from the Army. Perry's Restaurant is located there now (next to the vintage Norwood Tower):

Definitely not as steep a drop off as the ramp at Mansfield dam

In the Spring of 1962 I dropped my set of car/house keys about 25 yards out & to the left a bit from Walsh boat ramp. The next winter when Lake Austin was lowered, I trudged around in the mud looking for them unsuccessfully. Would've called the metal detector guy from Sh***y (Neptune?) to help search, but he probably hadn't been born yet.

I attended the 69 game in Fayettenam.  Got two tix from a classmate in physics. I had no date and no time to get one so me and my roomie drove from about 3pm to the middle of the night on the most treacherous fucking roads I have ever been on.  The people were horrible, the weather was horrible, and the drive back was horrible.  But I'd do it all again right now.  15-14!

My brother drove up for that game. On the way back home he tried to fill up his VW, but not one station in Arkansaws would sell him any gas. He barely made it across the state line to fill it up. Toothless grandma hawg fans everywhere flipping the bird at his Texas plates.

DKR wasn't joking when he said it was like parachuting into Russia.
