Thought I read two locations shuttering (one now and another very soon).  I'm on campus once or twice a week for work stuff, but I am complete awe almost every time as there seems to be something new or under construction at every turn.  West Campus aside, the shit going on in North Campus area is starting to really take off.

I just got this email from Conans:

    From Our Family to Yours,

    THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

    THE SAD NEWS 😞

Some of you may have heard, that Conans Pizza Central, our original location opened on July 19th, 1976, is closing. I'm writing you with a heavy heart, to confirm it is true.

Our 42nd Anniversary weekend (July19th-22nd) will be our last days baking gourmet pies on the corner of 29th & Guadalupe. We've fed a generation a Longhorns, and will miss being so close to campus. And while we aren't ruling out a new Central location, we have no immediate plans.

We've been truly blessed to have a solid core group of loyal staff who have recommitted to making sure you're last Conans Central pizza experience is one to remember! Now recall, this is our smallest store and crew, so if you're planning something big, give us a heads up. And come during our slower off-peak hours to spread the love around.

    THE GREAT NEWS!!!

CONANS NORTH AND CONANS SOUTH WILL CONTINUE cooking up your favorite pizzas! AND, both locations will only get better in this new era, as two independent owner-operated restaurants, we're doubling-down on the future of Austin, Texas, Earth.

It probably has more to do with the lack of quality options downtown as compared to the rest of Austin (especially if you want a Texas/Austin vibe).  I guess Roaring Fork would tick all of the boxes for OP, but there are a lot of other places I would rather go in this city.

It would take an unusual definition to say that Ranch 616 isn't downtown.  Roaring Fork Stonelake has a great vibe on a nice evening.  Not a stretch to consider that an Arboretum area joint.  Lots of good choices.

Conan's is closing multiple locations.  With so much good pizza in Austin, hard to believe they hung on this long.  Then again, people will fucking miss Pizza Hut.

As best I can tell, only 29th Street location is closing.  They've cited rent increases.  Have you been around campus lately?  That whole area is going nuts (and vertical mixed use).

Savage deep pan on whole wheat is a national treasure.  Or, at least a local one.

Truth (with extra japs and anchovies).

  4. Right, you are, Big Up.  My answer is Herrera's Cafe on Sylvan.  They serve everything you can find at Enchiladas Y Mas plus some awesome caldo and menudo from time to time.

  5. Had some excellent fatty brisket and pork belly at Freedmen's yesterday.  Bartender's choice Old Fashioned's did not suck.  Summer is a really good time to go there while the young West Campus idoits are away.

  6. Kata Robata on Kirby is my current favorite.    Their happy hour is a great deal and very popular -- there is usually a line of folks waiting for them to open the door at 5 pm.

  7. "Words from Gus.    Gus fails to mention he probably would like to see the team take more pitches.  😊   (for you young guys,  Gus' teams were known to take pitches as Augie's were for bunting)"

This was really huge in the true double-elimination tournaments held back in the day.  You needed to make the opposition throw lots of pitches and you didn't need to offer until they showed that they knew how to throw a strike.

  8. Mi Cocina is pretty upscale on the Tex-Mex index.  Monkey Bar is usually lots of fun.  While I'm not a fan of this place for anything other than happy hour out on a balcony, if you really wanted to stay downtown, Iron Cactus might pass as an "upscale Tex-Mex" joint.  Drink heavily and all the food will be great!

  9. You can't go wrong with the original Al's.  I've never had a bad meal there, but I confess that I rarely get a steak.  I love the lamb chops and the veal osso bucco as far as entrees. Great apps and salads.  I've paired these entrees with boar chops, steak tartare, oysters rockefeller, and wedge salads in recent years.  Have a right proper martini.  Drink some wine.  Y'all will have a great evening.

Here is something I just noticed, during the 2017-2018 academic year, aggy failed to post a winning record in any of the 3 major sports.

Assume you are talking about their failure to post winning SEC! SEC! SEC! conference records.
